GRC pilot: Big data technology-enabled sustainable and social just cities

Alternative title: GRC-pilot: Bærekraftige og sosiale rettferdige byer med stor datateknologi

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

In 2020, over 50% of the world’s population are living in the urban area. By 2050, 7 out of 10 people in the world will live in cities. And the cities will generate more than 80% of the global GDP. Like some other megatrends, urbanization has the potential to become a positive transformative force for every aspect of sustainable development, including the reduction of inequality. Considering aging and new living styles (such as working from home and walkable cities), how to properly apply emerging technologies to improve urban living conditions is important. The aim of JustCity is to leverage the power of data and technology to promote sustainable development, social equity, and well-being within and among cities. In order to achieve the primary goal, we have several sub-goals. 1. Identify the social-spatial inequity of urban areas and propose performance well-being indicators. 2. Develop sustainable and inclusive services and urban planning strategies. 3. Explore the pathways to a sustainable, equal, and inclusive urban system. This project is based on four ongoing and recently finished projects funded by NFR (No. 299078), NSFC (No. 11975071), FORMAS (No. 2018-00255), and TUBITK (No. 120K273). This project is led by Oslo Metropolitan University together (Norway) with Abdullah Gül Üniversitesi (Turkey), the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Uppsala University (Sweden). Viken fylkeskommune, Syklistenes Landsfroening, Chengdu Institute of New Economic Development Limited Company are partners. This project is funded through the international call SDG Pilot Call, a collaboration between 11 funding agencies from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin-America. The aim of the call is to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs, through the implementation of results from ongoing or recently finalized research and innovation projects to advance knowledge-based achievement of the SDGs, from local to regional scale.
