FUNCHI – Evaluation of production scalability and market potential for new fungal chitosans

The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has developed a new process technology to produce fungal chitosan. Chitosan is a remarkable natural polymer with diverse capabilities and many use-cases. The vegan alternative raw material of chitosan are fungi. Initially we have identified agriculture, textile production and medical devices as the most promising markets for chitosan. Today, most chitosan is derived from shrimp wastes using chemical polluting technology and producing harmful effluents. This, in addition to the increase in the demand for the chitosan polymer is predicted to lead to a need for other sources of chitosan. This qualification project is based on the excellent research performed at NMBU and the input from industrial stakeholders who confirms that there is a market need for this technology. At the start of the project TRL level for the process technology is TRL3 and by the end of the project the achieved TRL will be TRL4. This project will aim to find a product-market fit (from BRL 1 to BRL 2), so the technology can be further developed in the best direction through a verification project.

Virkninger: Prosjektet har identifisert 3 mulige første markeder med høyt potensiale; kosmetikk, mat og medisinsk utstyr. I tillegg har prosjektet avdekket at produksjonsprosessen har potensiale til å produsere kitosan av svært høy kvalitet, noe som gjør at det vil være lettere å få innpass i markedet for høykvalitets kitosan. Prosjektet har også avdekket at teknologien er patenterbar, noe som er viktig for kommersialiseringen. Effekter: Prosjektet er fremdeles svært tidlig i en kommersiailseringsprosess, men er godt på vei til å kunne kommersialisere en prosess som vil kunne gi betydelig reduksjon i forurensing fra kitosan-produksjon.
