Co-creating AI: Tools and Methods for an Ethical and Democratic Local Press
Introduction
This collaborative project between iTromsø, OsloMet, and the University of Agder examines how the local media house iTromsø employs artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to achieve more precise, distinctive, and efficient news journalism. The project emphasises that this development should occur through close collaboration among journalists, editors, developers, and other staff, to ensure solutions are well adapted to the diverse needs within the organisation. A central focus is to deploy AI in ways that align with press-ethical guidelines and the specific conditions of local journalism. AI is intended to augment journalists’ work, not replace it, since journalists hold the essential professional competence required to run the newsroom.
Problem Statement
Contemporary society generates vast amounts of data and information in multiple formats, which constitute vital sources of insight into events and social developments. However, identifying appropriate, high-quality sources and analysing this material can be extremely resource intensive, particularly for smaller news organisations with limited capacity. As a result, important information may go undetected and unreported. Artificial intelligence holds substantial potential as a tool to support this work, but it must not be implemented or used uncritically. There are numerous examples of AI applications leading to severely negative consequences; consequently, all AI support must remain under clear human control,an issue that will be a central concern of this project.
Research Question
How does iTromsø co-create AI tools that strengthen the quality and efficiency of local journalism while safeguarding press-ethical considerations?
Research Design
The project adopts a qualitative research design, specifically design ethnography. This approach entails the researcher participating in and engaging with the organisation over an extended period, collecting data in the form of fieldnotes from observations, participation and collaboration, conversations, and various types of interviews. This is appropriate for developing a robust understanding of the cultural and context-specific setting into which AI solutions are to be introduced, assumed to be a key criterion for establishing the most suitable solutions. Ethnography is distinguished by its strong sensitivity to context, enabling rich and nuanced understandings, and is in many respects exploratory, given that the solutions and methods for AI tool development at iTromsø are ongoing and under active development. Principles of design ethnography include developing an understanding of, and empathy for, the needs, aspirations, and experiences of those working in the organisation under study, in order to inform the development of what is to be created.
Utviklingen innen kunstig intelligens (AI) og maskinlæring går raskt fremover og er spådd å ha vidtrekkende konsekvenser på tvers av ulike sektorer, inkludert journalistikk. I dagens samfunn er tilgangen til informasjon enorm, og en av journalistikkens hovedoppgaver er å samle informasjon om samfunnshendelser og formidle dette til publikum. Denne informasjonen må vurderes kritisk, og omhyggelig behandles for å unngå skjevhet og sikre nøyaktighet. Dette prosjektet har som mål å undersøke hvordan AI kan utnyttes av lokalavisen i Tromsø, i samarbeid med Universitetet i Agder (UIA), for å effektivt finne og formidle viktig informasjon fra ulike datakilder. Ved å gjøre det søker prosjektet å oppfylle journalistikkens samfunnsoppdrag mer effektivt. Mens journalister manuelt kan samle inn, behandle og analysere data, kan AI utføre disse oppgavene langt mer effektivt. Dette lar journalister fokusere på å lage historier fra dataene og legge til det menneskelige elementet som bringer dataene til live. Prosjektet tar sikte på å utforske dette samspillet mellom maskin og menneskelig innsats for å styrke journalistikken. I tillegg utforsker dette prosjektet hvordan AI kan bidra til en mer troverdig og sannhetssøkende presse, utvikler verktøy som letter arbeidsbelastningen til journalister, og produserer nyheter som informerer, involverer og engasjerer publikum. Lokalavisen iTromsø har tidligere satset på å utforske potensialet i datadrevet journalistikk, noe som har resultert i prisvinnende arbeid som har synliggjort sosiale og økonomiske forskjeller. Dette prosjektet har som mål å bygge videre på denne suksessen ved å utvikle AI-ekspertise og verktøy for å fortsette å avdekke og rapportere om viktige samfunnsspørsmål. Avslutningsvis vil dette samarbeidet mellom Tromsøs lokalavis og UIA bane vei for en ny æra av journalistikk som er mer effektiv, innsiktsfull og slagkraftig.
