Crack propagation is computationally demanding, and quantum computing may be a disruptive technology leading to better and faster solutions for this problem. This topic is relevant for applications in fields of modeling and simulating natural fragmentation of ammunition, characterizing and modeling brittle materials such as ceramics and concrete, as well as protecting military vehicles. Crack propagation under extreme loads and strain rates is a very random process directed by imperfections in materials and currently modeled by applying stress and strain fields and node splitting methods for determining the directions of cracks.
