SINTEF MiNaLab’s leadership in mass produceable, chip-based piezoelectric Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (piezoMEMS) elements that can move, tilt and bend upon electrical actuation have led to successful commercialization activities such as spin-off companies Tunable AS (IR-spectrometer for multi-gas analysis) and Sonair AS (ultrasound transducer for imaging in air), commercialization projects such as VERIFISERING In-Charge (wireless charging) and QUALIFICATION QBeam (low power speaker elements), as well as innovation projects such as IPN Optotox (gas spectrometer), Pilot-T MiniSalt (spectrometer for ice-detection on roads). These commercialisations only capitalize on a narrow subset of the functionalities that are results from the research and development of piezoMEMS technology platform, while multiple applications remain in strongly growing markets such IoT 6G communications, augmented and mixed reality (AR and MR), and wireless charging, to name a few.
The commercialization challenge: There is simply not enough funding, skilled labour or time to individually commercialize our MEMS technology towards all potential applications if we use the typical approach of spinning out one company per application area. The time aspect is critical since several international players are positioning themselves to several of the identified use-cases, while the lack of innovation funds limits our ability pursue the goals of this project internally. Opportunities: We believe, however, that commercialization can be achieved at a faster pace through providing access to our technology through licensing.
Expected outcomes of the project: This project will assess the market interest for licensing SINTEFs MEMS micromirror platform and the conditions under which such a model is attractive for potential end users in the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and MEMS foundry industries. Such dialogue will also refine our identified use-cases for the technology platform.
