The microbiome has an influence on health in all host organisms. Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract with health promoting microbiota may be a promising method to promote health and welfare in farmed Atlantic salmon. In this project, we aim to show how two specific lactic acid bacteria (LAB)? Lactiplantibacillus plantarum R2 Biocenol TM (CCM 8674) and Limosilactobacillus fermentum R3 Biocenol TM (CCM 8675) - can improve health, welfare and survival of farmed Atlantic salmon. To demonstrate this, we will offer LAB-coated feeds to salmon, starting from early feeding stages and continuing through smoltification and their growth at sea. Throughout the project, we will carefully monitor fish growth, health and welfare, as well as the quality of the final fillet. Growth will be measured using traditional indicators, while health will be assessed by looking at immune function, the strength of mucosal barriers and the resistance of the fish to common challenges like sea lice infestation and winter wounds. Operational welfare indicators will also be studied in this project. Altogether, these assessments will form the basis for developing and labelling a new health product for Atlantic salmon?which will be launched commercially after the project is completed.
