SCARES: Space Crisis Accident Response and Emergency Services

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

Space accidents, ranging from catastrophic collisions to malfunctions of satellites, can have far-reaching consequences for Earth, particularly affecting Europe’s critical infrastructure, human health, the environment, and even economic stability. These accidents also pose emerging risks in sectors like communication, defense, and climate observation. The project aims to develop a comprehensive framework for crisis response and recovery after a large-scale space accident, with a specific focus on enhancing European resilience. RISE Fire Research will be the project coordinator to ensure the completion of planned activities according to the timing and financial commitments of the work plan. In addition to the project management role, RISE Fire Research will lead a WP focusing on the vulnerability of emergency services, including fire and crisis response systems, that rely on satellite-based communication and coordination tools. RISE Fire Research is an approved research institute in Norway but does not receive public basis funding, mainly due to our size. This means that we have less support for costs related to research applications compared to larger research institutes in Norway. We have been involved in multiple successful EU applications and have shown the ability to deliver high-quality research on those projects. The PES funding will partially support the costs related to the final stages of preparing the proposal.
