The aim of this project (within the scope of the seedfunding) is to create a consortium of stakeholders with extensive expertise and experience in surgical training in order to implement an innovative surgical educational model in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia. We will build on our accumulated track-record in surgical training, clinical practice, healthcare technology, and educational research to share best-practice standards across high-, low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs). During the project's preparatory phase, we will pilot a standardised training model using the Lichtenstein procedure, recognised as the gold-standard technique for open inguinal hernia repair. The long-term goal, to be further expanded in the main project, is to implement and assess if this novel educational model can be scaled across different healthcare systems and deliver consistent, high-quality surgical training in resource-constrained settings. By incorporating innovative digital tools, national specialist training programs, hospitals, international and local surgical educators we aim to deliver high quality and standardised surgical training, facilitating domestic LLMIC development of an efficient and fit-for purpose surgical workforce.
