Forskere har lenge debattert om spesifikke endringer i måten genene våre reguleres på, kalt epigenetiske endringer eller "epimutasjoner," kan øke risikoen for kreft. Våre nylige banebrytende undersøkelser har gitt sterke bevis på at epimutasjoner faktisk er en risikofaktor for visse typer kreft.
I en studie av en stor gruppe kvinner fant vi at de som hadde epimutasjoner i BRCA1-genet, hadde mye større risiko for å utvikle trippel-negativ brystkreft og høygradig serøs eggstokkreft senere i livet. Disse epimutasjonene ser ut til å oppstå tidlig under fosterutviklingen, og fører til at det fødte barnet (og senere det voksne individet) har en mosaikk av celler i kroppen, der noen få celler bærer epimutasjonen.
Nå har vi som mål å utvide disse studiene til andre gener og andre former for kreft. For å gjøre dette vil vi analysere blodprøver fra en studie som har rekruttert over 160 000 kvinner i USA.
Hvis denne forskningen lykkes, kan den revolusjonere vår forståelse av hvordan kreft utvikler seg og føre til bedre forebyggende tiltak. Det kan også ha store implikasjoner for kreftscreeningprogrammer og genetisk veiledning for personer med høy risiko for visse typer kreft.
Alt i alt fremhever vår forskning den viktige rollen som epigenetiske endringer kan spille i kreftutvikling og understreker behovet for ytterligere undersøkelser på dette området.

Cancers result from accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations. The minority of cancers are due to inherited (germline) alterations that affect all cells in the body. On the other hand, the majority of cancers (>85%; sporadic cancers) are believed to occur due to localised alterations that accumulate after birth as a result of stochastic processes and/or environmental effects. Recently, in a major breakthrough work, we have provided definitive evidence that some sporadic cancers arise in adult life due to mosaic BRCA1 epimutations that occurred during the early embryonic development. BRCA1 epimutations have a surprisingly high population frequency (>5% of adult women) and hazard ratios for breast and ovarian cancer (2.4 and 1.9, respectively). Together with the findings of epimutations in other tumour suppressor genes (MGMT, MLH1, etc) this has led us to hypothesise that a substantial fraction of other sporadic cancers can be attributed to prenatal epimutations in other tumour suppressor genes.

In this project, we will use ultradeep targeted methylation sequencing for quantitative and qualitative analyses of epimutations. Evaluation of cancer risk related to epimutations will be done by studying samples from prospective biobanks (WHI) with samples from healthy women that remained cancer-free or developed different types of incident cancers years/decades after samples were taken. We will also characterise epimutations present in samples of newborn boys and girls, as well as their parents (MoBa biobank). Finally, using cryopreserved blood-derived stem-like cells from young healthy males and female breast cancer patients (in-house biobank), we will assess mutational and epimutational mosaicism at the single-cell level, generating clonal phylogeny for the methylated cells and thus providing insights on early-developmental processes that create epimutations.

Mosaic epimutations: population prevalence, mechanistic origins, and their role in cancer

Kunstig lys om natten (ALAN) setter naturen ut av balanse. Mange dyr er avhengige av lengden på dagslyset (fotoperioden) som signal for å synkronisere reproduksjon med gunstige forhold. Forstyrrelser i dette naturlige signalet, enten gjennom lysforurensning fra urban belysning eller akvakultur, kan ha alvorlige konsekvenser for dyrs livssyklus og overlevelse. Prosjektet mitt tar sikte på å avdekke de biologiske mekanismene bak sesongmessig reproduksjon for bedre å forutsi og redusere disse påvirkningene. Jeg vil undersøke et nøkkelhormon, thyroidstimulerende hormon (TSH), og dets funksjon i reguleringen av sesongmessig reproduksjon hos dyr ved å bruke medaka (japansk risfisk) som modell.
Denne lille fisken er perfekt for genetiske studier, da det allerede finnes mange verktøy og protokoller for denne arten for å studere i detalj de cellulære og molekylære mekanismene som er involvert i essensielle kroppsfunksjoner, som for eksempel reproduksjon. For å undersøke dette vil jeg bruke avanserte genetiske verktøy og optogenetikk, en metode som bruker lys til å kontrollere celleaktivitet, for å avdekke mekanismen som regulerer det sesongmessige tidspunktet for reproduksjon. Ved å dekode hvordan dyr tilpasser sin sesongmessige reproduksjon til forstyrrelser i lyssignaler, vil dette prosjektet belyse hvordan vi kan ivareta biologisk mangfold og utvikle bærekraftig akvakulturpraksis.

Seasonal reproduction in vertebrates ensures offspring survival by aligning reproductive timing with photoperiod as the primary cue. However, artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts these cues, posing a threat to species survival. Similarly, continuous light used in aquaculture to inhibit fish reproduction may have unintended physiological effects. OptoSeason seeks to decode the mechanisms underlying seasonal reproduction as a critical step toward predicting and mitigating the impact of these environmental disturbances.
Research in mammals and birds suggests that thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the pituitary pars tuberalis (PT-TSH) regulates seasonal reproduction. However, the role of PT-TSH remains controversial due to the challenges of knocking out the Tshb gene without affecting essential thyroid functions. Thanks to the teleost-specific whole-genome duplication (WGD), we can now study a TSH gene specifically involved in seasonal reproduction using teleost fish models. Our previous findings indicate that tshbb plays a crucial role in this process.
To unravel these mechanisms, OptoSeason will develop a next-gen optogenetic tool in Japanese medaka, a seasonally breeding teleost suitable for genetic manipulation and knockout studies. Considering its potential, this tool also has broader applications across various biological research areas. We will also employ advanced techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout/knock-in, receptor assays, laser microdissection, transcriptomics, calcium imaging, and patch clamping to explore the tshbb pathway and its link to reproduction.
Understanding this pathway will help identify markers for out-of-season spawning risks due to ALAN and provide insights into environmental and genetic influences on reproduction. This research will address challenges like early puberty in aquaculture, advance scientific knowledge, and develop tools to tackle key environmental and industrial issues.

OptoSeason: decoding seasonal reproduction in vertebrates using a next-gen optogenetic tool

Mennesker påvirker marine økosystemer på mange måter, som gjennom klimaendringer, forurensning og overfiske. Kumulative effekter refererer til de samlede effektene av slike stressfaktorer. Disse utgjør en av de største truslene mot økosystemer og biologisk mangfold. Likevel vet vi lite om hvordan stressfaktorer virker sammen i komplekse økosystemer. Dette gjør det utfordrende å forvalte våre kyst- og havområder bærekraftig.

CLIMAX-prosjektet har som mål å bedre forstå kumulative påvirkninger gjennom datasimuleringer. Det introduserer innovative modellerings- og dataanalysemetoder som kombinerer dagens datakraft med kunnskapen som økologer har bygget i flere tiår gjennom felt- og laboratoriestudier.

CLIMAX vil vise potensialet til disse nye metodene med en casestudie: menneskelige påvirkninger i Skagerrak og Kattegat. Her tar prosjektet for seg to sentrale miljøspørsmål. For det første vet vi allerede mye om de enkelte stressfaktorenes effekter på individuelle arter – men hvordan samhandler disse stressorene ved å skape økosystemendringer som redusert biologisk mangfold og produktivitet? For det andre, hvordan påvirker langvarig stress økosystemets evne til å motstå og komme seg etter ekstreme hendelser som marine hetebølger?

Marine økosystemer er bemerkelsesverdig stabile, men kumulative påvirkninger kan overvelde deres evne til å motstå og komme seg etter forstyrrelser. Derfor kan CLIMAX sine resultater forbedre bærekraftig bruk og vern av marine økosystemer i Norge og andre steder.

Cumulative impacts refer to the combined effects of multiple stressors on an ecosystem, e.g., climate change, pollution, and fishing. They are one of the biggest threats to ecosystems and biodiversity, but understanding them better remains a grand challenge in marine ecology. Modeling is a crucial component of tackling this challenge. However, current modeling approaches contradict empirical studies, suffer from data limitations, or ignore the statistical possibilities arising when ecosystem simulations are run many times. New modeling and analysis approaches are therefore needed. CLIMAX aims to 1) make a leap in the modeling of cumulative impacts and 2) exploit this methodological progress to understand how cumulative impacts emerge at the ecosystem scale.

CLIMAX’s scientific potential comes from a novel combination of leading-edge computational methods and a strong foundation in the empirical literature. This integration of methods is based on three ideas. First, ecosystem models (here, Ecospace) can simulate how stressor effects identified in empirical studies might ripple through the food web. Second, ecosystem models can generate big data about the simulated ecosystem in computational experiments (running the model many times with changing inputs). Third, such big data allow for unprecedented statistical analyses of how ecosystem-scale changes might emerge in the model system. CLIMAX will develop these methods, make them available in free software, and show their scientific potential by addressing two critical research questions: 1) How might stressor interactions at the ecosystem scale emerge from known effects on individual species? 2) How do chronic stressors affect ecological resilience to short-term, extreme disturbances like marine heatwaves?

By combining the best computational methods and harnessing the unprecedented computing power available today, CLIMAX has the potential to set an ambitious agenda for modeling cumulative impacts for decades to come.

Understanding cumulative human impacts in a marine ecosystem with computational experiments

Over hele Europa er det tydelig at dagens jordbrukspraksis ikke lenger er bærekraftig, og at jordbrukssystemene må endres for å opprettholde matproduksjonen og samtidig ivareta det biologiske mangfoldet, økosystemene og de mange fordelene de gir samfunnet.

En løsning på dette er agroøkologi. Agroøkologisk jordbruk har til felles å utnytte naturlige økologiske prosesser for å gjøre jordbruk mer bærekraftig. Dessverre, til tross for mye forskning på agroøkologisk jordbrukspraksis, er bruken av dette svært begrenset i Europa.

I SAFER-prosjektet vil et stort team av europeiske forskere jobbe på tvers av et nettverk med seks 'levende laboratorier', det vil si at gårder i drift på tvers av Europa vil iverksette agroøkologisk praksis. Ved samarbeid på de involverte gårdene, vil bønder, forskere og andre interessenter sammen bidra til økt kunnskap om agroøkologi. Det vil gi mer kunnskap om de landbruksmessige, miljømessige og sosialøkologiske fordelene, samt de mulige avveiningene mellom ulike fordeler.  

Teamet fra Universitetet i Bergen, ledet av prof. Peter Manning, vil være en viktig bidragsyter i prosjektet. De skal oppskalere data fra prosjektet på felt- og gårdsnivå til hele landskap, og simulere endringer i gårdspraksis ved å bruke en kombinasjon av samfunnsvitenskap, fjernmåling og matematisk modellering. Dette vil gi prognoser for hvordan konsekvenser av landsbruksstrategier på landskapsnivå påvirker hele systemet, fra bønder til lokale interessenter. 

Sluttproduktet vil være detaljert kunnskap om hvordan ulike økologiske praksiser påvirker bønder, bygdesamfunn og om hvilke strategier som øker bærekraftig produksjon og flerfunksjonalitet i europeiske jordbrukslandskap. Ved aktiv involvering av bønder og andre interessenter gjennom hele forskningsprosessen, tar vi også sikte på å øke relevansen og bruken av de identifiserte løsningene.

Agroecology offers an opportunity to reconcile agricultural production with human well-being across Europe. However, despite significant evidence that agroecological farming reduces the environmental footprint of agriculture, agroecology is struggling to expand across Europe. This limited adoption emerges from a limited understanding of the cross-disciplinary impacts (agronomic, ecological, economic and social dimensions) of upscaling agroecological farming and recent social unrest following the deployment of agroecological policies indicates that there is an urgent need to address this issue. In addition, a major challenge for agroecology is that no single agroecological practice is suitable for all contexts. Instead, practices need to be targeted and adapted to local socio-ecological contexts, with a strong involvement of stakeholders. Addressing such challenge implies a paradigm shift towards co-design in research and innovation in agroecology.

SAFER will address these challenges by mobilizing a European network of 6 Living Labs distributed across contrasting regions and social-ecological systems, in a multidisciplinary approach. We will: (i) co-design best suited agroecological practices adapted to local social-ecological conditions via a participatory approach that actively involves stakeholders; (ii) quantify the multiple agronomical, environmental and socio-economic benefits and risks of scaling up these agroecological practices from the field to the landscape scale using a similar landscape-scale design across Living Labs; (iii) forecast the whole-system consequences of landscape-scale strategies for farmers and local stakeholders; (iv) identify how local policies, stakeholder demands and the Living Lab methodology can enhance or limit the expansion of agroecological practices

Work at UiB will concentrate on modelling work in (ii) and (iii) but will contribute to all aspects.

AGROECOL 1 SAFER Strengthening Agricultural landscape multiFunctionality through expansion of agroecological farming in EuRope (SAFER)

Et primtall er et positivt heltall som bare er delelig med 1 og seg selv: de første fem primtallene er 2, 3, 5, 7 og 11. Primtall er byggesteinene vi trenger for å lage de andre heltallene ved hjelp av multiplikasjon. Akkurat som et vannmolekyl består av to hydrogen-atomer og et oksygen-atom, består tallet 12 av to 2-tall og et 3-tall, siden 12 = 2 x 2 x 3. Euklid viste allerede i antikken at det finnes uendelig mange primtall, men vi har i dag bare en primitiv forståelse av primtallenes distribusjon blant heltallene. Dette spørsmålet omhandler samspillet mellom de additive og multiplikative egenskapene til heltallene.

I dette prosjektet skal vi studere primtallene fra to forskjellige perspektiver. I det første perspektivet assosierer et signal med en gitt frekvens til hvert primtall, hvor frekvensen avhenger av størrelsen på primtallet. Til forskjell fra de klassiske periodiske funksjonene vi kjenner til fra fysiske systemer, får vi ved å kombinere primtallsfrekvensene funksjoner som er nesten periodiske. Det andre perspektivet går ut på å assosiere hvert primtall til en uavhengig variabel, som gir oss funksjoner av uendelig mange variable. De to perspektivene er på mange måter ekvivalente, og det er gjennom denne ekvivalensen vi håper å oppnå en bedre forståelse av primtallene og deres egenskaper.

Multiplicative analysis is an emergent field of analysis that lies in the intersection of complex analysis, operator theory, and analytic number theory. The main objective of the research project is to solve problems reinforcing the interplay between these different branches of analysis. Of particular interest are interactions between multiplicative analysis and the Riemann zeta function. The central objects in the field are the Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series, and our main objective is to study analogues of classical results and structures for these objects. 

In the Hilbertian setting, we aim at breaking out of the current crop of local results to improve our understanding of global Carleson measures and the global structure of zero sets. Our approach to these problems is based on the theory of almost periodic functions and certain properties of the Riemann zeta function. 

In the non-Hilbertian setting, our selection of problems revolves around the local embedding problem. The focus is on dual spaces, interpolating sequences, and embeddings (both contractive and non-contractive) between function spaces. We will use interdisciplinary techniques ranging from infinite-dimensional harmonic analysis, via function theory of one and several variables, to analytic number theory and multiplicative chaos.

The 4-year project will support 6,33 man-years of research carried out by the project manager and one PhD student. A significant part of the project is the long-term hybrid "Multiplicative analysis seminar" that will attract researchers from analytic number theory and operator-related function theory to interdisciplinary research in multiplicative analysis.

Multiplicative Analysis

I dette prosjektet ønsker vi å avdekke de skjulte hemmelighetene ved tordenstormer ved å studere mystiske, flimrende utbrudd av høyenergi-stråling—det vi kaller flimrende gammaglimt. Disse glimtene er ekstremt korte (de varer bare i noen titalls millisekunder) men avslører overraskende energetiske prosesser som foregår inne i selve stormskyene. Vi tror at disse flimrende gammaglimtene, sammen med beslektede fenomener kjent som gammastråleglød utbrudd og gammastråleglød, produseres av en fascinerende prosess kalt "relativistisk tilbakekoblingsutladning". Enkelt sagt,når en storm bygger opp energi, kan det utløse en selvopprettholdt kaskade av høyenergipartikler som gir opphav til disse glimtene og til slutt får det elektriske feltet til å kollapse, uten å kreve konvensjonell lynutladning. For å løse denne gåten vil vi kombinere observasjoner fra fly, satellitter og værballonger med avanserte databeregninger. Denne tilnærmingen vil gjøre det mulig for oss å utforske hvordan disse energetiske hendelsene utvikler seg og samhandler i tordenstormer. I tillegg kan vår forskning resultere i innovative måter å fjernmåle elektrisk aktivitet i stormer på og gi ny innsikt i prosesser som påvirker atmosfærisk kjemi—som igjen kan påvirke klimamodeller. Ettersom disse kraftige gammastrålene kan utløse fotonukleære reaksjoner og generere isotoper som Karbon-14, kan våre funn også ha viktige implikasjoner for radiokarbondatering i områder med høy tordenstormaktivitet.

This research proposal, "What makes 'Flickering Gamma-ray Flashes' Flicker?", investigates a newly discovered high-energy phenomenon in thunderstorms. The project aims to understand the mechanisms behind Flickering Gamma-ray Flashes (FGFs) and their relationship to other thunderstorm phenomena like Gamma-Ray Glows and Glow Bursts.
The research will develop advanced computer models and analyze data from multiple observation platforms to explore the role of relativistic feedback mechanisms and the importance of these processes in thunderstorm dynamics. Structured into five work packages over four years, the project involves international collaboration and aims to produce new insights, high-impact publications, and open-source models for the scientific community.
Beyond advancing high-energy atmospheric physics, the project may have broader implications for understanding atmospheric electricity, climate science, and radiocarbon dating. This research builds on recent discoveries from the ALOFT Campaign in July 2023 and seeks to significantly contribute to our understanding of thunderstorms and their effects.

This research proposal will also be complementary to two ongoing projects at the UiB HRT group, both recipients of a NFR grant: project number 325582 led by M. Marisaldi, and 335162 led by N. Lehtinen.

What makes “Flickering Gamma-ray Flashes” Flicker ?

MORALCHANGE-prosjektet undersøker hvordan endringer i moralske verdier har formet politiske og kulturelle skillelinjer i Skandinavia de siste 50 årene. Prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i den amerikanske sosialpsykologen Jonathan Haidts studier av moralske verdier. I følge Haidt samler de grunnleggende verdiene seg langs to moralske dimensjoner: universalisme, som vektlegger likhet og global omsorg, og partikularisme, som prioriterer lojalitet til spesifikke fellesskap. Vi hevder at spenningen mellom disse moralske grunnverdiene – og hvordan de har blitt kommunisert av politiske eliter og media – har bidratt til sosialdemokraters tap av terreng, framvekst av populistiske bevegelser og polarisering rundt temaer som innvandring og identitetspolitikk.

Vi spør: Hvordan har moralske verdier uttrykt av politiske eliter og media endret seg over tid? Hvordan henger velgernes moralske verdier sammen med deres politiske preferanser? Og hvordan påvirker moralske verdier polarisering rundt innvandring og identitetspolitikk?

Vår hypotese er at sosialdemokrater og tradisjonelle medier i økende grad har vektlagt universalistiske verdier, noe som har skapt en moralsk avstand til en stor del av velgerne. Denne avstanden har skapt rom for populistiske utfordrere og fremvekst av alternative medier med partikularistisk orientering.

For å undersøke dette, skal vårt flerfaglige forskerteam analysere tiår med stortingstaler, partiprogrammer og mediedekning fra Norge, Sverige og Danmark. Gjennom spørreundersøkelser og eksperimenter undersøker vi også hvordan moralske verdier påvirker holdninger og atferd.

Ved å studere hvordan moralske verdier henger sammen med nye politiske skillelinjer, søker vi å gi en dypere forståelse av hva som driver politisk endring og kulturell turbulens i vår tids demokratier.

MORALCHANGE investigates the role of moral values in driving political reconfiguration in Western democracies. We focus on three interrelated trends: declining social democratic parties, rising populist and anti-establishment movements, and polarization around contested issues such as immigration and identity politics. Our core proposition is that the changing relationship between the institutional supply and popular demand of moral values is key to understanding these developments.

Our project relies on a strongly interdisciplinary setup. We draw on theory from moral psychology and employ machine-learning and computational text analytics alongside qualitative and historically informed text analysis and survey-based research.

Our overarching theoretical approach draws on Moral Foundations Theory (MFT), which provides a rich framework to understand and empirically analyze political and cultural conflict in a contemporary-historical context. The theory posits that morality is a universal human yet culturally variable phenomenon that varies along six foundational values: care, equality, proportionality, loyalty, authority, and sanctity. Research on MFT has found that endorsement of these values, or different configurations of them, varies across the political spectrum.

We apply these insights to examine the role of moral values in driving political reconfiguration, focusing on Scandinavia in the period 1975--2025. Specifically, we will study:

(1) the supply side, by analyzing the moral values of political appeals (by social democrats and their national populist challengers) and of news coverage of the immigration issue over a period of 50 years;

(2) the demand side, by tracing the relationship between moral values and political orientation over several decades; and

(3) the impact of moral values on disagreements and polarization around identity politics (the struggle for recognition and rights of historically marginalized communities) in present-day Scandinavia

Alternative protein kan erstatte kjøt. Gitt at kjøttintensive dietar har betydelege helsemessige, miljømessige, klimatiske og dyrevelferdsmessige konsekvensar, skaper denne tanken mykje optimisme og betydelege investeringar. Enten det handlar om insekt, plantar, labframstilt kjøt eller andre ingrediensar, kjem alternative protein med høge forventningar. Men mykje har vorte teke for gitt innan dette feltet: berre fordi noko kan etast, betyr ikkje at det blir godteke som ønskjeleg og kulturelt passande mat. Så sjølv om alternative protein kan erstatte kjøt, er det framleis uklart korleis og i kva grad denne erstatninga faktisk vil finne stad. Forståinga av korleis denne prosessen skjer (eller ikkje skjer) er av avgjerande betyding for å oppnå dei kosthaldsmessige endringane som er naudsynte for global matvaresystemkraft.

Tidlegare forsking på alternative protein viser at det for mange kan vere utfordrande å erstatte kjøt i kosthaldet, og at det finst betydeleg skepsis blant forbrukarane mot erstatningsprodukt. Vi veit at denne skepsisen er forma av fleire faktorar, som smak og helseomsyn, faste matvanar og generell frykt for nye mattypar. Men vi veit ikkje heilt korleis og kvifor ting vert akseptert som etande, ønskjeleg mat eller ikkje. Vi veit heller ikkje heilt korleis vi skal studere dette. For å fylle dette viktige kunnskapsgapet, set prosjektet REPLACE seg føre å svare på eit tilsynelatande enkelt spørsmål: korleis vert mat til mat? For å gjere dette, utviklar prosjektet ein ny teoretisk og metodologisk tilnærming og utforskar kjøtt-erstatning i Aust-Asia, ein lite studert nøkkelregion i forsking på alternative protein. Ved å fokusere på eit utval av kjøtt-erstattarar som plantebaserte kjøtetterlikningar, insekt og laboratorieframstilt kjøt, zoomer prosjektet inn på to sentrale, men svært ulike land i Søraust-Asia, som representerer eit hovudinnovasjonssenter og viktig marknad (Singapore) og ein nykommar i industrien og framveksande marknad (Vietnam).

Alternative proteins can replace meat. Given that meat-intensive diets have significant health, environmental, climate and animal welfare impacts, this idea is generating hype, optimism and substantial investment. Whether involving insects, plants, lab-grown meat or other ingredients, alternative proteins come with high expectations. However, it has become increasingly evident that much has been taken for granted in this field: just because something can be eaten, this does not mean that it will qualify as desirable and culturally appropriate food. Hence, while alternative proteins can replace meat, it is still unclear how and to what extent this replacement will in fact take place. Understanding how this does (not) happen is of crucial importance to achieving the dietary changes required for global food system sustainability.

Extensive research on alternative protein consumption shows that replacing meat is challenging and that there is considerable scepticism among consumers towards replacement products. We know this scepticism is shaped by a range of factors, such as taste and health concerns, the habitual nature of food practices, and a general fear of new food types. But we do not know how and why things become accepted as edible, desirable food or not. We do not even know quite how to study this. Such knowledge is necessary and urgent. To address this knowledge gap, REPLACE sets out to answer a deceptively simple question: how does food become food? To do so, it develops a new theoretical and methodological approach and empirically explores meat replacement in Eastern Asia, a key but understudied region in the ‘protein transition’. Focusing on a range of meat replacers, such as plant-based meat analogues, insects and lab-grown meat, the project zooms in on two key but highly different case countries in Southeast Asia representing a main innovation hub and important market (Singapore) and a late industry entry and emerging market (Vietnam).

Meat replacement and systems of edibility in Asia and beyond

CAPIDEMIC utforsker de politiske dimensjonene ved transnasjonale forsyningskjeder og hvordan disse svarer på bærekraftutfordringene som oppstår ved nye smittsomme sykdommer (EID). Forskningen vår retter søkelys mot fjørfeindustrien, som nå er truet av den globale spredningen av høypatogen fugleinfluensa (HPAI) – en krise med betydelige økonomiske og politiske implikasjoner. Vi undersøker hvordan ulike interessenter, inkludert regjeringer, internasjonale organisasjoner, selskaper og bønder navigerer i den sammensatte EID-håndteringen i fjørfeindustrien. Empirien i forskningen vår hentes fra India, som har en av verdens raskest voksende fjørfeindustrier. Landet står nå samtidig overfor en alvorlig trussel fra den globale spredningen av HPAI. Ved å bruke kvalitative metoder og omfattende feltarbeid fra industrikontorer til produksjonsanlegg i India, vil vi systematisk analysere de politiske, økonomiske og sosiale sidene av de globalt integrerte jordbrukssystemene. Vårt tverrfaglige team ledes av en dyktig forsker med ekspertise innen agrarstudier og økonomisk geografi og inkluderer videre etablerte og unge forskere med sterk interesse for de politiske sidene ved jordbruksendring og global helse. Funnene våre vil kunne bidra betydelig til akademiske debatter om den politiske rollen naturressursnæringer har i møtet med bærekraftkriser i det 21. århundre.

CAPIDEMIC is an innovative interdisciplinary project aimed at advancing research in the fields of agrarian studies, political economy, and economic geography, focusing on the political dimensions of transnational supply chains and their response to the sustainability challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases (EIDs). Our research centers on the poultry industry, currently under threat from the global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, a sustainability crisis with significant economic and political implications, given its potential for pandemic spread. The project aims to understand the complex interplay between political structures, governance mechanisms, and economic interests in shaping responses to EIDs within the poultry supply chain. We aim to introduce a fresh perspective on "supply chain capitalism" by moving beyond abstract conceptualizations, delving into political-economic dynamics of how different actors, including governments, firms, and farmers, navigate the complex terrain of EID management. The research primarily focuses on India's poultry industry, which is experiencing rapid growth but has been overlooked in discussions on supply chain capitalism and EIDs. Responses of biotech firms supplying genetic material to India's poultry industry will also be analyzed to highlight the political and economic implications of their strategies. Through qualitative methods and extensive fieldwork, CAPIDEMIC will analyze the political, economic, and social dimensions of transnationally integrated agricultural production systems. Led by a skilled researcher with expertise in agrarian studies and economic geography, our interdisciplinary team includes experienced scholars and early-career researchers with an interest in political dimensions of agrarian change and global health governance. Our findings will contribute significantly to academic debates on the politics of natural resource industries and sustainability crises in the 21st century.

A New Approach to Supply Chain Capitalism and Emerging Infectious Diseases

Hvilke prinsipper bør ligge til grunn for fordeling av humanitær bistand? Gapet mellom de humanitære behovene og finansieringen tilgjengelig for å dekke disse behovene vokser. I henhold til de humanitære prinsippene skal utvelgelsen av mottakere baseres på behov alene, men dette gir ikke gir tilstrekkelig veiledning når humanitære organisasjoner må velge hvem de skal prioritere å hjelpe. Dette prosjektet gjennomfører en etisk undersøkelse av hvilke prinsipper vi bør bruke for å fordele humanitær midler i lys av denne ressursknappheten.

Prosjektet er organisert rundt tre hovedtemaer. 

For det første: Hvordan bør humanitære organisasjoner prioritere mellom grupper med like store behov når én gruppe er dyrere å hjelpe enn den andre? Hvilken rolle bør kostnadseffektivitet spille i dette valget, og bør det avveies mot andre prinsipper, som for eksempel fordelingsrettferdighet? 

For det andre: Hvordan bør humanitære organisasjoner reagere på krigførende parters forsøk på stoppe eller vri fordelingen av humanitær bistand for eksempel gjennom blokade eller beskatning? Bør humanitære organisasjoner prioritere innsatser til slike områder over innsatser som kunne hjulpet flere mennesker andre steder?

For det tredje: Humanitær bistand kan ha både negative og positive indirekte konsekvenser, for eksempel på miljøet eller på den politiske spenningen i en konflikt. I hvilken grad bør slike konsekvenser vektlegges når humanitær bistand fordeles? 

Prosjektet vil utforske disse spørsmålene og utvikle empirisk informerte etiske argumenter for hvordan de bør håndteres. Partnerinstitusjonen for prosjektet er Department of Philosophy ved American University of Beirut. Forskingsspørsmålene er av generell relevans for fordelingen av humanitær bistand, men prosjektet vil ha et spesielt fokus på Syria og Libanon. Resultater fra prosjektet vil bli publisert i akademiske tidsskrifter og formidlet gjennom seminarer og konferanser med både akademikere og humanitære hjelpearbeidere.

The vast majority of people in need of humanitarian aid reside in regions affected by violence and conflict. At the same time, there is not sufficient funding to address everyone in need. This gives rise to the morally difficult and pressing question: By which criteria should aid be distributed in these regions? 

According to the humanitarian principles, the selection of beneficiaries must be carried out on the basis of need alone, giving priority to the most urgent cases of distress. This project demonstrates that this principle is not without problems. Firstly, the principle does not provide guidance as to how aid should be distributed among potential recipients whose needs are universally high and who cannot all be helped. Secondly, the principle does not specify what role considerations of cost-effectiveness should play in the distribution of limited resources. Thirdly, the principle does not take indirect effects of humanitarian aid on conflict into account. 

These difficult and important problems with the needs-based principle for selecting recipients for humanitarian aid have received insufficient scholarly attention. The project will systematically explore these questions and develop empirically informed ethical arguments for how they should be solved. The project’s outcome will both advance scholarly research and inform humanitarian practice.

While the questions addressed in the project are of general relevance to the distribution of humanitarian aid in fragile states, the project will have a particular focus on Syria and Lebanon. Findings from the project will be published in academic journals, and disseminated in policy briefs, seminars and through various outreach activities including training sessions for practitioners working in the humanitarian sector.

Kina bidrar betydelig til globale miljøproblemer og er derfor helt sentral i arbeidet med å løse dem. Kinas politikk og handlinger har dermed viktige implikasjoner for global miljøstyring. Landet har blitt en stadig viktigere aktør i internasjonale relasjoner generelt. Gitt Kinas innenrikspolitikk og rolle i internasjonal miljøpolitikk det siste tiåret, er vårt overordnede forskningsspørsmål:

Hvordan kan vi forklare Kinas rolle i internasjonalt miljøsamarbeid om klimaendringer, tap av biologisk mangfold og forurensning/kjemikalier? Vi deler dette spørsmålet inn i to forskningsemner: 1) Hvordan passer ulike typer globale styringsroller til å beskrive Kinas adferd i global miljøstyring? Vi skiller mellom leder, etternøler, brobygger og tilskuer-rollen, i tillegg til maktbruk og utvikler et sett med indikatorer for å skjelne mellom disse rollene. 2) Hva er de viktigste nasjonale og internasjonale driverne for endringer i Kinas roller og ambisjoner i global miljøstyring?

For å forstå disse spørsmålene undersøker vi endringer i Kinas politikk og handlinger over tid og sammenligner på tvers av de tre problemområdene. Globalt miljøsamarbeid er en egnet arena for å utøve lederskap fordi miljø generelt blir sett på som en 'lavpolitisk' arena, sammenlignet med 'høypolitikken' knyttet til utenrikspolitikk, sikkerhet og handel. 
For å komme i gang, hadde partnere et oppstartseminar i oktober 2023, og første workshop august 2024 ble avholdt på FNI, med alle partnere fra Kina og Norge til stede. Foreløpige resultater er et rammeverk med indikatorer for å kunne sammenligne på tvers av forskningsområdene. Prosjektdeltakerne kommer fra forskjellige disipliner og det var derfor viktig å utvikle et felles rammeverk. Arbeid med fagfellevurderte artikler er godt i gang, bl.a. biologisk mangfold. Prosjektdeltakerne har deltatt på/i: klimatoppmøtet (COP28) Dubai; forhandlinger for plastavtalen Nairobi; feltarbeid i Kina og Nairobi; delegasjon med klima- og miljøminister på offisielt besøk til Kina; intervjuet norske aktører om Kinas rolle i globale miljøforhandlinger. Utadrettet virksomhet: presentasjoner i Norge, som Arendalsuka, og på internasjonale konferanser, som International Studies Association. 
Foreløpige funn er at Kina ikke overraskende spiller en aktiv og sentral rolle i global miljøstyring på internasjonale miljøforhandlinger om klimaendringer, biologisk mangfold og kjemikalier/forurensning. Graden av aktivitet og engasjement varierer mellom de tre områdene. 

Til tross for geopolitiske spenninger mellom Kina og vestlige land, er klima et område hvor internasjonalt samarbeid virker mulig. Kinas CO2-utslipp vil trolig falle i 2024, samtidig bygger Kina nye kullkraftverk, som gir noe blandede signaler. Eksport av fornybar energi og elektriske kjøretøy bidrar til det grønne skiftet globalt, men avhengigheten av Kina skaper utfordringer.  Nasjonalt kom Kinas statsråd med nye og mer ambisiøse karbon- og klimamål sommeren 2024, som setter agendaen for det videre arbeidet med klima i Kina, og kan være grunnlag for mer ambisiøse mål og samarbeid globalt. 

Kina delte vertskap med Canada for den 15. Partskonferansen (COP15) under Konvensjonen om biologisk mangfold (CBD) og bidro til enighet om en fornyet avtale for natur. Kina hadde høye ambisjoner om å bevege Naturavtalen i retning av egne målsettinger og spilte en avgjørende rolle for å få afrikanske land på linje med flertallet i den endelige avtalen: Mange afrikanske land frykter at digitalisering av genetisk informasjon kan undergrave CBDs regime for tilgang og rettmessig fordeling av godene fra bruk av genmateriale. Kina skårer generelt lavt på lederskapsindikatorene, i et par tilfeller på grensen til etternøler-indikatoren. Det kinesiske begrepet ‘ecological civilization’ fremsto som nærmere bærekraftig bruk enn bevaring av biologisk mangfold og Kina fikk derfor ingen støtte fra andre parter for denne endringen. Kina skårer lavt på nasjonal naturforvaltning og kan ikke lene seg på egne måloppnåelser for å lede globalt biomangfold-arbeid.
Når det gjelder Kinas rolle i å forme en ny internasjonal miljøavtale for å forhindre og redusere plast forurensning ser vi en stor endring fra et Kina som kun for et par år siden hadde en passiv rolle og viste varsomhet knyttet til å adressere denne problematikken. Kina har styrket sin tilstedeværelse innenfor dette feltet på globalt nivå de senere årene. Avtalen er ikke på plass enda, så det gjenstår å se hvilken rolle Kina vil ha og ta i den siste runde med forhandlinger som skal finne sted i Sør-Korea senere i år. Basert på Kinas posisjonering innenfor rammen på de foregående forhandlingsmøtene er det ikke usannsynlig kommer til å jobbe mot det mest ambisiøse rammeverket for avtalen. 

Det er fremdeles mange spørsmål som skal undersøkes om Kinas energi-, klima- og miljøpolitikk. Prosjektet vil gi innsikt i Kinas nye globale rolle og bidra til å forstå landets nøkkelrolle i andre spørsmål om verdensordenen.

As a major contributor to global environmental problems, China is central to solving them. Its actions have important implications for the effectiveness of global environmental governance (GEG), as China’s role may involve wielding its structural power, building coalitions, and exercising leadership ambitions. Global environmental cooperation could be a suitable arena for practicing leadership because the environment is generally seen as a ‘low-politics’ arena, compared to the ‘high-politics’ associated with foreign policy related to security and trade. International environmental politics are also linked to key national interests in controlling scarce energy and natural resources and foreign policy ambitions, sometimes with crucial repercussions for poor countries, global security, and world order. While environmental politics is advancing on international agendas the geopolitical situation is becoming increasingly tense, not least between China and the West. This calls for a study of China’s role and behaviour in GEG, narrowing our focus to international environmental negotiations on climate change, biodiversity, and chemicals/pollution. These issues may be a useful prism for understanding China’s key role in other world order issues. 
Given China’s domestic politics and role in international environmental politics in the last decade, our overarching research question is: How can we assess and explain China’s roles in international environmental cooperation on climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution / chemicals? This can be divided into two research topics: 1) How to pinpoint and describe (variation in) China’s role – can its role be categorised in terms of leadership, as the laggard, or structural power? 2) What are the major domestic and international drivers accounting for China’s evolving role and ambitions in GEG? 
We examine changes in Chinas behaviour over time and compare across these issue areas.

China’s changing role in global environmental governance. A prism for understanding its key role in other world order issues.

The expected obsolescence of GSM-R and the need to enable digitalisation in train operations has led the European railway sector to set a global plan for the definition of a new radio system, the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), as presented in the EU-Rail System Pillar Report on FRMCS V2 and V3 Scope and Planning (ref. SPG-STG-D-SPG-076-01). A key part of this plan is the delivery by UIC, in the frame of its FRMCS Program, of the FRMCS V3 specifications, also named FRMCS 1st Edition, corresponding to the first implementable version of the new system, for their inclusion in a new CCS-TSI in 2027. Starting from the final UIC FRMCS V2 Specifications & V3 target requirements, expected by December 2024 as a result of the ERA EECT process, there will be consequently a need to verify, complete or amend these V2 Specifications & V3 target requirements through a full testing of FRMCS functions and system, leading then to market ready V3 Specifications. This operational testing is precisely the objective of FP2-MORANE-2 (MObile radio for RAilway Networks in Europe). The first step of the testing activities will be achieved in 3 different labs, run by Ericsson, Nokia and Kontron. They will be followed by 5 different field tests, operated on two railway tracks from ADIF, one from DB, one from TRAFIKVERKET and one from PRORAIL. 4 of these lines are conventional, the 5th, in ADIF network, being a high-speed line. The PRORAIL line will welcome a MNO, KPN. The FP2-MORANE-2 project, coordinated by UIC, takes advantage of the participation of 13 European railways, from which 7 will act as associated partners. It regroups the expertise of 13 product manufacturers, all recognised as key players in the FRMCS domain, and finally benefits from the contribution of UNIFE. Conceived as a continuation of all previous FRMCS activities, such as Horizon 2020 5GRAIL prototyping project or EU-Rail R2DATO FRMCS-related work packages, FP2-MORANE-2 will set the way for FRMCS deployments in Europe, as its predecessor MORANE did for GSM-R 20 years ago.

Flagship project 2 - MObile radio for RAilway Networks in Europe 2

Europe’s Rail Flagship Project 2 - Rail to Digital automated up to autonomous train operation

To meet the increasing demand for transportation of both passengers and freight, FP2-R2DATO will take the advantages of digitalisation and automation to develop the Next Generation ATC and deliver scalable Digital and Automatic (up to Autonomous) Train Operation (DATO) capabilities in order to enhance the capacity of the existing rail networks. Tangible results of FP2-R2DATO are expected to be delivered by 2025 on key topics: ATO, ETCS Hybrid level 3 and Level 3 Moving Block, digital technologies (5G-connectivity and a standardized onboard ICT-platform), and guidelines and methods for fast and cost-effective deployment and migration of DATO throughout Europe. Through these technical improvements FP2-R2DATO will meet the objectives and impacts defined in the ERJU Master Plan and Annual Work Program: contribute to increased punctuality, reliability and productivity of staff, rolling stock and infrastructure. FP2-R2DATO will pay attention to potential risks, such as acceptance by the public, synchronising with ETCS-deployment and potential legal issues,  The overall methodology FP2-R2DATO uses to achieve the desired results is set-up along three stages: from the development of technical enablers, via prototypes that lead to dedicated demonstrators at TRL 6/7. The collaborative approach of industry suppliers, railway operators, infrastructure managers, together with research centres and academia FP2-R2DATO will ensure that each of the technical enablers will be developed at a reasonable cost and will match operational requirements as well as integration innovative technologies. Feedback loops are organised to align research centers, suppliers and railway operators throughout the project, to ensure the technology developed creates the impacts aspired towards a future digitised and automated European rail system.

Europe’s Rail Flagship Project 3 - Holistic and Integrated Asset Management for Europe’s RAIL System

The IAM4RAIL project focuses on seven (7) different integrated demonstrators for rail assets which are key for research and innovation (R&I) in the rail sector.  Integrating asset condition information obtained via advanced monitoring with decision-making tools   and into the traffic management system (TMS), combining available information with artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins are covered as key topics for R&I in IAM4RAIL. Other topics such as interventions using cutting-edge technologies as robotics or additive manufacturing are seen as relevant for improving asset management in the rail sector. An European cross-border, interoperable and holistic integrated approach is needed for those topics and others in the asset management framework, that are to be transferred once developed crucial to harmonise European Rail System. Therefore, IAM4RAIL aims to reinforce the next generation of Intelligent and Integrated Rail Asset Management providing and demonstrating innovative solutions covering fixed and rolling stock assets, minimizing the life cycle costs of assets and extend their lifetime, while meeting safety requirements and improving the reliability, availability and maintainability of the rail system. IAM4RAIL will pave the way for the integration of asset condition information and TMS, enabling optimization of train routing decisions and improving the overall lifecycle of monitored assets. IAM4RAIL ensures an increased volume of rail traffic in existing lines with improved cost efficiency and lower CO2 emissions from their maintenance and operations. Furthermore, construction time and cost of new assets and lines are reduced, the durability and reliability of their assets increased, and their life cycle costs are optimized. Competitiveness of the European railway industry is strengthened through the obtention of more qualified products, and its application improves the performance (capacity, flexibility and punctuality) of the whole railway system.

Europe’s Rail Flagship Project 5 - Transforming Europe’s Rail Freight

The rail freight sector is facing a multitude of challenges such as lack of network capacity and productivity. Manual processes still entail workers safety risks. Rail must adopt the emerging digital technologies to meet the customer needs.  FP5-TRANS4M-R brings together 71 partners from end-users, large industry, railway undertakings  operators and wagon keepers, SMEs, academia and research, delivering on the rail freight sectors commitment to increase of the modal split share to 50% by 2030 revoking the causality between economic growth in Europe and pollution as well as congestions, positively impacting Europes citizens quality of life. FP5-TRANS4M-Rs overall goal is to establish rail freight as backbone of the lowest emission and most resilient logistics chain in Europe fulfilling the end customer requirements to their full satisfaction. Two technology clusters Full Digital Freight Train Operation (FDFTO) and Seamless Freight Operation will develop, validate and demonstrate the  FP5-TRANS4M-R technologies following an integrated systemic approach across the sector, in a competitive manner - as only then the expected automation benefits can be fully realised. Integrating DAC-enabled solutions at non- arguable interoperability with software defined systems and digital rail services will lead to increased capacity, higher throughput and shorter transportation duration. It will strengthen the cross-border coordination and cooperation between rail infrastructure managers and finally deliver optimised overall management of the rail network.  FP5-TRANS4M-R's credo is: seamless, integrated, interoperable, validated and EU-wide authorised solutions, to achieve a single EU rail freight technology framework with strictly managed interfaces for an effective system integration and seamless operation across countries, actors and modes. These objectives set the foundation, frame, and ambition for the project with an impact on the overall transport and logistics sector in EU.
