New Paleo REanalYsis FOR improved understanding of Pacific Decadal Variability

The Pacific Decadal Variability (PDV) characterises the fluctuations in sea surface temperatures across the Pacific Ocean over decadal to multi-decadal timescales. As the primary driver of variability at these scales, PDV exerts a significant influence on the climate in surrounding regions. It contributes to significant regional climate events such as floods and bushfires while also playing a pivotal role at the global scale by amplifying and mitigating human-induced global warming. Despite a significant effort in recent years to understand the root mechanisms of PDV, our understanding remains hampered by the limited duration of instrumental observations that mainly cover the 20th century with large undercovered sub-regions. It ultimately inhibits the study of longer-term climate variations and especially the role of ocean dynamics. This knowledge gap significantly hampers our confidence in climate projections for the next few decades, particularly at the regional scale. Based on the knowledge of the applicant on the use of paleoclimate proxies combined with climate models to retrieve past climate changes and the expertise of the host institution on data assimilation and climate dynamics, Prey4PDV aims at providing the first paleoclimate reanalysis taking into account the exchanges between the atmosphere and ocean in the Pacific using a state-of-the-art Earth System Model over the past 500 years. Using the product together with sensitivity numerical simulations, we will investigate the critical drivers of the multi-decadal variability in the Pacific. During this fellowship, I will transfer my knowledge in using paleo records within an Earth System Model to the host institution, while learning state-of-the-art data assimilation methods, running numerical simulations, and tropical climate dynamics from the host institution. Therefore, this fellowship will place me at the forefront of an emerging scientific topic by applying state-of-the-art paleo data assimilation.

HiAOOS will develop, implement, and validate several ocean observing technologies to improve data collection in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean. A network of multipurpose moorings will be deployed for two years in the deep Nansen and Amundsen Basins. The network will provide point measurements of ocean and sea ice and active and passive acoustic data for several applications, including acoustic thermometry, geo-positioning of underwater floats, detection of marine mammals, geohazards and human generate noise. The mooring system will build on the successful basin wide Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment-CAATEX experiment and extend the existing Mooring Observations from the Atlantic Water Inflow Experiment (ATWAIN).  A new generation of moorings will be developed where data can be transferred to the surface using ROV or winch technology. Ice buoys with new acoustic array technology will be developed for testing of underwater geo-positioning, local navigation networks for glider operations and for localization of geophysical events. These developments will advance several research infra structures with new observing technology and create new opportunities for forefront research. To unlock the capabilities of the new observing system methods and tools will be developed to analyse and visualize the observations for different applications using digital methods and technologies including  machine learning. The methods and tools will be ingested into a digital platform blue Insight, and available through Zenodo. Training and use cases will use the platform to train different user groups associated with research infrastructures, research communities and technology developers. All data, methods and tools will be available following the FAIR principles. Field experiments will be carried out every summer from 2024 to 2026, and every field experiment will be assessed with respect to environemntal impact prior to the start of the experiment.

High Arctic Ocean Observation System

Arctic Cross-Copernicus forecast products for sea Ice and iceBERGs

Sea ice and icebergs are a major security risk for navigation and fisheries in Arctic waters. Both will remain a significant threat even in a warmer Arctic, where traffic is expected to increase. Sea Ice Services are needed more and more to support less experienced captains with automated high quality forecasts and new information about icebergs that are not available today. To monitor and forecast sea ice types and icebergs ahead of time, adequate forecasts of sea ice, ocean, wind, and wave conditions for the whole Arctic are crucial. The Copernicus Marine and Climate Change Services provide such information products. However their uncertainties are not provided in a consistent and user-friendly manner. Reliable uncertainty estimates can however be based on forecast ensembles across the two Copernicus Services.  ACCIBERG will improve the quality of sea ice, and ocean products and their uncertainty estimates in both Copernicus Services. It will also extend the coverage of the satellite detection of icebergs and develop a completely new iceberg forecast service. ACCIBERG will build upon state of the art sea ice and ocean models, remote sensing algorithms, data assimilation and cloud computing to offer probabilistic sea ice and iceberg forecasts based on Copernicus data consistently. National or commercial sea ice services are limited to smaller regions and will benefit from the increased accuracy and consistency across the Copernicus products.  The new forecasts will be demonstrated in ACCIBERG by European Ice Services and ships of opportunity. The new iceberg forecasts will be automated and validated, and benefit a wide range of user groups navigating in the Arctic, from fisheries to cruise tourism, including Marine Surveillance under the Copernicus Security Service. We will provide prototype products ready to be implemented in the Copernicus services and accessible from a single entry point: its inherent cloud computing solution. 

CAPARDUS is a Coordination and Support Action with focus on capacity-building to develop guidelines, standards and best practices related to exploitation of new technologies and utilization of data to support sustainable development in the Arctic. The capacity-building involve scientists, students, technology providers, economic actors, local communities, regulators and their organisations, who will participate in a series of workshops and research schools. These events will be used as part of case studies in local communities in different regions, showing how the social-environmental systems are changing Arctic communities and what are the drivers for these changes. The climate change and its consequences in the Arctic leads to improved access to the Arctic and its resources, offering new opportunities for communities and for economic development related to exploration of natural resources, tourism, transport, and other industries. This presents extraordinary requirements for planning and decision-making based on scientific and economic data, assessments and predictions. A prerequisite for good planning is access to data and information of relevance to the operators in the Arctic. The project will develop a Comprehensive Framework Model for Arctic Standard and Best Practices as a collaborative effort between scientists, local communities and other stakeholder groups, including economic actors who are interested in business development in the Arctic. Towards the end of the project CAPARDUS will provide a roadmap for implementation of the comprehensive framework for sustainable economic development in the Arctic, to the benefit of both local communities and other operators. CAPARDUS will thereby contribute to EU’s Arctic policy, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

Capacity-building in Arctic standardisation develoment

The overall objective of INTAROS is to develop an integrated Arctic Observation System (iAOS) by extending, improving and unifying existing systems in the different regions of the Arctic. INTAROS will have a strong multidisciplinary focus, with tools for integration of data from atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and terrestrial sciences, provided by institutions in Europe, North America and Asia. Satellite earth observation data plays an increasingly important role in such observing systems, because the amount of EO data for observing the global climate and environment grows year by year.  In situ observing systems are much more limited due to logistical constraints and cost limitations. The sparseness of in situ data is therefore the largest gap in the overall observing system.  INTAROS will assess strengths and weaknesses of existing observing systems and contribute with innovative solutions to fill some of the critical gaps in the in situ observing network. INTAROS will develop a platform, iAOS,  to search for and access data from distributed databases. The evolution into a sustainable Arctic observing system requires coordination, mobilization and cooperation between the existing European and international infrastructures (in-situ and remote including space-based), the modeling communities and relevant stakeholder groups. INTAROS will include development of community-based observing systems, where local knowledge is merged with scientific data. An integrated Arctic Observation System will enable better-informed decisions and better-documented processes within key sectors (e.g. local communities, shipping, tourism, fisheries), in order to strengthen the societal and economic role of the Arctic region and support the EU strategy for the Arctic and related maritime and environmental policies.

Integrated Arctic observation system

There is a recognised need for establishing sound methods for the characterisation of satellite-based Earth Observation (EO) data by surface-based and sub-orbital measurement platforms - spanning Atmosphere, Ocean and Land observations and the entire radiance spectrum. Robust EO instrument characterisation is about significantly more than simply where and when a given set of EO and ground-based / sub-orbital measurements is taken. It requires, in addition, quantified uncertainty estimation for the reference measurements and an understanding of additional uncertainties that accrue through mismatches in sampling location and time and the distinct measurement footprints to enable a complete mapping of the reference measurements onto EO measurements. It also needs user tools which include statistical tools and the integrating capabilities afforded by data assimilation systems to enable users to access and work with the data in a ‘virtual observatory’ setting. It is only if robust uncertainty estimates are placed on the ground-based and sub-orbital data and used in the analysis that unambiguous interpretation of EO sensor performance can occur.
