Potetskrell, et biprodukt fra industriproduksjon av potet (pommes frites, flak, chips mm.) er en råstoff ressurs som kan bli bedre utnyttet til nye formål. Skrellet er nemlig en rik kilde på antioksidanter, stoffer som planter naturlig har i seg for å beskytte mot skadelige UV-stråler og reaktive forbindelser som oksygen radikaler. Antioksidanter behøver vi også å tilsette i matvarer for å beskytte og ta vare på umettet fett så det ikke blir harskt og vondt i kontakt med luft. I dag brukes flere ulike syntetiske stoffer i matvarer for å hindre oksidasjon av fett og oljer. Men det er reist bekymring rundt sikkerheten for bruken av dem. Matvareindustrien, myndigheter og forbruker ønsker derfor å fjerne flere syntetiske antioksidanter og erstatte dem med naturlig alternativer. Det er imidlertid svært få slike produkter som er godkjent og tilgjengelig på markedet. Prosjektet Peel Preserve, som har et klart bærekraft mål, skal vise om et uttrekk av antioksidanter laget på industrielt potetskrell råstoff kan fungere som konserveringsmiddel og erstatte noen av de stoffene som brukes i dag. Tre næringsmiddelbedrifter skal teste potetskrell-ekstraktet i noen av sine produkter og utføre både interne og eksterne analyser på effekten. Men en viktig forutsetning for at potetantioksidant kan tas i bruk som nytt tilsetningsstoff i mat er at det blir godkjent av den Europeiske matsikkerhets myndigheten (EFSA) og gitt et E-nummer. Prosjektet skal igangsette denne lengre flertrinns godkjennings prosessen. Parallelt skal det utvikles en forretningsmodell og nødvendig beskyttelse rundt teknologien. Dersom industrien etter testingen av potetantioksidanten, vurderer denne som er god erstatning til konkurransedyktig pris, og en EFSA-godkjenning kan oppnås på sikt, åpner det for å kommersialisere et naturlig plante-basert produkt til beste for forbruker og for miljøet. Bak prosjektet Peel Preserve står Høgskolen i Innlandet i samarbeid med Nofima og Klosser Innovasjon.

Preserving foods with potato peels: Industry-relevant validation and first regulatory assessment of a new natural antioxidant

Politics and Security in the Arctic (POPSARC) tar utgangspunkt i to overordnede spørsmål. For det første, hva kjennetegner vestlige alliertes tilnærminger til sikkerhet i Arktis de senere årene? For det andre, hva kjennetegner samspillet mellom disse vestlige allierte i Arktis, innenfor nøkkelområder av sikkerhetspolitikken? Mye forskningslitteratur har i de senere årene sett på Russland og Kinas ambisjoner for og tilstedeværelse i Arktis, samt vestlige aktørers reaksjoner og tilsvar på disse to statenes signaler og opptreden. Mindre oppmerksomhet har blitt viet endringer i dynamikken og samspillet mellom allierte på vestlig side. Her vil POPSARC bidra til å skaffe til veie oppdatert kunnskap.

Prosjektet fokuserer på åtte stater: De syv arktiske statene Norge, Danmark, Island, Finland, Sverige, Canada og USA, samt Storbritannia - som definerer seg som Arktis' nærmeste nabo. Forskningsteamet vil undersøke disse statenes tilnærminger til og samspill i arktiske sikkerhetsspørsmål på tre områder i perioden 2014-2026: Diplomati, militært samarbeid og infrastruktur-styring. Prosjektet trekker på et teoretisk rammeverk hvor ideer om utenrikspolitiske handlingsrepertoar, felleskapsbygging og differensiering står sentralt. Dette rammeverket vil bli brukt til å analysere endringer i diskurs og observerbare samhandlingsspraksiser på de tre områdene. På den måten vil prosjektet gi verdifulle innsikter til forskere, men også beslutningstakere og den opplyste allmennheten.

At a time marked by major international turbulence – war in Europe, the breakdown of established diplomatic fora, the entry of new actors and stakeholders – there is an urgent need for also understanding the approaches of and interaction dynamics between Western allies operating in or near the Arctic. Power Politics and Security in the Arctic (POPSARC) addresses this knowledge need. While there is a rapidly growing body of literature tracing and unpacking the ambitions and actions of Russia and China in the Arctic, and Western actors’ responses to their moves, limited scholarly attention has been given to the (changing) fabric of allied interactions in the region. POPSARC will theorise, trace, and unpack allied interaction patterns in and around the Arctic.

Doing so, the project asks two questions. First, what characterises Western allies’ current approaches to security in the Arctic? Second, how are allied interactions in the Arctic sphere materialising – in statements, strategies, and observable material practices – across key security domains? Zooming in on the time period 2014-2026, the POPSARC team will study Western allies’ approaches to and interaction patterns in Arctic security across three domains: Diplomacy, military collaboration, and infrastructure governance. Theoretically, it will employ a theory framework organised around the concepts of foreign policy repertoires, community-building, and differentiation. Empirically, it combines the study of dominant and alternative representations in official and wider political and discourses, with a study of observable interaction practices in the domains of diplomacy, military collaboration, and infrastructure governance. In terms of output, the project will deliver academic articles, events, talks, popular publications, and social media engagement. Project results will add to the knowledge production on Arctic security, help policy makers arrive at better-informed decisions, and educate members of the public.

Power Politics and Security in the Arctic

I Norge har det vært en økende trend til å benytte regnbueørret (Oncorhynchus mykiss) i oppdrett på grunn av dens raske vekst og toleranse for et bredt spekter av miljøforhold. I dag utgjør regnbueørret 5 % av den årlige produksjon av laksefisk i Norge. Produksjonen har økt med 14 % det siste tiåret, dvs. fra 14453 til 85233 tonn, noe som gjør regnbueørret til den nest mest produserte arten etter atlantisk laks. Til tross for den store interessen er oppdrett av regnbueørret begrenset på grunn av ulike produksjonsutfordringer. Næringen er bl.a avhengig av sesongbasert rognproduksjon. En utfordring er redusert tilgang på rogn i perioden fra juni til oktober, hvilket resulterer i en 5-måneders periode uten tilgang på stor settefisk, fra mars til juni året etter. Videre er forståelsen av hvordan ulike miljøfaktorer initierer og påvirker utviklingen av sjøvannstoleranse dårlig dokumentert. Bl.a. er overføring til sjøvann basert på kroppsstørrelse i stedet for osmoregulatorisk kapasitet. Av den grunn kan settefisken møte ulike helse og velferds utfordringer etter overføring til sjøvann, noe som kan forklare økende dødelighet (rundt 10 %) og høy forekomst av taper fisk (rundt 10 %) i sjøanleggene. Denne utfordringen påfører oppdrettere betydelige økonomiske tap og representerer et velferdsproblem.
I Sande-prosjektet har vi som mål å utvikle nye produksjonsprotokoller for regnbueørret, fra rogn til stor settefisk, basert på optimalisert temperatur, lysrytme og vannkvalitet. En kritisk faktor i prosjektet vil være testing og validering av nye oppdrettsprosedyrer for å kontrollere fiskevekst og utviklingshastighet for å forlenge eller forkorte smoltproduksjonsperioden og tidspunkt for utsetting til sjø. I tillegg vil vi utvikle nye verktøy og analyser for å vurdere smoltkvalitet og tidspunkt for smoltvindu. Denne kunnskapen vil utgjøre en ny biologisk protokoll som tar sikte på å forbedre produksjonen av settefisk av regnbueørret, og som kan leveres til sjøanlegg hele året.

Idéen bak dette prosjektet er å utvikle en sesong uavhengig protokoll (Best Management Practice, BMP) for regnbueørret, fra befruktet rogn til leveringsklar smolt (settefisk), basert på optimalisert temperatur, lysrytme kontroll og styrt vannkvalitet (CO2 nivå), herunder kartlegge konsekvenser på fiskens ytelse, fysiologi, helse og produksjonstid. 
Prosjektet vil innbefatte tre feltforsøk som gjennomføres hos Sande Settefisk. I første forsøk vil effekt av temperatur på tilvekst, helse og kvalitetsutvikling hos regnbueørret i RAS bli kartlagt. Ett sentralt spørsmål vil være; Hvor mye kan vi endre produksjonstiden til ørret i settefiskfasen i vekstintervallet 20 til 400 gr gitt at snitt-temperaturen endres fra 12 til 8?C.  Dette spørsmålet er viktig da en forsinkelse kan benyttes til å dekke perioder hvor oppdretter står uten settefisk som følge av underskudd på egg om våren. Videre vil vi kartlegge hva som er optimalt lysregime under styrt smoltutvikling, herunder gir best smoltkvalitet. Avslutningsvis vil vi undersøke sammenheng mellom variasjon i vannkvalitet (CO2 nivå) på velferd, tilvekst, helse og kvalitet hos regnbueørret. En viktig del av utviklingsarbeidet vil være teste og validere en nyutviklet analyse for vurdering av smoltkvalitet hos regnbueørret (1. Innovasjon). Basert på positive funn og en integrert tolkning av samspillet mellom biologi, drift og vannmiljø, vil vi foreslå analysemetoder og strategier som bedrer fiskens kvalitet og tilvekstpotensial. Kunnskapen vil sammenfattes i en ny biologisk protokoll (BMP, 2. Innovasjon) for optimal sesonguavhengig produksjon av høykvalitets regnbueørret.  I sum vil prosjektet bidra til å sikre en jevn tilgang på settefisk som kan overføres til sjø hele året, og derav styrke oppdrett av regnbueørret i ett bærekraftig fremtidsrettet perspektiv.

Sesonguavhengig produksjon av regnbueørret

Kan saueavl være viktig får å bekjempe klimaendringer? Svaret er faktisk ja! Grunnen er at sauer produserer metan, en drivhusgass som bidrar til global oppvarming. Hva om vi kunne avle sauer som slipper ut mindre metan? Dette er selve essensen i prosjektet "Sustain Sheep."
I dette internasjonale samarbeidsprosjektet involverer forskere fra ulike land (Irland, Storbritannia, New Zealand, Frankrike, Norge og Uruguay) seg i avansert teknologi kalt Portable Accumulation Chambers (PAC) – mobile klimakamre – for å måle metanutslipp fra sauer. Gjennom disse målingene skal man dykke ned i genetikken bak metanutslipp og fôreffektivitet. Resultatet blir anbefalinger for nye avlsmål for sau for å redusere klimafotavtrykket. Potensialet og kostnadene knyttet til implementering av disse avlsmålene vil også bli grundig vurdert.

I Norge vil data fra Sauekontrollen og en genomisk referansepopulasjon bli utnyttet for å analysere genetikken bak metanutslipp hos sauer. I tillegg vil maskinlæring bli anvendt for å avdekke sammenhengen mellom sauens vekt, fôrinntak og metanutslipp. Det vil videre undersøkes hvor effektivt det er å selektere sauer med lavere metanutslipp ved å bruke en simuleringsmodell, en såkalt digital tvilling, av det norske avlsprogrammet for sau. Avslutningsvis vil effekten av å avle for redusert metanutslipp fra sau på klimagassutslippene per kilo slakt produsert bli beregnet ved hjelp av en gårdsmodell. Effekten på de nasjonale klimagassutslippene vil også bli vurdert.

Breeding can be a cost-effective way of reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions from sheep, by direct selection for CH4 emissions or indirectly through improved productivity. Currently there is under-adoption of these measures as benefits are not captured by the market. Sustain Sheep builds on the successful Joint Call ERA-Net project Grass To Gas and will create infrastructure for incorporation of low environmental impact into national breeding schemes that dovetails into the IPCC inventory. Sustain Sheep is unique as all partner countries (Ireland, United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Norway and Uruguay) have invested in the same CH4 measurement technology (Portable Accumulation Chambers). 
Sustain Sheep will 1) review the current scientific status of the potential to breed sheep for reduced CH4 emissions (WP1), 2) investigate genetics of CH4 emission and feed efficiency and model the mitigation potential from breeding and give recommendations for new breeding goals (WP2), 3)  forecast uptake rates, cost and abatement of breeding for reduced CH4 emissions (WP3) and 4) determine the best mechanism for dissemination and implementation of project result to maximize stakeholder involvement (WP4). 
In Norway, genetic and genomic analyses of data from the Norwegian Sheep Recording System and the genomic reference population recorded for CH4 emission will be done by NSG (WP2.1). Machine learning to investigate  relationships between GHG emission, ewe live weight and feed intake will be applied and validated by NMBU (WP2.2). The expected response to selection for breeding goals including enteric CH4 and/or feed efficiency will be predicted by NMBU using a digital twin of the Norwegian sheep breeding scheme and data from WP2.1, and the effect on emission intensities (kg CO2-equivalents per kg product) will be investigated using a whole-farm model. The impact of alternative breeding goals on GHG emissions at national level will be quantified using IPCC methodology (WP2.3).

Reducing sheep methane emissions: sustainability in practice via new breeding goals

Hvordan former etterretning russisk innenrikspolitikk og utenriks- og sikkerhetspolitikk? Dagens Russland karakteriseres ofte som en «KGB-stat». Nåværende og tidligere etterretningsoffiserer, inkludert president Putin, dominerer i økende grad politikk og økonomi, og bringer med seg kultur, verdensbilde, nettverk og metoder som er typiske for russisk etterretning. Dette er godt kjent, men det er lite systematisk og teoretisk basert kunnskap om hvordan etterretning faktisk påvirker russisk politikk. For å endre på dette har RUSINTELSTATE samlet et team av håndplukkede, internasjonale Russland-eksperter innen etterretningsstudier, kulturstudier, samtidshistorie og internasjonale relasjoner. Anglo-amerikanske etterretningsstudier (for ikke å snakke om statsvitenskap og internasjonale relasjoner) ser gjerne på politikk og etterretning som atskilt. Etterretning forstås snevert, som en spesifikk form for kunnskap som skal gi politisk nøytral beslutningsstøtte. Denne normative tilnærmingen er imidlertid dårlig tilpasset Russland, en autoritær, personalistisk stat med en distinkt historie. RUSINTELSTATE, derimot, a) analyserer etterretning i videre forstand, som aktører, aktiviteter og kultur; og b) anerkjenner at etterretning og politikk ikke kan forstås atskilt. Etterretningsaktører (organisasjoner/nettverk) kjemper for innflytelse ved å posisjonere seg politisk. Etterretningsaktiviteter (kunnskapsproduksjon) både påvirker og blir påvirket av politiske vurderinger. Etterretningskultur – hele spekteret fra propaganda-narrativer til dyptfølt ideologi – både former og blir formet av oppfatningene til aktørene. Vi framholder at verken den russiske staten eller dens etterretning kan forstås atskilt. Vårt begrep ‘hybrid etterretningsstat’, som understreker den gjensidige innflytelsen mellom russisk politikk og etterretning, er et bedre redskap til å forstå russisk utenriks- og sikkerhetspolitikk, og gjør oss bedre i stand til å håndtere dens utfordringer mot vår sikkerhet.

How does intelligence shape Russian domestic politics and foreign and security policy? Intelligence is ubiquitous in Russia. Current and former intelligence officers, including President Putin, increasingly dominate politics and economy, bringing with them the culture, world-view, networks, and methods of the Russian intelligence community. This is widely acknowledged, yet how it impacts Russia’s foreign and security policy is still poorly understood by academics. Both intelligence as such and its role in IR remain under-theorized, and research on Russian intelligence is highly compartmentalized. To change this, RUSINTELSTATE enlists a team of carefully selected international Russia experts from the complementing fields of intelligence studies, cultural studies, contemporary history, and IR. Moving beyond the models of ‘the KGB state’ on the one hand and ‘intelligence-as-a-tool’ of the state on the other, we advance the novel theoretical perspective of the Russian Hybrid Intelligence State. This allows for a nuanced and culturally and contextually sensitive approach based on the recognition that neither the Russian state nor its intelligence can be understood in isolation from each other. Contrary to the traditional and often normative notion of intelligence as a specific type of knowledge, we employ a wide definition of (state-centered) intelligence as actors, activities, and culture, which allows us to analyze the different ways in which intelligence and politics influence each other: a) actors (services/networks) vying for influence by positioning themselves; b) activities (knowledge production) that may both be heavily influenced by political considerations and influence these considerations; and c) culture, i.e. both narratives created for propaganda and deep-seated beliefs of the intelligence services, as well as everything in between. This makes us better equipped to understand Russian foreign/security policy, and to deal with its challenges to our security.

The Russian Hybrid Intelligence State

Adaptation to climate change requires in-depth understanding of climate change driven risks, including their determinants (hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities) and impacts to human, production and natural systems. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks (IRISCC) is a consortium of diverse and complementary leading research infrastructures (RIs) covering disciplines from natural sciences to social sciences, across different domains and sectors. IRISCC provides scientific and knowledge services to foster cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking to improve Europe's resilience to climate change. IRISCC ensures a “one-stop-shop” for various user communities on climate change risk related RI services by setting up a dedicated Catalogue of services and related access management system both for granting transnational (onsite and remote) and offering virtual access. The Catalogue of services will be built through three consecutive releases, each delivering increasingly integrated services to its user communities. The IRISCC service integration will include Service Design Labs employing co-design and transdisciplinary action, and Service Demonstrators benchmarking the integrated cross-RI services. In addition to services aimed towards the scientific community, IRISCC will offer knowledge services aimed towards policymakers and other stakeholders. This is done together with risk management platforms. The research enabled by IRISCC contributes to future reports on climate change effects (IPCC, IPBES) as well as policy- and decision-making to meet the targets of climate adaptation strategies. IRISCC contributes to training a new generation of scientists to efficiently use RI services and for data stewardship. Data from IRISCC will be open and made available in compliance with FAIR principles and linked to European initiatives such as EOSC. Strong links will be created between IRISCC and current and future efforts under Horizon Europe.

Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change risks

Akvakultur står for halvparten av all fisken som konsumeres av mennesker og har derfor en betydelig role i matforsyningssystemet vårt. Dessverre er denne industrien stadig truet av infeksjonssykdommer, noe som truer både bærekraft, dyreveldferd og matsikkerhet. Å finne vaksiner og terapeutiske løsninger på slike infeksjonssykdommer er av høy prioritet, men vår begrensede forståelse av immunforsvaret til fisken har ført til få gjennombrudd i praksis. Vi har nylig oppdaget et mandel-lignende lymfeorgan, kalt “Nemausean Lymfeorgan (NELO) i Sebrafisk og laks, i gjellehulen en struktur som fungerer som hovedinngangen for patogener og er involvert i mange sykdommer som påvirker opprettsfisk. NELO inneholder mange immunforsvarceller og viser involvering i immunrespons. Denne oppdagelsen foreslår at NELO spiller en viktig rolle i fiskens immunforsvar når den nedkjemper infeksjoner. Hovedmålet med dette prosjektet er å undersøke NELOs rolle i fiskens immunforsvar og utforske muligheter for utvikling av vaksiner i akvakultur. For å oppnå vårt mål vil vi først undersøke nøkkeltrekk ved NELO i den mye studerte Sebrafiske. For dette vil vi bruke avanserte bildeteknikker og teknologier som kan markere immunfunksjon på protein- og RNA-nivå. Vi vil deretter undersøke NELO i laks. I tillegg vil vi i samarbeid med internasjonale partnere studere NELOs innflytelse på immunovervåkning under infeksjoner og vaksiner. Resultatene av dette prosjektet vil utvide vår forståelse av fiskeimmunsystemet, bidra til å håndtere utfordringene med infeksjonssykdommer i akvakultur og på lang sikt gi nye innsikter inn i menneskers helse.

Aquaculture faces major challenges posed by infectious diseases. Despite the importance of these issues, our knowledge of fish immunology, which is a crucial defense against infections and the foundation of vaccination strategies, is surprisingly limited. This is especially true concerning the branchial cavity region, even though it represents a major portal of entry for pathogens. We recently used the well-developed zebrafish model to explore the lymphoid organization of the gills and their surrounding tissues. We recently discovered a new mucosal lymphoid organ interconnected with the gill immune network, which we named the Nemausean Lymphoid Organ (NELO). We found that NELO is composed of numerous immune cells (T cells, B cells, and antigen-presenting cells) embedded in a complex network of supporting cells. Whereas it lacks key markers of primary lymphoid organs, it displays several other features of secondary lymphoid organs. Interestingly, the NELO of Salmon shows the same 3D organization, interconnections with gills, and abundance of T cells as the zebrafish NELO. The aim of this project is to determine the function of NELO and its relevance for fish diseases and vaccines. We will use the zebrafish and salmon models in a comparative and cost-effective approach. First, we will precisely define key features such as its entire cell composition, and functions; for this we will combine high-resolution 3D multiplex immuno-histology (immunofluorescence microscopy / in situ hybridization), single-cell RNA sequencing, and functional assays. Major findings in zebrafish will be compared to the investigations in salmon. Then, with collaborators from a European consortium (NucNanoFish), we will inspect antigen-sampling and immune reactions from NELO upon exposure to different diseases and vaccine treatments. Collectively, our data will greatly enhance our understanding of the fish immune system and be important for the aquaculture industry.

SecureIoTM-prosjektet har som mål å omdefinere cybersikkerhetsstandardene for nettverkskoblede enheter. Når alt fra smarte kjøleskap til sporingssystemer inngår i IoT-økosystemet, blir deres sikkerhet av største betydning. Sentralt i denne innsatsen står Tsetlin Machine, en banebrytende metode innen maskinlæring som forener avansert beregningskraft med energieffektivitet.

I motsetning til tradisjonelle maskinlæringsrammeverk, setter Tsetlin Machine seg frem ved å kombinere høy ytelse med energieffektivitet. Med stadig flere enheter, fra essensielt medisinsk utstyr til kaffemaskiner, som integreres i IoT, setter SecureIoTM fokus på å styrke deres evne til å motstå cyberangrep og dermed beskytte både dataintegritet og privatliv.

Dette innovative prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Center of Artificial Intelligence Research ved Universitetet i Agder, Sørlandet Hospital Trust, og Newcastle University. Det bygger på fire nøkkelpilarer for innovasjon.

Først og fremst vektlegger Kontinuerlig Læring enheters evne til stadig å lære og tilpasse seg, samtidig som tidligere kunnskap bevares. Adaptiv Kompleksitet refererer til Tsetlin-maskinens evne til dynamisk å endre sin modellkompleksitet etter oppgavens krav, balanserende presisjon og energibruk. Cybermotstandsdyktighet, som tredje pilare, går videre enn bare å oppdage trusler; det gir systemet kapasiteten til å aktivt bekjempe cybertrusler i sanntid. Til slutt sikrer Sømløs Integrasjon at SecureIoTMs løsninger kan integreres smidig inn i eksisterende IoT-nettverk, forsterkende deres innebygde intelligens og sikkerhet.

Skulle SecureIoTM realisere sine ambisjoner, kan det omdefinere dagens standarder for trusseldeteksjon innen IoT, med metoder som er mer adaptive, robuste og energieffektive.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has major security concerns because of its limited ability to dedicate system resources to security mechanisms. Combined with billions of resource-constrained devices in healthcare, agriculture, and industry, this offers cybercrime an economic incentive. IoT is heterogeneous systems, making traditional security considerably more difficult to implement. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are particularly difficult since conventional stand-alone anomaly detection cannot run at low energy, required for power-hungry Wi-Fi.  We need IDS for IoT, as attackers can gain device access when passive security fails. 

Tsetlin Machines (TMs), a new machine learning (ML) technique based on the Tsetlin Automaton, can meet the energy requirements of IoT. TM hardware (HW) has proven over ten orders of magnitude less energy and faster learning compared to NNs, outperforming vanilla and binary forms of CNNs and Feed-Forward on well-established benchmarks. TMs extract common patterns in data via frequent pattern mining and resource allocation instead of output error minimization, which is prone to overfitting. With its ultra-low-energy architecture, TM is key to creating state-of-the-art IDS, but it requires study in three crucial areas. 

1) Continual Learning for TM is crucial to online training as new sensor data or WIFI signals enter without catastrophic forgetting.  Machine learning, particularly TM, needs better techniques to prevent catastrophic forgetting. 

2) Automatic tuning of hyperparameters for multimodal and temporal data is extremely difficult since IoT and its heterogeneity make individual devices modality-specific. This means that each device requires specific hyperparameter tuning, which is impossible for millions of IoT devices.

3) Cyber-Resilient Training is crucial to training robust models where attackers can't modify data undetected. An attack can readily deceive training without robust models, making anomaly detection ineffective.

SecureIoTM: Ultra-low-energy IoT Intrusion Detection Systems using Logic-based Tsetlin Machines

296 millioner mennesker lever med kronisk hepatitt B (KHB), og ubehandlet vil 15-40% av disse dø av komplikasjoner til KHB. Antivirale medisiner hindrer sykdomsprogresjon og død, men i fattige land er det nesten ingen som mottar slik behandling pga kompliserte behandlingsretningslinjer og mangel på laboratorietester. 

I 2015 etablerte vår gruppe et pilotprogram for behandling av KHB på et referansesykehus i Etiopia. I 2021/22 ekspanderte vi til fire distriktssykehus rundt i landet, der målet var å studere forenklet behandling av KHB. Med dette prosjektet planlegger vi å desentralisere KHB-omsorgen til primærhelsetjenesten, som vil være avgjørende for å oppnå universell tilgang til KHB-behandling i Afrika. Dette er et forskningssamarbeid med partnere i Norge (Sykehuset i Vestfold, Universitetet i Oslo) and Etiopia (Addis Ababa University, St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College). 

Vi skal studere ulike behandlingsmodeller, som hver har sine teoretiske fordeler og ulemper:  
i)	Standardmodellen («behandle kun hvis…»): Dette har vært gjeldende modell i alle retningslinjer til nå. Her er ideen å identifisere og behandle pasienter med høyest risiko for sykdomsprogresjon og død.
ii)	Inkluderende modell («behandle alle unntatt…»): Dette er en helt ny tilnærming. Generelt er det langt lettere å avgjøre hvem som ikke trenger behandling, og med denne modellen får alle behandling med mindre de faller i lavrisiko-gruppen. 
iii)	Teste-og-behandle («behandle alle»): Dette er den enkleste tilnærmingen der alle med KHB skal ha behandling uten behov for ytterligere laboratorietester.

Det primære endepunktet er død og dekompensert leversykdom. I tillegg planlegger vi å studere kostnadseffektiviteten av de ulike behandlingsmodellene, og sammenligne med den klassiske sykehusbaserte modellen.  

Implementeringsstudier som dette har lenge vært etterlyst av Verdens Helseorganisasjon for å finne fram til enklere og bedre modeller for behandling av KHB i fattige land. Vår studie vil direkte informere internasjonale retningslinjer for KHB og således være et viktig bidrag i å nå målet om å eliminere virushepatitt som en samfunnshelsetrussel innen 2030.

An estimated 296 million people live with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) globally. In the absence of treatment, 15-40% of these will die from its complications. Antiviral therapy effectively prevents disease progression and death in CHB. In low-income countries, however, antiviral treatment is rarely available due to complex treatment guidelines, poor laboratory capacity, and lack of public funding. 

In 2015, our group set up a pilot treatment program for CHB at a tertiary hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 2021/22, this program was extended to four regional secondary hospitals to study simplified CHB care in a low-income country. With the present application we aim to decentralize CHB therapy to rural settings, which will be essential to achieve universal access to antiviral therapy in Africa. We will study different treatment models, each of which has its theoretical pros and cons: i) standard model (“treat only if…”), ii) inclusive model (“treat all except…”), and iii) test-and-treat (“treat all”). The primary endpoint will be death or liver decompensation, and secondary endpoints will be programmatic and laboratory success indicators. Finally, we will study the cost-effectiveness of these decentralized models and compare with the tertiary/secondary hospital-based model. 

Implementation research, such as our study, is of vital importance to respond to the research gaps identified by the World Health Organization in hepatitis B care. Our study is expected to directly inform international hepatitis B guidelines and will be a major contribution to the efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

Decentralization of hepatitis B care in sub-Saharan Africa

Disse bittesmå barna står overfor en stor risiko – å bli født for tidlig er en viktig dødsårsak for barn under 5 år over hele verden.
Her er avtalen: Noen av disse «premature» er enda mindre, og veier under 1500 gram, noe som gjør dem svært sårbare. De har sart hud som lett taper vann og varme, og det er mer sannsynlig at de blir smittet og syke. Det er derfor vi går til en enkel, men lovende løsning – å påføre solsikkefrøolje (SSO) på huden deres.
Tidligere studier i Sør-Asia viser at bruk av denne oljen på huden til disse små babyene kan hjelpe dem med å unngå infeksjoner, vokse bedre, utvikle seg normalt og til og med overleve. Verdens helseorganisasjon (WHO) ønsker å vite mer og har spurt: "Hva skjer når vi bruker mykgjørende midler, som SSO, på disse premature eller lav fødselsvekt (LBW) babyer i forskjellige land, spesielt i Afrika?"
Så, her er planen: Vi skal gjennomføre en studie i det østlige Uganda. Vi vil sammenligne utfallet med og uten SSO og se om denne bruken av olje kan redusere antall babyer som går bort på sykehuset med 25 % de første 28 dagene etter fødselen.
Slik vil det fungere: Vi vil randomisere 1206 spedbarn som veier mindre enn 1500 gram i to grupper. Den ene gruppen vil få SSO-behandlingen tre ganger daglig de første 28 dagene, og den andre vil få regelmessig omsorg. Vi vil holde et øye med dem for å se hvordan de gjør det. Vi vil vite om SSO kan redusere sjansene for alvorlige infeksjoner, hjelpe dem til å vokse, gjøre dem smartere, og viktigst av alt, hjelpe dem å komme seg til første bursdag.
I enklere termer, vi tester om denne enkle oljen kan være en livredder for de minste blant oss, og vårt oppdrag er å finne ut av det.

Background: Approximately 15 million infants are born ‘too soon’ (preterm) every year – over 70% of them in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia. Globally, complications of being born preterm account for the greatest number of deaths in children <5 years. Data suggest that 30% of neonatal deaths occur in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants (<1500g) in SSA and Asia. VLBW infants have immature skin, resulting in water and heat loss, and a risk of pathogens entering. And they are prone to infections, death and impaired growth and neurodevelopment. 
Emollient therapy (topical skin barrier therapy) with sunflower seed oil (SSO) is a potential intervention to reduce infections and improve growth, development and survival. Preliminary studies from South Asia indicate that topical application of emollients, such as SSO, to the skin of VLBW infants may improve outcomes. This has prompted World Health Organization (WHO) to list the following as a priority research question: “What is the effect of emollients on mortality, sepsis, growth, thermo-protection, microbiome, and longer-term neurodevelopment of preterm or LBW infants in high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries, especially in Africa?” We propose to respond to this question by undertaking a randomized controlled trial of this low-cost intervention in eastern Uganda. The trial has been co-created in close collaboration with parents to VLBW infants, representatives of end-users. 
Hypothesis and aim: Emollient therapy with SSO among VLBW infants will reduce in-hospital mortality up to day 28 by 25% compared to infants who receive standard-of-care.
Study design: In a randomized controlled trial, 1206 VLBW neonates will be randomized 1:1 to either intervention or comparator arm. Emollient therapy will be applied 3 times daily while hospitalized up to day 28 after birth. Participants will be compared for incidence of serious bacterial infections, survival, growth, and neurodevelopment and followed up to 1 year

Implement drone-based high spatiotemporal granularity and diagnostic resolution imagery solution coupled with smart PV module monitoring-diagnostic features.
Implement smart control system for PV plants with tracking integrated with real time weather monitoring data.
Develop DT based database including multi-sensory operational, thermal, mechanical and environmental  data with wide publicly available datasets for decision making process on PV plant planning and operation.
Introduce edge AI  for monitoring and yield forecasting and modelling of the entire electricity system including storage supporting plant O&M and automated and predictive PV asset management.
Demonstrate smart PV module with extended monitoring and smart control features integrated with edge AI in different climates and applications including user behaviour.
Evaluate impact of the proposed enhanced digitalisation of PV plant performance in terms of costs/benefits/profitability and increase of PV system reliability, security and flexibility under various topology and operating conditions. 
Disseminate  project achievements to enable further increase of utility-friendly integration of PV generation into the European energy system at high-penetration levels empowered by high digitalisation of PV plant operation.

Superior solar photovoltaic systems for enhanced performance

Heat exchangers (HXs) are the most critical components of a geothermal power plant specially for organic Rankine cycle (ORC) based plant and the capital cost of heat exchanger accounts for a large proportion of ORC, and even reaches about 86% when air cooled condenser is used. Direct heat exchangers (e.g. geothermal brine to district heating) and ORC HXs such as superheater, preheater, evaporator are in direct contact with the geothermal brine, causing scaling and corrosion at different extent based on the thermophysical condition and chemical composition of the geofluid. To handle corrosion, expensive materials are recommended, but due to lower thermal conductivity and degraded performance over time compel to increases the size of the HXs. Hence, improvements in the antiscaling and anticorrosion properties as well as heat transfer performance of the HX material will lead to smaller, more efficient and less costly systems.  GeoHex will rely on the use low cost carbon steel as base material for HX. Through modifying the surface with nano porous coating and controlling the surface chemistry (along with the surface structure), GeoHex will significantly improve the heat transfer performance of single phase and phase change heat transfer process respectively. To attribute the antiscaling and anticorrosion properties, the brine side of the surface will be Ni-P/Ni-P-PTFE duplex coated by electroless method.  GeoHex will significantly reduce the cost of ORC plant while lowering the environmental impact. The technology concept can be exploited to build cost efficient HXs for solar thermal energy, heat pumps, absorption chiller, geothermal energy-based district heating cooling system. GeoHex enabled ORC plant, heat pumps and absorption chiller can be used for waste heat recovery application. Hence, GeoHex will significantly contribute to enhance the energy security, decarbonise the economy, establish the EU leadership on renewables. 

Advanced material for cost-efficient and enhanced heat exchange performance for geothermal application

Rigorous thermodynamic models are crucial to understanding the properties of geofluids, as part of planning for exploration, design and operation of geothermal energy facilities.  However, these models are currently incomplete and do not give accurate enough results for reliable planning; Operators commonly need to carry out empirical, site-specific trials instead, which are costly and occur ‘after the fact’, reducing their effectiveness. The GEOPRO project will produce a set of integrated knowledge based design and operation tools to allow the geothermal industry to explore, design and operate systems more effectively, reducing the LCOE to competitive levels.   To do this, we will firstly generate new experimentally derived datasets to fill gaps in current knowledge of the heat and mass transfer behaviour of complex and highly concentrated fluids under hot and superhot conditions. These will provide next-generation equations of state, which we incorporate into a set of operation and exploration tools. To address these objectives, we have assembled a consortium that combines excellent strength in all areas from the systematic and accurate experimental determination of fluid properties through beyond-industry standard reservoir modeling to process optimization and flow assurance modeling.  Our consortium also contains geothermal industry partners, on whose sites we will verify the accuracy of the toolsets.  We will then incorporate these into open-access knowledge base for use and development across the industry. The geothermal industry will use these new tools to benefit from: the capability to better explore and ‘vector in’ on new resources; the ability to predict the return on a well more reliably for investment decisions; control-oriented simulations to reduce the engineering overkill currently required; improved energy extraction through knowledge of the real production constraints. 

Accurate Geofluid Properties as key to Geothermal Process Optimisation

Future energy systems will face serious operational challenges with system reliability due to fluctuations caused by progressive integration of solar and wind power. Reliable and sustainable energy sources that can be utilized in large parts of Europe and that are able to balance these fluctuations are needed. Geothermal energy has the potential to become an excellent source for both base and flexible energy demands, providing much lower environmental footprint than both fossil and biomass fuels, as well as much less risks and societal resistance than nuclear power.   There are however some techno-economic challenges which needs to be addressed to facilitate highly flexible operation of geothermal power plants. In GeoSmart, we propose to combine thermal energy storages with flexible ORC solutions to provide a highly flexible operational capability of a geothermal installation. During periods with low demand, energy will be stored in the storage to be released at a later stage when the demand is higher. As this approach does not influence the flow condition at the wellhead, critical infrastructures will be unaffected under variable energy generation. To improve efficiency, we also propose a hybrid cooling system for the ORC plant to prevent efficiency degradation due to seasonal variations. Efficiency will be further improved by larger power plant heat extraction enabled due to a scaling reduction system consisting of specially design retention tank, heat exchanger, and recombining with extracted gases. The scaling reduction system has the potential to almost double power production of many medium enthalpy geothermal plants. Overall, GeoSmart technologies will drastically reduce geothermal energy costs, making it cost competitive with its fossil fuel-based counterparts. To bring GeoSmart technology to TRL7/8, we will demonstrate it in a medium/high (Turkey) and low (Belgium) temperature fields to show its potential benefits and applicability in different settings.   

Technologies for geothermal to enhance competitiveness in smart and flexible operation

Development of novel and cost-effective drilling technology for Geothermal Systems

Geothermal is the most under-utilized of renewable sources due to high investment costs and long development cycle. A big part (53%) of the cost is in drilling and it is time-dependent. Geo-Drill aims to reduce drilling cost with increased ROP and reduced tripping with improved tools lives. Geo-Drill is proposing drilling technology incorporating bi-stable fluidic amplifier driven mud hammer, low cost 3D printed sensors & cables, drill monitoring system, Graphene based materials and coatings. Geo-Drill fluidic amplifier driven hammer is less sensitive to issues with mud and tolerances, less impact of erosion on hammer efficiency and it continues to operate with varying mud quality in efficient manner. It is also less affected by the environmental influences such as shocks, vibrations, accelerations, temperature and high pressures. Low cost and robust 3D-printed sensors & cables along the surface of the whole length of the drill string provides real-time high bandwidth data during drilling; e.g. estimation of rock formation hardness, mud flow speed, density, temp, etc. Flow assurance simulations combined with sensor readings and knowledge-based system will assist in optimizing drilling parameters and cuttings transport performance and safety conditions. Graphene's ability to tune the particular form lends itself uniquely as a component in a wide variety of matrices for coating developments with enhanced adhesion and dispersion properties and improved resistance to abrasion, erosion, corrosion and impact. Placing few mm hard-strength materials on drill bit, drill stabilizer through diffusion bonding improves their wear resistance and improve the lifetime. Geo-Drill's hammers improved efficiency and lifetime, drill parameter optimisation and CTP via sensors, reduced time in replacing tools with improved lifetime work together to improve ROP & lifetime resulting in reduced drilling time. Thereby, Geo-Drill will reduce drilling cost by 29-60%.

WeldGalaxy project will deliver, a B2B online Platform that brings together global buyers (end-users/OEM) and EU sellers (manufacturers/suppliers/distributors/service providers) of welding equipment along with auxiliaries/consumables and services, thereby enhancing the visibility of EU’s welding products/prototypes/services to global users (via digital marketing strategies) and providing innovative web-based services (e.g. equipment selection and inventory management, digital design/testing of equipment capabilities) to boost EU market share and competitiveness. The digital platform will incorporate Knowledge base engineering (KBE) tool that streamlines equipment selection process for end-users and allows ‘plug and produce’ digital manufacturing of the right equipment to specified customers’/end-users’ requirements and regulatory compliance.  Though the full capability of the WeldGalaxy platform including associated product services (including the services from all third parties) will be demonstrated in welding equipment (along with auxiliaries) and consumables manufacturing domain, yet, the conceptual and functional framework of WeldGalaxy technology concept can be used in any industrial domain related to manufacturing.  The Dynamic Knowledge Management based B2B platform will be designed by following the standard 3-tier architecture. Scalability and reliability will be assured by the use of: RESTfull architecture for API layer, cloud-based backend platform hosted on mainstream cloud providers like AWS or Google Cloud Platform who offer clustering, loading balancing, caching to support scalability and redundant data backup to ensure reliability. Use of blockchain/Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) will make the platform inherently stable, highly scalable and always up. The digital platform, supported by integrated blockchain/DLT for improved reliability/visibility/ transparency/ security of transactions, will enhance the competitiveness of EU manufacturing sec

Digital Dynamic Knowledge Platform for Welding in Manufacturing Industries

The Geo-coat project has been specified as necessary by our geothermal power and equipment manufacturing members, who, in order to reliably provide energy, need to improve plant capability to withstand corrosion, erosion and scaling from geofluids, to maintain the equipment up-time and generation efficiency.  Additionally they need to be able to produce better geothermal power plant equipment protection design concepts through virtual prototyping to meet the increasing requirements for life cycle costs, environmental impacts and end-of-life considerations.    Current materials, transferred from oil and gas applications to these exceptionally harsh environments, (and the corresponding design models) are not capable of performing, leading to constant need to inspect and repair damage.  The Geo-coat project will develop new resistant materials in the form of high performance coatings of novel targeted "High Entropy Alloys" and Cermets, thermally applied to the key specified vulnerable process stages (components in turbines, valves, pumps, heat exchangers and pipe bends) in response to the specific corrosion and erosion forces we find at each point.  We will also capture the underlying principles of the material resistance, to proactively design the equipment for performance while minimising overall capex costs from these expensive materials.   The Geo-coat consortium has user members from geothermal plant operations and equipment manufacture to ensure the project's focus on real-world issues, coupled with world-leading experience in the development of materials, protective coatings and their application to harsh environments.  In addition to developing the new coating materials and techniques, we also aim to transfer our experiences from the development of Flow Assurance schemes for Oil&Gas and Chemical industries to provide a new overarching set of design paradigms and generate an underpinning Knowledge Based System.  

Development of novel and cost effective corrosion resistant coatings for high temperature geothermal applications

The ISOBIO project will develop a new approach to insulating materials through the novel combination of existing bio-derived aggregates with low embodied carbon with innovative binders to produce durable composite construction materials. These novel composites will target 50% lower embodied energy and carbon than traditional oil based insulation panels, and will increase thermal insulation compared with traditional systems by at least 20%. By using bio-based materials, using vertical integration from raw material production through to finished systems, the ISOBIO project aims to reduce costs by at least 15% over traditional systems. The use of bio-based materials ensures that whole life energy use is reduced through taking advantage of the photosynthesis of atmospheric carbon which is sequestered in the fabric of the building for its lifetime. The ISOBIO materials take advantage of the natural moisture sorption/desorption characteristics of bio-based materials, which is known to passively manage the indoor environment resulting in greatly improved indoor air and environmental quality, whilst at the same time reducing the demand for air conditioning.
