Genredigering er den nye generasjonen av genmodifiseringsteknikker som kan anvendes på mat gjennom produksjon av planter, dyr og mikroorganismer med ønskede agronomiske egenskaper. Nano4CRISPR går fra en «transgen laboratorietilnærming» til en «på stedet tilnærming» hvor komponentene for genredigering vil bli anvendt direkte i åkeren for å modifisere planter, skadedyr og andre organismer. 
Hovedformålet til Nano4CRISPR er å utvikle, teste og risikovurdere en innovativ plattform der nanopartikler og CRISPR-konjugater utvikles for bruk til fremtidig genredigering av produkter. Denne plattformen er unik i sin kombinasjon av nano- og genteknologi og er derfor velegnet til bruk i den banebrytende teknologien som skal benyttes for transport av nanoCRISPR-konjugater og representerer en signifikant fordel over de eksisterende metodene for genteknologi. Målrettet design av nanopartikler vil muliggjøre utviklingen av nanoCRISPR-konjugater som kan trenge gjennom plantecellenes rigide cellevegger og membraner for å oppnå genredigering av hele planter ute i en åker, uten å benytte kompliserte, lange og arbeidskrevende genteknologiske prosesser. Denne tilnærmingen vil også være aktuell innenfor andre felt, slik som akvakultur, skadedyrkontroll og økologiske bevaringsformål.
I tillegg til å utvikle nye nanoCRISPR-konjugater, vil vi også sette søkelys på risikovurdering og undersøke uønsket bruk/misbruk ved hjelp av en RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) basert tilnærming. Vi vil også se nærmere på mulighetene for industriell produksjon og skalering av nanoCRISPR-konjugater, med den hensikt å forbedre underliggende risikovurderinger samt rammeverket innenfor vurderingen av samfunnsnytte, etikk og miljø som er relevante for genmodifiserte organismer. Interessenter fra akademia, industri, statlige etater og sivile samfunnsorganisasjoner i Norge og andre Europeiske land, vil delta aktivt sammen med oss i en samordnet prosess som vil gi en høy sosial relevans og tillit.

Nano4CRISPR will generate knowledge on nanoparticles based CRISPR delivery products that can be applied externally to crops in the open field for both agricultural and environmental purposes. The project aims to contribute to the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable food production following a Responsible Research and Innovation co-creation platform. NanoCRISPR conjugates have the potential to contribute to reducing the use of harmful chemistries that create persistent agrochemical pollution and to increasing resilience and suitability of our food system. The main goal of Nano4CRISPR is to develop, test and risk assess an integrated platform for the development of personalized nanoCRISPR conjugates for use in future gene-editing products directly in the field or at point of scale.  Rational nanoparticle design will enable the development of nanoCRISPR conjugates that can overcome membranes and rigid cell walls surrounding plant cells and enable gene-editing in whole plants, in the field, without the aid of complicated, long and laborious genetic engineering processes. Hence, the approach is also suitable for other field applications, such as in aquaculture, pest control, and ecological conservation purposes. The integrated gene-editing platform comprehends a holistic risk assessment approach including the investigation of unintended and malicious use. Stakeholders from academia, industry, governmental agencies, and civil society organizations in Norway and other European countries will actively participate with us in a co-creation process that delivers high societal relevance and trust.

Nano4CRISPR: Novel nanocarrier reagents for environmental delivery of CRISPR/Cas

De to vanligste formene for Inflammatorisk tarmsykdom (IBD), Ulcerøs colitt (UC) og Crohns sykdom (CD) er livslange, kroniske sykdommer som ofte diagnostiseres i ung alder.  En etablert hypotese er at IBD skyldes en kompleks kombinasjon av arv, mikrobiota, immunresponser og miljøfaktorer. Det er stor variasjon i symptomer, sykdomsforløp og effekten av medisiner hos IBD-pasienter. Legemidler som brukes ved IBD varierer derfor fra klassiske betennelsesdempende midler til antistoffer og små molekyler som mer målrettet påvirker deler av immunsystemet. Men, ikke alle IBD pasienter responderer på behandling, og ingen av legemidlene som brukes kan kurere IBD. I dag er målet med behandling å redusere betennelsen, gi lindring av symptomer og forhindre tilbakefall. Fordi UC og CD manifesterer seg som betennelsessykdommer, har det meste av IBD-forskningen konsentrert seg om immunceller. Epitelcellene i tarmen har sannsynligvis langt større direkte betydning for sykdomsutvikling og respons på behandling enn tidligere antatt. Fremdeles er det nesten ingen av medisinene som brukes i IBD-behandling som er direkte rettet mot funksjoner i tramepitelet. Videre vet vi ikke om legemidler som er utviklet for å påvirke immunceller har negative eller positive effekter på epitelfunksjoner. I dette prosjektet bruker vi avansert organoid-teknologi til å undersøke hvordan forskjellige medikamenter som brukes ved IBD-behandling virker på epitelceller. Organoider fra tarmbiopsier («mini-guts») er pasientens egne tarmepitelceller som videreføres i kultur over tid (kolonoider fra tykktarm og enteroider fra tynntarm). Slike 3D ex vivo modeller er nærmere faktisk sykdomsbiologi enn dyremodeller og kreftcellelinjer som har vært brukt tidligere i IBD forskning. I dette prosjektet vil vi også bruke «mini-guts» for å teste for mer effektive medikamentregimer eller screene for nye terapier i IBD-pasienters egne celler. Målet med prosjektet er å bidra til utvikling av persontilpasset IBD-behandling.

We hypothesize that intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are significantly more central in gut inflammation than previously acknowledged and challenge the view that immune cells should be the main target for treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Every IBD patient presents with a unique disease and treatment history, and their own hereditary and environmental backdrop. This IBD cohort heterogeneity can only be captured through combinatory analyses of clinical information and laboratory results from real-life biological material or patient-derived ex vivo models faithfully reproducing the heterogeneity. Therefore, the proposed project has a genuine translational approach focusing on systematic clinical observations in parallel with research on patient specific epithelial organoids (“mini-guts”) that can reproduce patient heterogeneity. We will perform state-of the art functional studies and evaluate approved and investigational IBD-drugs as treatment options targeting observed physical, biochemical, and immunological intestinal epithelial dysfunctions. Since research into IBD pathobiology has mainly focused on immune cell-mediated mechanisms there is very limited information about how the drugs commonly used in IBD affect epithelial functions in health and disease. The American Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (ACCF) recently highlighted that “understanding the essential role of the intestinal epithelium in IBD is paramount, particularly since mucosa healing has become major endpoint in clinical management of patients”. The present project will directly answer important questions regarding IEC biology and meet challenges as stated by ACCF. The ambition for the project is to bring forward detailed mechanistic knowledge about the role of IECs in IBD that can facilitate precision medicine.

Intestinal epithelial cells: Central coordinators in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and targets for treatment

Arrhythmical Risk Indicator (ARI) – cardiovascular images to reduce the need of pacemakers

ForestFeed skal utvikle bærekraftige mikrobielle fôringredienser av høy kvalitet (MI; mycoprotein) i fôr til laks ved å oppsirkulere sidestrømmer fra skogbruk ved hjelp av avansert bioteknologi, og dermed bidra til en sirkulær økonomi, styrke matsikkerheten og redusere klimaendringene. Prosjektet inkluderer partnere med kompetanse langs hele verdikjeden fra skogsråstoff til de endelige fiskeproduktene. MI og MI-produktene som blir utviklet vil bli brukt i funksjonelle fôr for å styrke immunforsvaret, helse, sykdomsresistens og dermed øke velferden hos fisk. Det lokalt produserte MI vil også redusere miljøpåvirkningen fra oppdrettsnæringen, øke produktiviteten, redusere kostnader og øke forbrukernes tillit til de endelige fiskeproduktene.  Nye bioprosess teknologier vil bli utviklet for behandling av sidestrømmer fra skogbruket som bærekraftige innsatsfaktorer for produksjon av MI. De mest lovende prosessene og råstoffet vil så bli brukt til å oppskalere MI-produksjonen. Nye bioaktive produkter vil bli isolert fra MI, karakterisert og evaluert for bioaktivitet i cellekulturstudier med immunceller fra laks, der de mest lovende produktene vil bli brukt i funksjonelle fôr. Næringsverdi, vekst og helseeffekter av MI- og MI-produktene vil bli validert i forsøk med regnbueørret og atlantisk laks med bruk av moderne verktøy (tarmfysiologi, histopatologi, transkriptomikk og proteomikk). En risikoprofil for prosessen og råstoffet vil bli utviklet, og miljømessig livssyklusvurdering (E-LCA), liv sykluskostnadsvurdering (LCC) av det optimaliserte akvakultursystemet, og tekno-økonomisk analyse av prosessen vil bli utført. Samlet sett vil ForestFeed skape sterke nye, tverrfaglige forsknings- og innovasjonsgrupper fra Norge, Finland, Sverige, Tyskland og Canada for å legge til rette for en skogbasert bioøkonomi og redusere klimaendringene i Norden.

ForestFeed will develop sustainable high-quality microbial feed ingredients (MI; mycoprotein) for farmed salmonids by up-cycling forestry waste streams by advanced biotechnology, thus facilitating a circular economy, strengthening food security and mitigating climate change. The project includes partners with complementary expertise along the value chain from primary forestry by-products to the final fish products. The MI and derived products will be used in functional feeds to improve immunological function, health, disease resistance and welfare of fish. The locally produced MI will also reduce the environmental impact of the aquaculture industry, benefiting productivity, costs and consumer confidence in the final fish products. 

Novel bioprocessing technologies will be developed to exploit side streams from forest biomass processing as a sustainable feedstock to produce the MI. Most promising processes and feedstock will be used to upscale MI production. Novel bioactive products will be isolated from the MI, characterized, and evaluated for bioactivity in salmon immune cell culture studies, where the most promising products will be used in functional feeds. Nutritional value, growth performance and health effects of the MI and MI products will be validated in trials with rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon with state-of-the-art tools (gut physiology, histopathology, transcriptomics and proteomics). A risk profile of the process and feedstocks will be developed, and environmental life cycle assessment (E-LCA), life cycle costing (LCC) assessment of the optimized aquaculture system, and techno-economic analysis of the process will be performed. Overall, ForestFeed will create strong novel, interdisciplinary research and innovation groups from Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Canada to facilitate a forest-based bioeconomy and mitigate climate change in the Nordic region.

Bioeconomy in the North -ForestFeed - A Nordic blue-green value chain from forest to fish filet

Den geopolitiske situasjonen i Europa endret seg dramatisk med Russlands invasjon av Ukraina, og forårsaket umiddelbart bekymring for sikkerheten til europeisk energiinfrastruktur. Etter sabotasjen mot Nord Stream-rørledningene og observasjoner av uidentifiserte droner rundt norske olje- og gassinstallasjoner til havs, har det blitt et mål å sikre sikkerheten til petroleumsinfrastruktur. En rekke internasjonale, statlige og bedriftsaktører må nå samarbeide for å koordinere innsatsen for å sikre kritisk petroleumsinfrastruktur.

Koordinering og samarbeid mellom vidt forskjellige aktører rundt felles problemer viser seg ofte å være utfordrende. INTERSECT utforsker hvordan det institusjonelle miljøet rundt petroleumsinfrastrukturen kan samarbeide om sikkerhetsstyring. Til grunn for prosjektet ligger antakelsen om at tilstrekkelig sikkerhetsstyring må omfatte flere styringsnivå og en rekke aktører. INTERSECT analyserer utfordringer og muligheter for sikkerhetsstyring mellom flere analysenivå; internasjonalt nivå, nasjonalt nivå, og sektor- og industrinivå. Prosjektet vil her studere samspillet og samarbeidet mellom aktører på ulike nivå, inkludert NATO, norske statlige institusjoner, tilsynsmyndigheter og petroleumsselskaper. Fokus vil ligge på å identifisere og overvinne samarbeidsbarrierer.

Staten er ansvarlig for nasjonal sikkerhet, men selskaper eier petroleumsinfrastrukturen. Ved analyse av industrinivået er bedriftsinterne forhold og tilpasningsevne sentralt. Petroleumsselskapene er rettet mot sikkerhet (safety), ikke først og fremst sikring (security), og de nye omstendighetene tvinger selskapene til å rette mer oppmerksomhet mot "security". INTERSECT utforsker bedriftsinterne løsninger i samarbeid med nøkkelbedrifter i norsk sektor, og analyserer også bedrifters roller i sikkerhetspolitikken kritisk.

INTERSECT er et tverrfaglig samfunnsvitenskapelig prosjekt som bygger på disiplinene statsvitenskap, organisasjonssosiologi og samfunnssikkerhet.

The geopolitical situation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put a premium on the security of petroleum infrastructures. The changed geopolitical context represents a sudden and significant shift in the framework conditions for the petroleum sector's risk governance model. The shift involves 1) a more influential international dimension in the petroleum sector’s risk governance, and 2) changes in the intersections between safety and security, at different societal levels. These shifts, and how to deal with them, are the points of departure for INTERSECT.

The stronger international dimension involves a new regulatory and supervisory landscape where state security regulations (the Security Act) enter a field where risk governance has traditionally been based on strong sectoral-industrial risk regulation. The new geopolitical situation, and the corresponding changes in the regulatory framework conditions, challenge the sector’s institutional logic and the division of labour between safety and security regulators and supervisory agencies. Changes in power structures, roles and responsibilities emerge, and trigger a need for coordination and collaboration to be able to align matters of safety and security into comprehensive risk governance. The changes also challenge companies’ structures, cultures and practices for risk management.

INTERSECT responds to an industrial and societal need to detect and understand the conditions for constructing adequate security risk governance around petroleum infrastructure. Assuming that adequate security governance must be multi-level and multi-actor, INTERSECT studies coordination and collaboration between actors at different governance levels, from the international, through the state to the company level. INTERSECT explores challenges and opportunities for security governance, seeking to identify and overcome collaborative barriers, including the alignment and collaboration between safety and security professionals.

New geopolitics and the interaction between safety and security in petroleum risk governance

Epoksyresiner er en gruppe kjemikalier med bred bruk i bygg- og beleggapplikasjoner. Selv om de allerede bidrar til bærekraft ved å beskytte og utvide levetiden til blant annet offshoreinstallasjoner, skip, biler, fly og husholdningsapparater, er de nesten utelukkende laget fra fossile ressurser og basert på giftige forbindelser som kan utgjøre en trussel mot miljøet og helse. Mer bærekraftige og tryggere alternativer til konvensjonell epoksy med lignende ytelse som deres originale motparter er derfor etterspurt.
Samarbeidsprosjektet NordiCoats adresserer behovet for en grønn omstilling i kjemikalie- og materialsektoren ved å utvikle mer bærekraftige epoksybindemidler ved en unik kombinasjon av bioteknologi, nanoteknologi og kjemiske syntesemetoder, som fører til nye trygge og bærekraftige biobaserte epoksyforbindelser og resiner med unike egenskaper, mulig resirkulerbarhet, og redusert energiforbruk. De beste nye epoksyresinene vil bli vurdert som bindemidler i høyytelsesbelegg for den maritime sektoren.
NordiCoats implementeres av et konsortium av fire forskningspartnere i aktivt samarbeid med fire industrielle partnere, som med sin komplementære kompetanse og bidrag til prosjektet vil bane vei for nye, mer bærekraftige epoksyprodukter for en mengde ulike bruksområder og markeder.

Epoxy resins represent a highly developed group of chemicals with a broad use in building and coating applications. Although they in high-performance coatings already contribute to sustainability, e.g., by protecting and expanding lifetime of offshore installations, ships, cars, aircraft, and household appliances, etc., they are almost exclusively derived from fossil resources and based on toxic compounds that can pose a threat to the environment and health. More sustainable and safer alternatives to conventional epoxy with similar performances as their original counterparts are therefore in high demand.
The collaborative project NordiCoats addresses the need for a green transition in the chemicals and materials sector by assembling an innovative platform for the development of more sustainable epoxy binders by a highly interdisciplinary approach. Advanced biotechnology methods are applied to produce microbial oils and biopolymers from lignocellulosic sugars, and biorefinery by-products are sourced and upgraded to assemble a set of base compounds for subsequent upgrading. The base compounds are chemically and/or enzymatically activated and combined with advanced nanotechnology, in order to generate new bio-based epoxy compounds and resins with unique properties, possible recyclability, and reduced energy consumption. These new epoxies are then subjected to functional tests, accompanied by safety, environmental, and economic assessments, providing feedback for further material improvement in the project. Ultimately, the best new epoxy resins will be evaluated as binder additives or substitutes in high-performance coatings for the maritime sector. 
NordiCoats is implemented by a consortium of four research partners in active collaboration with four industrial partners, who with their complementary competences and contributions along the entire value chain will pave the way for new, more sustainable epoxy products for a plethora of different applications and markets.

New bio-based epoxy compounds for high performance applications  (NordiCoats)

Norge har et stort antall områder med viltfare langs veier hvor det ikke er kostnadseffektivt å bygge store gjerder eller viltkryssinger. Tilstedeværelsen av dyreliv langs åpne veier kan forårsake trafikkkollisjoner med dyreliv, skape stress og skape farlige situasjoner for sikkerheten til både mennesker og dyr. Alvorlighetsgraden av situasjonen er synlig i antall kollisjoner med hjortevilt. Til tross for forsøk på ulike løsninger har disse hatt liten suksess og antall trafikkpåkjørsler med dyreliv har økt med rundt 50 % de siste 5-10 årene. WILDETECT har som mål å samle inn både eksisterende og nye data for å bygge kunnskap om hvor sannsynligheten for kollisjonsulykker er høyest, for å varsle trafikanter og redusere antall trafikkulykker med dyreliv. Prosjektet skal utforske ulike løsninger som samler inn data om antall og/eller bevegelse av viltgrupper, som: 1) statistiske data, 2) sensordata og videoobservasjoner med droner, og 3) ustrukturerte data fra trafikantene, for eksempel. sosiale medier. I tillegg vil det bli utforsket hvordan man kan bringe data sammen (datafusjon), for å bygge kunnskap om hvilken type data man skal kombinere og hvordan man kan forbedre statistiske modeller for å forutsi kollisjoner. Kunnskapen som genereres i WILDETECT skal også brukes til å teste ulike varslingssystemer, alt fra mobilapplikasjoner til skilt med variabel hastighet som aktiveres når risikoen er høy. Disse varslingssystemene vil bli evaluert av sjåfører. For å teste ulike varslingsløsninger, vil WILDETECT benytte seg av Virtual Reality (VR) og en kjøresimulator for mer effektivt å evaluere sjåførenes adferd når det varsles om risikoen. WILDETECT vil også inkludere aktører involvert i transportsystemet, inkludert de som mottar data, varsler, og trafikantene. Dette vil tillate samskapingsprosesser, hvor bidrag fra interessenter og brukere vil bli vurdert for å definere hvilken type data som kan inkluderes i en løsning.

WILDETECT explores and extends various statistical and technical solutions in investigating the integration potential of data and technology in answer to traffic collision avoidance between vehicles and animals. The project aims to develop knowledge-based outcomes for the development of a safe and smart traffic system that can detect wildlife and warn road authorities and drivers of increased collision risk. The project results will be a starting point for developing future technology systems that can be applicable to traffic planning, providing road users with real and dynamic traffic information, thus contributing to increased transport safety.

Exploring preconditions for an integrated safe and smart traffic environment system - for Wildlife collision avoidance.

The aim of this project is to assess, control, and manage thermal storage potentials and flexibility at both building and district level to enable the complete renewable, smart, resource, and cost-efficient energy systems. Current district heating (DH) systems and existing buildings are huge free assets to store thermal energy and thereby enable bigger flexibility of the entire energy system. The flexibility can be used to make the heating system more resource efficient, and thereby economical and environmentally friendly. To scale up the proposed solutions, the project approaches will be tested on three case studies and several synthetic studies built on the real-time long-term measurements. The project concept is based on a unique smart control idea to optimize at the same time the demand side based on the variable energy prices and the supply side based on the resulting demand prediction and thereby to use renewables in resource efficient way for heating and cooling purpose. To fully utilize all possibilities for flexibility in energy systems, with the increasing deployment of electric vehicle (EV) and photovoltaic (PV) deployment in the residential sector, this project will also evaluate how EVs and PVs can be optimally coupled with DH (e.g., via heat pumps), as well as their potentials in balancing the demand and supply in both heating and electricity sector.
TRAINING will provide solutions to achieve a resource-efficient and sustainable distribution, storage, and utilization of heating and cooling. It also considers the coupling of the heating sector with other sectors and thereby increasing flexibility, resource-efficiency, and climate-neutrality. Further, TRAINING will also strongly focus on utilization of digital and smart technologies in buildings and DH systems.
TRAINING is a joint effort among partners from academy, research, and industry. Partners from Sweden, Germany, and Norway are involved in the project.

The aim of this project is to assess, control, and manage thermal storage potentials and flexibility at both building and district level to enable the complete renewable, smart, resource, and cost-efficient energy systems. Current district heating (DH) systems and existing buildings are huge free assets to store thermal energy and thereby enable bigger flexibility of the entire energy system. The flexibility can be used to make the heating system more resource efficient, and thereby economical and environmentally friendly. To scale up the proposed solutions, the project approaches will be tested on three case studies and several synthetic studies built on the real-time long-term measurements. The project concept is based on a unique smart control idea to optimize at the same time the demand side based on the variable energy prices and the supply side based on the resulting demand prediction and thereby to use renewables in resource efficient way for heating and cooling purpose. Thermal energy storing and digitalization in district heating to enable transition to renewable and resource efficient energy systems

Målet med prosjektet er å utvikle en ny fangstteknologi for lave CO2-konsentrasjoner fra luft og lave industrielle CO2-utslipp. Hovedutfordringene med lavkonsentrasjon CO2-fangst er høye kostnader og at de vanlige industrielle metodene ikke er energieffektive nok. På grunn av dette er det for tiden ingen fangstteknologi tilgjengelig for industrier med lave CO2-konsentrasjoner i avgassen, selv om den kumulative effekten av disse er betydelig. For å nå klimamålene, må teknologier for fangst av lavkonsentrasjon CO2, inkludert både fangst fra luft og fra industrier med lave CO2-konsentrasjoner i avgassen, implementeres i stor skala. Derfor trengs det videreutvikling av nye metoder, og vi mener å klare dette ved å benytte porøse- og funksjonaliserte faste stoffer (sorbenter) som reagerer med, og dermed fanger CO2 molekyler. For å få en kontinuerlig fangstprosess må stoffene regenereres for å brukes igjen etter at det er fylt med CO2. Siden det er store volum av gasser som må renses vil vi lage såkalte strukturerte enheter som igjen er bygget opp av ovennevnte utviklede materialer. De strukturerte enhetene har stor overflate og stor mekanisk styrke. De lages som moduler og kan derfor settes sammen som klosser til man oppnår ønsket størrelse på fangstanlegget. Ved å bruke slike strukturerte enheter vil man få en mer effektiv prosess. Når gode strukturerte enheter er fremstilt og testet på lab-skala vil vi utvikle en modell på en til to prosesser som inkluderer disse enhetenes karakteristikker. Modellene vil kunne gi oss svar på om prosessenes energieffektivitet og driftsøkonomi. Etter å ha valgt den mest optimale prosessen skal vi bygge et større testanlegg (såkalt pilotskala) for mer industrilike testbetingelser. Dette siste er viktig for å kunne oppskalere til effektive, store anlegg, med fangst av CO2 i milliontonn skala.

The overall objective of SENSATION is to develop a sorbent-based carbon capture technology tailored for low CO2 concentrations varying from 400 ppm in air (Direct Air Capture, DAC, application) to 1-3 vol% for industrial sources. This will be achieved by 1) Validating scalable, commercially available sorbent materials that have high capacity and selectivity at low concentrations of CO2 and have a long-term stability; 2) Structuring sorbents by coating the sorbent material onto a substrate monolith. This includes selection of a substrate and a coating process of the sorbent to maximize bed density while lowering the pressure drop and thereby reducing the cycle time; 3) Designing a compact system with optimized temperature swing adsorption (TSA) and vacuum temperature swing adsorption (VTSA) processes to reduce energy and capital costs; 4) Techno-economic analysis to link the experimental development to large-scale design; 5) TRL6 demonstration of the developed technology at two industrial locations to test carbon capture both at very low (from air; via DAC) and low CO2 concentrations (from industrial off gas). Lessons learned during the operation will be used for implementation at scale; 6) Life cycle assessment to identify which key indicators need to be addressed to limit the environmental impacts of the technology, and to assess social impacts; 7) Exploitation, including activities on commercialization and scalability, yielding a roadmap for commercial deployment by 2030.

Protecting the aquatic environment from urban runoff pollution

Major progress has been achieved in protecting European freshwaters through the successful implementation of urban wastewater treatment infrastructures but significant pressures still pose threats to the quality of the receiving water bodies. The recent evaluation of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive underlined that, in particular stormwater overflows including urban surface run-off and combined sewer overflows bring relevant pollutant loads into the aquatic environment. The pressure on water resources from those kinds of emissions is expected to aggravate through the impacts of global climate change with more frequent intense precipitation as well as more pronounced drought conditions. To address those challenges new ways in effectively mitigating pollution arising from urban run-off and sewer overflows are needed, providing effective load reduction, in a way affordable as well as acceptable to end-users and the society. The StopUP project will elucidate pollution pathways in urban catchments to enable targeted interventions through measures at source, retention and treatment. It will foster knowledge about emissions incl. pollutant release, transport and receiving water bodies through advanced monitoring concepts, online sensors and data processing and analysis. In the context of different case studies, innovative technologies for pollution prevention such as advanced retention soil filters for combined sewer overflow treatment which can be integrated better in urban areas will be further developed and tested. The tests will demonstrate integrated solutions including monitoring, treatment and control of diffusive pollution in different contexts concerning geographic, climatic and hydrological as well as socio-economic settings. Based on the findings, tools to support selection, implementation and operation of pollutant mitigation measures for end-users including environmental authorities, water boards/utilities, consultancies will be derived.

Geothermal energy is one of the best sources of clean energy on earth and extensive use of natural gas (instead of petroleum) can reduce carbon emission a lot. Also a success in CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) activities will lead toward a cleaner enviro nment. While for geothermal installation and gas production we need to drill through hard and hot porous rock, enormous amount of CO2 can be injected in empty underground reservoirs for long term storage. During fluid injection in such scenarios cracks op en up and existing fractures grow in porous reservoirs due to fluid pressure and stress imbalance and sometimes growth of fractures results in leakage or well-collapse, which are major safety issues. It is important therefore to be able to predict fractur e and flow behavior in disordered porous media. We propose to combine discrete particle modelling (pore scale), stochastic modelling (mesoscopic scale) and discrete element modelling (reservoir scale) in order to monitor and study fracture propagation and  fluid flow phenomena in porous media. The findings from these simulations will be calibrated against controlled laboratory experiments on core samples and artificial systems.  The main goal of this project is to achieve control on the fracturing process  and fluid flow dynamics in porous media through increasing our fundamental knowledge of these processes - which can in turn improve the safety as well as efficiency of operations during drilling and fluid injection. Geothermal energy and CCS have substant ial potentials both in Norway and India, and an additional benefit of the project results is increased production of hydrocarbons. This project has been developed from the ongoing research collaboration (Appendix 1) between Norwegian and Indian institutio ns through INDNOR preproject 2011 funded by The Research Council of Norway (grant no 205101/H30).

India -  Fracture and Flow in Porous Media: Application in geothermal installation, hydrocarbon production and CO2 storage

In this INDNOR pre-project we develop networks (between India & Norway) & necessary competence to work on a big research project in near future - which will be complementary to the ongoing SINTEF-NTNU activities in BIGCCS project.
Safe storage of CO2 is a  big issue now and natural underground reservoirs are considered as good candidates for such purpose. However during fluid injection in the porous reservoirs (for CO2 storage or petroleum production) cracks open up and existing fractures grow in time due  to fluid pressure and stress imbalance and sometimes growth of fractures results in leakage or well-collapse, which are major safety issues. It is important therefore to be able to predict how and where fractures will grow in disordered porous media. Mode lling of fracture initiation and growth is often based on linear elastic fracture mechanics, with resulting predictions that fail to reproduce reality. One of the reasons for the mismatch may be that the microscopic aspect of the fracture initiation proce ss is neglected, that the true elasto-plastic behaviour of the rock is not accounted for.  We propose to combine discrete particle modelling (using PFC - Particle Flow Code) on the pore level with stochastic modelling on a mesoscopic level in order to obt ain acoustic data which can be used to monitor micro-crack opening & fracture propagation. The findings from these simulations will be calibrated against controlled laboratory experiments with Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring.  The final goal is to achie ve improved control of the fracturing process (crack opening & fracture propagation) during fluid injection in disordered porous media - which can in turn  enhance the safety level for CO2 storage and petroleum production. 
The main activities of this pre -project will be scientific visits, scholar exchange, guiding master students, supporting workshops etc. as a part of developing networks and competence. Some preliminary results will be produced from model studies.
