Co-benefits and synergies between biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation from a social-ecological systems perspective

CoBioPovCli addresses the question of how to conserve biodiversity, alleviate poverty, and mitigate climate change simultaneously, which are interrelated challenges that threaten human and environmental well-being. The importance of this topic is highlighted by the current context of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, which have exacerbated these problems and their impacts on human and environmental well-being. The main gaps in this topic are: (1) lack of comprehensive data, especially on the dynamics of socio-ecological systems, (2) lack of integrated knowledge, and (3) lack of holistic approaches that consider co-benefits and synergies. CoBioPovCli aims to overcome the limitations and gaps in the current state-of-the-art by developing an integrated spatial planning approach that can achieve win-win synergies between biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation, and climate change mitigation from a social-ecological systems perspective.  CoBioPovCli will use literature, models remote sensing data, and other data sources to construct and apply the spatial planning approach, based on case studies, spatial analysis and scenario simulation. CoBioPovCli will generate new knowledge, data and solutions that are conceptually novel, scientifically rigorous and policy-relevant. It will enhance our understanding of the multiple values of biodiversity and its contributions to human well-being under changing climatic conditions. It will provide evidence-based recommendations and best practices for promoting more integrated and sustainable approaches that benefit both people and the planet. CoBioPovCli will also enhance Europe’s scientific and technical capacity and excellence in the field of co-benefits and synergies between biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation, and climate change mitigation, as well as contribute to Europe’s global leadership and influence in addressing these interlinked challenges.

I en tid med historisk og fremtidig oppvarming av kloden trenger vi modeller som kan predikere de fremtidige økologiske konsekvensene. For marine system består disse modellene ofte av en global klimamodell knyttet til ulike temperaturdrevne funksjoner som representerer biologiske og fysiologiske effekter. De fleste slike funksjoner er svært generelle og ofte basert på gjennomsnittsverdier på tvers av arter og system. Det er derfor sannsynlig at prediksjonene blir feil for en enkelt art eller region. Dessverre vet vi lite om hvor vanlige slike feil er, ettersom modellene nesten utelukkende brukes til å predikere fremtiden, og så godt som aldri fortiden.
I denne søknaden plukker vi ut sentrale modell-forventninger og skalerer dem ned til det regionale miljøet for ulike fiskebestander i norske farvann. Forventningene testes og analyseres ved hjelp av eksepsjonelt lange tidsserier, fysiologiske eksperiment og mekanistiske modeller for bioenergetikk og livshistorie.
Foreløpige resultater peker mot at flere fiskearter er mer fleksible, både fysiologisk og adferdsmessig, enn generelle modeller klarer å fange opp. Disse og fremtidige prosjektresultater vil bidra til å lage bedre prediksjoner, og forhåpentligvis også utvide forståelsen vår om hvordan temperatur virker og ikke virker på ulike biologiske prosesser.

In the face of global warming, state-of-the-art eco-physiological theories and their implementation in global models make sweeping predictions that high-latitude fish populations are imperilled from unavoidable physical-physiological mechanisms. These are often rooted in reproductive constraints, and at the base we find two main theories: 

1) The theory of thermal tolerance windows, predicting that spawning fish (with narrow tolerance) will encounter unavoidable thermal bottlenecks in a warming ocean. 
2) The theory of temperature-dependent physiological rates, predicting an unfavourable advancement of fish spawning time, causing offspring to fall out of sync with their zooplankton food – known as trophic asynchrony 

These are predictions, often drawn from controlled laboratory experiments, and in turn extrapolated to global models. But just as downscaling to regional specificities and higher resolution was necessary to improve predictive ability of earth system models, so a similar biological downscaling to particular ecosystems and species is required to assess predictions at the scale relevant for population processes and ecosystem dymanics.

In this project we will downscale these predictive theories for two test species - Atlantic cod and herring, among the best documented fish stocks in the world. Our previous publications and preliminary findings suggest that these species have remarkable plasticity in the timing of spawning, often opposite to that dictated by temperature, and in surprising synchrony with each other and with lower trophic levels.

Here, we pick key expectations from the high-profile literature on biological effects of ocean change and attempt to downscale these to local conditions for key high-latitude fish species using particularly long and detailed timeseries of biological data, remote sensing, high-resolution water column processes, individual behavioural observations, and biological models of bioenergetics and life histories.

Mining Impact-prosjektet ble valgt ut som en del av den tredje fasen av den vellykkede JPI Oceans Joint Action om de økologiske aspektene ved dyphavsgruvedrift. Forskningskonsortiet samler eksperter fra Belgia, Danmark, Tyskland, Italia, Nederland, Norge, Polen, Portugal og Storbritannia. Med et totalbudsjett på ca. € 9 millioner (hvorav ca. € 5,7 millioner er finansiert av nasjonale finansiører gjennom JPI Oceans), vil prosjektet fylle kritiske kunnskapshull om dyphavsøkosystemer og den potensielle effekten av gruvedrift på dem. Forskning vil ikke bare fokusere på polymetalliske knutefelt, men også adressere massive sulfidavsetninger, og kombinere eksisterende data med nye ekspedisjoner for å fremme vår forståelse av disse unike miljøene. Dette prosjektet er ment å gi avgjørende vitenskapelig bevis for å støtte informert beslutningstaking om fremtiden for havbunnsmineralutvinning og dens styrende internasjonal og nasjonal lovgivning.

MiningImpact3 har som mål å:
· Vurdere den romlige og tidsmessige variasjonen til dyphavsmiljøet
· Forstå genetiske sammenhenger mellom dyphavspopulasjoner
· Studere effekten av gruve-indusert toksisitet og press på bunn- og pelagiske samfunn.
· Støtte utviklingen av indikatorer for økosystemhelse og terskler for alvorlig skade
· Avanserte styrings- og styringsverktøy, inkludert digital tvillingteknologi
· Sammenligne virkningene av dyphavs- og landbasert gruvedrift

Prosjektet vil dra nytte av tilgang til forskningsfartøyet Sonne levert av det tyske forbundsdepartementet for utdanning og forskning. En ekspedisjon vil undersøke steder av tidligere polymetalliske knutergruveprøver i Clarion-Clipperton-sonen i det nordøstlige ekvatoriale Stillehavet fem år etter nedslaget. Ytterligere ekspedisjoner vil studere økosystemet ved havbunnens massive sulfidforekomster langs den arktiske midthavsryggen, med forskningstokt planlagt til Mohnsryggen i norske farvann i løpet av 2026 og 2027.

MiningImpact is the leading international research project investigating the environmental impacts of
future deep-sea mining (DSM). Since its start in 2015, it has delivered independent scientific research
output and significantly improved our knowledge on polymetallic nodule ecosystems in the Clarion-
Clipperton Zone (CCZ) and the Peru Basin and their responses to anthropogenic disturbances as
documented by >100 peer-reviewed publications (see Section VI). MiningImpact experts have closely
interacted with stakeholder groups (national and international authorities, industry, NGOs, the public),
and in particular the International Seabed Authority (ISA). Noteworthy are contributions to the CCZ
regional environmental management plan (REMP) (ISA, 2021a), draft Guidelines of the Mining Code
(ISA, 2022a, 2022b), and the current Intersessional Expert Group developing binding environmental
threshold values (ISA, 2022c). While the first phase of MiningImpact focussed on decade-old benthic
impact experiments in the CCZ (cruise SO239) and the DISCOL experiment in the Peru Basin (cruise
SO242), during and after the second phase an independent monitoring programme of the first
industrial trials of the pre-prototype nodule collector vehicle Patania II by GSR in the CCZ was delivered
(cruises SO268, IP21, SO295).
In the third project phase (MiningImpact-3), proposed here, we will focus on addressing identified
knowledge gaps (e.g., Boetius & Haeckel, 2018; Amon et al., 2022; Hitchin et al., 2023; Pickens et al.,
2024; Singh, 2021; Weaver et al., 2022) and furthering the understanding of the ecosystems associated
with polymetallic nodules (PMN) and seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) and their vulnerability and
resilience to mining.

Assessing the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules and seafloor massive sulphides

Solceller (photovoltaics, PV) utgjør på verdensbasis den største bidragsyteren til ny fornybar elektrisitetsproduksjon. Nesten all PV er basert på monokrystallinsk silisium laget med Czochralski-metoden som store ingoter, før de blir kuttet i løvtynne skiver (wafere). NorSun har lenge vært i forkant av utviklingen av høykvalitets monokrystallinsk n-type silisium. I dag er NorSun en av de få gjenværende Europeiske produsentene av monosilisium og wafere.  

Det globale PV-markedet beveger seg i dag mot større dimensjoner på ingot og wafere. I DIAMANT vil vi bruke detaljerte numeriske modeller som beskriver produksjonen av individuelle ingoter, inkludert fysiske egenskaper og kjemiske reaksjoner som forekommer gjennom den mange timer lange trekkeprosessen. Dette vil gi bedre forståelse av krystallvekst og vekstparametere, i tillegg til designet av trekkeovnen. Plasseringen av NorSuns fabrikk i Årdal sikrer en jevn forsyning av grønn elektrisitet med lavt CO2-avtrykk samt kjølevann. Gjennom prosjektet vil resulterende skiver bli behandlet og karakterisert for å verifisere de numeriske modellene og egenskapene til sluttproduktene. Resultatet vil være verdensledende bærekraft og energieffektivitet innen produksjon av solcellewafere.

NorSun is one of the few remaining European producers of monocrystalline ingots and wafers, with production
facilities in Norway. The silicon PV market is trending towards larger wafers sizes where M10 and G12 format wafers
from ingots produced in 36-40” hot zones are increasing most rapidly. Guided by detailed numerical modelling,
DIAMANT will bring together state-of-the-art ingot and crucible dimensions, understanding of growth kinetics and puller design to obtain world-leading sustainability and energy efficiency. Detailed FEM models of the large diameter
pullers will be established, and the physical properties and chemical reactions during the pulling process will be
simulated. The models will be verified towards processing parameters as well as material characterization of the final
product. The increased production volume and the increased yield will improve the overall energy efficiency of the
monocrystalline silicon ingot production.

RURALEX addresses the cumulative crisis of environmental expertise across rural Europe and investigates how this relates to broader processes of societal disenfranchisement. In recent years, many rural parts of Europe have struggled with the local effects of large demographic and associated ecological changes, including human out-migration and the abandonment of traditional forms of agriculture and other nature-based livelihoods. These shifts have led to significant losses in what we refer to as “environmental expertise”: loss of knowledge of the land, loss of important traditional practices, loss of tacit expertise about local environments, loss of cultural knowhow. This crisis is at once intangible and deeply impactful. RURALEX will address those profound changes in socio-ecological knowledges and practices, held by both scientific “experts” and lay persons, through long-term ethnographic engagement and deep mapping tools that will be developed collaboratively by the project partners. The project will determine what is being lost and its impact, how these changes take place, and what processes might be put in motion to ensure that local knowledge is adequately valued at the policy-making level. To do so the project draws on multispecies perspectives grounded in anthropology, history, literary, cultural and sound studies, and the environmental humanities. 

RURALEX is a consortium of six universities in Finland, Estonia, Romania, the UK, and Spain, beside Norway, and comparative and collaborative methods will be employed throughout the project.

Knowledge in Crisis: The Dynamics of Environmental Expertise amidst Rural Change

Glacier retreat is escalating in response to amplified Arctic warming. This exposes large areas of new glacier forefield to seasonal freeze-thaw, wetting-drying cycles and variable oxygen conditions. These physical changes dramatically alter biogeochemical cycling in previously glaciated sediments, facilitating soil and vegetation development in the 21st century. Arctic streams are well-known suppliers of the key nutrient nitrogen (N) to N-limited fjords and coasts, which host lucrative fisheries. However, the influence of glacial retreat and associated soil development on N release to streams, thus fjords and coasts, is a complete unknown. The PULSE project aims to quantify the impact of Arctic glacier forefield exposure on soil N cycling and export to coastal marine environments, and how they are influenced by time since deglaciation, local geology and freeze-thaw cycling. In PULSE, I will measure N release from a field scale chronosequence in a Sub-Arctic glaciated catchment and quantify the forefield soil N contribution to river N runoff. I further use a “space for time” approach to simulate future climate conditions for High Arctic forefield sediments, thus predicting future High Arctic forefield N release. This highly interdisciplinary project combines my background in soil biogeochemistry with glacier hydrochemistry at the Arctic University of Tromsø (UiT). UiT is the ideal host for me to gain new analytical chemistry and modelling skills in order to establish how future glacier retreat will shift sources of riverine N transport to downstream fjords and coasts. A secondment to the Norwegian Polar Institute will additionally expand my scientific expertise and network to include marine monitoring stakeholders directly using my results. PULSE will, therefore, provide a high-impact, first quantification of future potential proglacial soil N leaching across Sub-Arctic to High Arctic climates, which will inform future ecosystem management policies in the Arctic.

Potential nUtrient release from deglaciating Land Surfaces to downstream Ecosystems (PULSE)

Norges matsystem står overfor betydelige utfordringer. Jordbruket må redusere klimagassutslipp, stoppe tap av natur og fremme biologisk mangfold. Nye kostråd og andre trender kan føre til et mer plantebasert kosthold. Imidlertid er virkemidler som skal møte disse utfordringene ofte i konflikt med hverandre. For eksempel kan tiltak for å redusere klimagassutslipp være i konflikt med tiltak som beskytter lokale livsgrunnlag eller opprettholder jordbruk over hele landet. Ambisiøse mål på tvers av sektorer som klima, folkehelse og jordbruk trekker ofte i ulike retninger.
Utfordringen er ikke bare å erkjenne disse målene, men å finne måter å oppnå dem på. Norge trenger en transformasjon av matsystemet som balanserer økonomiske, miljømessige og sosiale hensyn. Virkemidlene må oppfylle klima- og miljømål, forbedre folkehelsen og sikre robuste matsystemer, samtidig som de tar hensyn til ulikheter på tvers av regioner og husholdninger.
For å navigere i disse kompleksitetene, benytter CHEOPS en tverrfaglig tilnærming for å analysere avveininger, synergier, samt kostnader og fordeler ved ulike alternativer for politikk. Økonomiske modeller vil utforske spørsmål som: Hvordan vil redusert kjøttforbruk påvirke utslipp, folkehelse og lokalsamfunn? Kan slike tiltak utilsiktet øke ulikhet eller redusere matsikkerhet?
Hovedmålet med prosjektet CHEOPS er å identifisere politikkvalg som (1) er i tråd med mål for klima, miljø og folkehelse, og (2) er økonomisk effektive, sosialt rettferdige og politisk gjennomførbare.
Prosjektet ledes av Ruralis i samarbeid med Menon Economics, NIBIO og Universitetet i Oslo, og vil bruke et integrert analytisk rammeverk for å veilede politikkutforming. Prosjektteamet vil samarbeide tett med aktører fra offentlig, privat og sivilsamfunnet for å sikre at forskningen møter reelle samfunnsutfordringer.
Gjennom en helhetlig tilnærming har prosjektet som mål å identifisere veier mot et bærekraftig, sunt og motstandsdyktig matsystem for Norge.

Norway’s food system is challenged not only from internal goal conflicts, but also from increasing ambitions regarding agriculture and food from other policy areas. Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture must be reduced, nature loss must come to a halt, biodiversity must be improved, and new dietary recommendations are expected to move diets towards less meat consumption and production.
A key challenge and knowledge gap is to identify policy options that help achieve a successful transformation that is economically efficient, sustainable, socially acceptable, and politically feasible. This requires policy goals for FECP to be achieved together with other societal goals such as equal living standards across households and regions.
We propose novel, holistic, interdisciplinary, and integrated impact assessment to disentangle the multiple interdependencies associated with food, environment, climate, and public health (FECP) and their related policies. The main method is economic modelling to analyse trade-offs, synergies, benefits, and costs of FECP based on monetary and non-monetary valuation that allows to compare FECP ambitions.
The primary objective is to identify options and solutions for a sustainable development of the food sector in Norway accounting for policy ambitions and interdependencies between food, environment, climate, public health, and other societal goals. Secondary objectives include the identification of main FECP linkages and indicators, valuation of FECP relationships, development of an impact assessment framework realized as a policy planning tool, formulation of policy-relevant scenarios, and synthesis of impacts and recommendation of policy options. 
Ruralis will lead the project with partners from Menon Economics, NIBIO, and the University of Oslo. The research group is gender-balanced and highly experienced. A science-policy interface and dialogue ensures cooperation with collaboration partners from public, private and civil sectors.

Integrating climate, environment, and public health in the Norwegian food system to assess efficient, safe, and acceptable policy options

De siste tiårene har varmere atlantiske vannmasser trengt dypere inn i det sentrale Polhavet (CAO) og svekket de typiske ekstreme kuldeforholdene. Denne endringen påvirker mangfoldet og funksjonen til marine organismer, og endrer hvordan karbon transporteres fra overflaten til dypet — en prosess som spiller en viktig rolle i å regulere jordens klima. Disse endringene strekker seg utover Arktis og påvirker verdenshavene og klimaet. Likevel er vår forståelse av CAO fortsatt begrenset. Tradisjonelt har forskere trodd at CAO stort sett var lite produktivt, spesielt om vinteren og i dypere vannlag. Nyere vinterekspedisjoner har utfordret dette synet, og viser at de sesongmessige og regionale variasjonene i CAO er mer komplekse enn tidligere antatt. Det ser ut til at oppvarmingseffektene varierer både geografisk og gjennom året. For å forstå disse prosessene bedre skal SEDNA-prosjektet delta i en banebrytende 15-måneders ekspedisjon fra den nye Tara Polar Station (TPS), en drivende forskningsplattform i Arktis. Målet er å følge og måle effekten av sesongmessige og regionale endringer på det marine økosystemet. SEDNA vil fokusere på små organismer som plankton og mikroorganismer, samt fisk, for å se hvordan de reagerer på de nye varmere forholdene og hvordan dette påvirker karbonkretsløpet. Resultatene fra SEDNA vil være avgjørende for et større internasjonalt samarbeid som undersøker hele spekteret av arktiske økosystemer, fra vannmassene til isen og atmosfæren. Prosjektet har også som mål å utvikle en datamodell av økosystemet for å hjelpe beslutningstakere med å håndtere de raske endringene i Arktis. Denne ekspedisjonen markerer starten på et 20-årig forskningsprogram ved TPS, og gir en unik mulighet til å samle langtidsdata. Ved å forstå hvordan de fysiske, biologiske og kjemiske prosessene i Arktis endres gjennom sesongene, kan vi bedre forutsi og håndtere klimaendringenes innvirkning på dette miljøet.

The Central Arctic Ocean (CAO) endures ongoing Atlantification, defined as a relaxation of extreme Arctic conditions due to increased intrusion of warmer Atlantic waters. In turn, changing oceanographic conditions modify the diversity and functionality of pelagic organisms as well as carbon export through physical and biological carbon pumps. These processes percolate outside the CAO and have strong impacts on the world’s oceans and climate. Yet, our understanding of the functioning of the CAO is limited and based on the paradigm that the winter season and deep basins are not productive. A handful of sporadic overwintering research programs have suggested that seasonality and regionality are more complex than expected and that the effects of Atlantification do vary across seasons and basins. The complexity of the marine processes occurring in the CAO remains to be studied over long time periods and with high taxonomic resolution to inform  resource managers and climate models. By participating in the first 15-month drift expedition from the new Tara Polar Station (TPS), SEDNA aims to identify and quantify the links between seasonal and spatial changes in physical ocean conditions and the pelagic ecosystem of the CAO. More precisely, we seek to better understand how pelagic microorganisms, primary producers, zooplankton, and fish react to Atlantification regimes across seasons and how it impacts carbon export. SEDNA will be a key part of a large international consortium examining CAO ecosystems, from pelagic to ice-associated and atmospheric processes, and will directly inform management by using its observations to develop a dynamic ecosystem model for managers. Covering the first drift of a continuous twenty-year program for the TPS, it will allow understanding physical, biological, and biogeochemical seasonal dynamics to better manage the ‘new’ Arctic, and provide unique datasets for assessing the impacts of climate change over the next two decades.

SEDNA: Assess Seasonality in Pelagic Diversity and Carbon Export within the Central Arctic Ocean

Dette prosjektet tar sikte på å løse problemet med hudsår hos oppdrettet atlantisk laks, som ofte skyldes bakterier som infiserer sår fra mekanisk avlusing. Disse sårene, som inneholder skadelige bakterier som Moritella viscosa, Tenacibaculum sp. og Aliivibrio wodanis, er vanskelige å helbrede og utgjør store utfordringer for laksens helse og lønnsomheten i akvakultur.

Vi vil undersøke hvordan de angitte bakteriene samhandler eller interferer med fiskens sårhelingsprosess for å utvikle bedre forebyggingsstrategier, inkludert vaksiner. Ved å studere hvordan disse bakteriene invaderer og opprettholder seg i sår og forstå hvorfor laksens immunforsvar har vanskeligheter med å heles, håper prosjektet å designe effektive vaksiner, inkludert DNA- og mRNA-vaksiner, for å styrke fiskens immunitet.

Ved hjelp av avanserte teknikker som RNAscope og RNA-sekvensering vil vi profilere immunresponsen direkte i fiskenes sår og gjennom isolerte immunceller på forskjellige stadier av helingsprosessen. Studien kombinerer ekspertise innen bakteriell biologi, fiskeimmunologi og vaksineteknologi. Suksess kan forbedre fiskens helse, redusere forekomsten av sår og fremme bærekraftige praksis i lakseoppdrett.

The project explores the interaction between ulcer-causing bacteria (ulcerome) and the wound-healing process in Atlantic salmon skin ulcers to enhance immune prevention strategies. Skin ulcers, primarily caused by mechanical delousing methods, pose significant welfare and economic challenges in salmon aquaculture. These ulcers are often infected by bacteria like Moritella viscosa, Tenacibaculum sp., and Aliivibrio wodanis, which can form biofilms and thrive with many by-standing bacterial species, complicating the healing process. We ask a simple question - can a better understanding of the pathogenicity profiles of ulcer-forming bacteria be translated for improved prevention of skin ulcers in salmon? The project seeks to understand the colonization and infection mechanisms of these bacteria, the host's failure to regenerate lesions, and to develop effective vaccination strategies based on virulence factors like lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) and exopolysaccharides (EPS). It will employ a comprehensive approach combining pathogen characterization, immune response analysis, and innovative vaccine design, including recombinant protein vaccines, and DNA and mRNA vaccines. The wound healing process is studied in situ and ex vivo by immune profiling using RNAscope methodology (in situ) and isolation of macrophage populations from skin wounds at different stages of inflammation and regeneration (ex vivo). Immune profiling will include RNAseq studies of isolated macrophage populations. The project's interdisciplinary team will leverage advanced methodologies and extensive expertise in bacterial virulence, fish immunology, and vaccine development. This research could significantly impact salmon farming by reducing ulcer incidence, improving fish welfare, and contributing to the sustainability of aquaculture operations.

Deciphering the interplay between the ulcerome and wound healing processes in skin ulcers of Atlantic salmon for improved immune prevention

Moderne energisystemer er sterkt avhengige av materialer med egenskaper som er optimaliserte for konkrete anvendelser, som f.eks. energilagring i batterier, selektiv ione-transport i elektrokjemiske celler, eller omdanning av lys til ladningsbærere i solceller. Nylige fremskritt innen beregningskraft og databaserte metoder åpner nå opp for utforming av materialer med ønskede funksjonelle egenskaper via høy-hastighets modellering kombinert med maskinlæring, hvor viktige faktorer som materialstabilitet og energinivåer introduseres allerede på beregningsstadiet. I prosjektet vil denne metodikken utvikles og benyttes på en relativt ny materialklasse, såkalte høyentropi-materialer, hvor et stort antall grunnstoffer (typisk 5 eller flere) kombineres til en stabil struktur. Fokus vil være på spesifikke lagdelte strukturer som er lovende med tanke på vannelektrolyse og hydrogenproduksjon. Prosjektet kombinerer avanserte databaserte metoder og eksperimentelle teknikker og inkluderer internasjonalt samarbeid for å oppnå grunnleggende forståelse av relasjonen mellom kjemisk sammensetning, struktur og egenskaper for disse nye materialene. Målet er å utvikle en metodologi for å forutsi stabile funksjonelle høyentropi-materialer og demonstrere vannelektrolyse med et av materialene fremstilt i prosjektet.

Due to recent advances in computational methods, materials with desired functional properties can now be designed through high-throughput ab initio methods and atomistic modeling combined with machine learning, introducing already at the computational stage critical factors such as structural stability and energy band structure. This emerging methodology has great promises, as it bypasses the traditional trial-and-error approach, but it is critically dependent on feedback from experiments (ideally in-operando data). In this project this approach is used on a relatively new class of materials, so-called high-entropy materials (HEMs) where a large number of elements (5 or more, including non-metals) are combined to a stable uniform structure. In particular, the focus is on 2D HEMs, that has recently been found to have a range of unusual properties, making them highly promising for tunable catalytic reactions, such as water splitting and H2-generation. The project uses an interdisciplinary approach with international collaboration, combining state-of-the-art computational and experimental tools to gain predictive power and fundamental understanding of composition-structure-property relationships in these high-entropy materials, with the aim of developing a generic methodology for predicting stable functional HEMs and finally demonstrating beyond state-of-the-art performance for water splitting with a novel 2D HEM.

Samkjøring og bestillingstransport har et potensial til å revolusjonere transportsystemet i distriktene ved at kapasiteten i kjøretøyene utnyttes på en bedre måte. Dette bidrar til et mer miljøvennlig, mer økonomisk levedyktig og mer inkluderende transportsystem. 
Prosjektet vil gi kunnskap om og verktøy som skal stimulere til at tilbudet om samkjøring i kombinasjon med kollektivtransport kan utvides på en måte som kommer både brukerne og operatørene til nytte, samtidig som kostandene holdes nede. Det vil vi gjøre ved å studere tre ulike og innovative forretningsmodeller for samkjøring som testes i tre ulike regioner i Norge (Vestlandet, Trøndelag og Agder). Løsningene skiller seg fra tidligere samkjøringsløsninger på to måter: de er offentlig subsidiert, og de retter seg mot spredtbygdestrøk. 
Prosjektet har fem delmål: 
i)	få inngående kunnskap om hva som forklarer bruk/ikke bruk av samkjøring, 
ii)	få kunnskap om hvordan ulike samkjøringstjenester påvirker bilbruk, reiseatferd og tilgjengelighet, 
iii)	optimere rute- og frekvensplanleggingen for samkjøring i kombinasjon med offentlig transport for å forbedre den generelle mobiliteten og velferden til befolkningen i rurale områder, samt å redusere de eksterne kostnadene ved persontransport, 
iv)	identifisere barrierer og suksessfaktorer for oppskalering, og 
v)	å gi interessenter kunnskap og verktøy for å forsterke en oppskalering av samkjøring. 
For å nå disse målene vil vi bruke en blanding av metoder og data (f.eks. fokusgrupper, undersøkelser, geokodede brukerdata, arealbruksstatistikk). Ved å dra nytte av allerede innsamlede data vil vi utvikle panelstudier som vil gjøre det mulig for oss å måle og gi kunnskap om effekten av samkjøring på reiseatferd, utslipp og tilgjengelighet.
Kritiske interessenter er inkludert i prosjektet - alt fra kollektivtransportleverandører, samkjøringsselskaper til fylker- og kommuner - for å bygge bro mellom kunnskapsgenerering og praktiske anvendning.

On-demand ridesharing and shared mobility solutions increase vehicles occupancy and have the potential to revolutionize the transport system in rural areas, making it more environmentally friendly, more economically viable and more socially sustainable. This project will provide knowledge on and tools to stimulate a cost-effective upscaling of ridesharing in rural areas. We will do so by studying three different and innovative business models for ridesharing that are being piloted in three different regions of Norway (Vestlandet, Trøndelag and Agder). These solutions stand out from earlier ridesharing solutions in two ways: they are publicly subsidized, and they target rural areas. 

The overall objective is to stimulate a cost-effective upscaling of public subsidized ridesharing to facilitate a more efficient, sustainable and inclusive transport system in rural areas, by i) gain in-depth understanding on the mechanisms for adoption of ridesharing, ii) gain knowledge on how it impacts car use, travel behaviour and accessibility, iii) optimize ridesharing in tandem with rural public transport to improve the overall mobility and welfare of rural transport users, and reduce the external costs of passenger transport, iv) identify barriers and success factors for upscaling, and v) to provide stakeholders with resources and tools to amplify an upscaling of ridehsaring. This objective addresses the knowledge needs of the collaborative partners and knowledge gaps in the literature. Our project is tailored to reach this objective through a sound theoretical framework, integrated method design, unique data sets (paneldata with a treatment and reference group and user data with gps, combined with land use statistics), as well as qualitative data (e.g focus group interviews and workshops), and an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral consortium, consisting of research institutes, universities and public sector actors.

Combining Public transit and Ride Sharing in rural Transport

BRAVO (Barents Sea Arctic Cenozoic Evolution and Paleogeographical Reconstructions) aims to reconstruct the Barents Sea Gateway since the Cenozoic (the last 66 Myr).

To do so, BRAVO’s objectives are to 1) reveal the effect of sediment loading–unloading, lithospheric strength, and surface-mantle processes on shaping the Cenozoic paleobathymetry-topography of Barents Sea, to 2) constrain the timing of the formation of the BSG, to 3) identify the interplay between climate dynamics and tectonics in erosion and deposition of sediments in the paleo-Barents Sea, and (4) compare the development of the BSG and Fram Strait, as well as the regional to global consequences of the Arctic-Atlantic shallow water connection.

BRAVO will achieve these objectives by numerical modelling (inc. finite element and volumetric methods) using open-source platforms of pyGPlates, pyBadlands and high-resolution 2D–3D seismic, well, gravity and magnetic data analyses. BRAVO’s results will be self-consistent 4D Earth models (space and time) of paleobathymetry-topography of Barents Sea Gateway and corresponding sedimentary pathways and accumulation. BRAVO’s ambition is to provide the most reliable paleobathymetric-topographic reconstruction of the Barents Sea Gateway for the Cenozoic. BRAVO will quantify the role of Barents Sea Gateway in exchanging Atlantic–Arctic water, highlight the significance of erosion–deposition of sediments in shaping the gateway, and form the basis for updated global oceanographic and climatic simulations. BRAVO’s pioneering model of the complete Cenozoic source-to-sink analysis for the regional Barents Sea will be a breakthrough for Arctic seabed characterization for offshore wind turbines and mapping slope failure geohazards."
