Forskere har lenge debattert om spesifikke endringer i måten genene våre reguleres på, kalt epigenetiske endringer eller "epimutasjoner," kan øke risikoen for kreft. Våre nylige banebrytende undersøkelser har gitt sterke bevis på at epimutasjoner faktisk er en risikofaktor for visse typer kreft.
I en studie av en stor gruppe kvinner fant vi at de som hadde epimutasjoner i BRCA1-genet, hadde mye større risiko for å utvikle trippel-negativ brystkreft og høygradig serøs eggstokkreft senere i livet. Disse epimutasjonene ser ut til å oppstå tidlig under fosterutviklingen, og fører til at det fødte barnet (og senere det voksne individet) har en mosaikk av celler i kroppen, der noen få celler bærer epimutasjonen.
Nå har vi som mål å utvide disse studiene til andre gener og andre former for kreft. For å gjøre dette vil vi analysere blodprøver fra en studie som har rekruttert over 160 000 kvinner i USA.
Hvis denne forskningen lykkes, kan den revolusjonere vår forståelse av hvordan kreft utvikler seg og føre til bedre forebyggende tiltak. Det kan også ha store implikasjoner for kreftscreeningprogrammer og genetisk veiledning for personer med høy risiko for visse typer kreft.
Alt i alt fremhever vår forskning den viktige rollen som epigenetiske endringer kan spille i kreftutvikling og understreker behovet for ytterligere undersøkelser på dette området.

Cancers result from accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations. The minority of cancers are due to inherited (germline) alterations that affect all cells in the body. On the other hand, the majority of cancers (>85%; sporadic cancers) are believed to occur due to localised alterations that accumulate after birth as a result of stochastic processes and/or environmental effects. Recently, in a major breakthrough work, we have provided definitive evidence that some sporadic cancers arise in adult life due to mosaic BRCA1 epimutations that occurred during the early embryonic development. BRCA1 epimutations have a surprisingly high population frequency (>5% of adult women) and hazard ratios for breast and ovarian cancer (2.4 and 1.9, respectively). Together with the findings of epimutations in other tumour suppressor genes (MGMT, MLH1, etc) this has led us to hypothesise that a substantial fraction of other sporadic cancers can be attributed to prenatal epimutations in other tumour suppressor genes.

In this project, we will use ultradeep targeted methylation sequencing for quantitative and qualitative analyses of epimutations. Evaluation of cancer risk related to epimutations will be done by studying samples from prospective biobanks (WHI) with samples from healthy women that remained cancer-free or developed different types of incident cancers years/decades after samples were taken. We will also characterise epimutations present in samples of newborn boys and girls, as well as their parents (MoBa biobank). Finally, using cryopreserved blood-derived stem-like cells from young healthy males and female breast cancer patients (in-house biobank), we will assess mutational and epimutational mosaicism at the single-cell level, generating clonal phylogeny for the methylated cells and thus providing insights on early-developmental processes that create epimutations.

Mosaic epimutations: population prevalence, mechanistic origins, and their role in cancer

Kunstig lys om natten (ALAN) setter naturen ut av balanse. Mange dyr er avhengige av lengden på dagslyset (fotoperioden) som signal for å synkronisere reproduksjon med gunstige forhold. Forstyrrelser i dette naturlige signalet, enten gjennom lysforurensning fra urban belysning eller akvakultur, kan ha alvorlige konsekvenser for dyrs livssyklus og overlevelse. Prosjektet mitt tar sikte på å avdekke de biologiske mekanismene bak sesongmessig reproduksjon for bedre å forutsi og redusere disse påvirkningene. Jeg vil undersøke et nøkkelhormon, thyroidstimulerende hormon (TSH), og dets funksjon i reguleringen av sesongmessig reproduksjon hos dyr ved å bruke medaka (japansk risfisk) som modell.
Denne lille fisken er perfekt for genetiske studier, da det allerede finnes mange verktøy og protokoller for denne arten for å studere i detalj de cellulære og molekylære mekanismene som er involvert i essensielle kroppsfunksjoner, som for eksempel reproduksjon. For å undersøke dette vil jeg bruke avanserte genetiske verktøy og optogenetikk, en metode som bruker lys til å kontrollere celleaktivitet, for å avdekke mekanismen som regulerer det sesongmessige tidspunktet for reproduksjon. Ved å dekode hvordan dyr tilpasser sin sesongmessige reproduksjon til forstyrrelser i lyssignaler, vil dette prosjektet belyse hvordan vi kan ivareta biologisk mangfold og utvikle bærekraftig akvakulturpraksis.

Seasonal reproduction in vertebrates ensures offspring survival by aligning reproductive timing with photoperiod as the primary cue. However, artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts these cues, posing a threat to species survival. Similarly, continuous light used in aquaculture to inhibit fish reproduction may have unintended physiological effects. OptoSeason seeks to decode the mechanisms underlying seasonal reproduction as a critical step toward predicting and mitigating the impact of these environmental disturbances.
Research in mammals and birds suggests that thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the pituitary pars tuberalis (PT-TSH) regulates seasonal reproduction. However, the role of PT-TSH remains controversial due to the challenges of knocking out the Tshb gene without affecting essential thyroid functions. Thanks to the teleost-specific whole-genome duplication (WGD), we can now study a TSH gene specifically involved in seasonal reproduction using teleost fish models. Our previous findings indicate that tshbb plays a crucial role in this process.
To unravel these mechanisms, OptoSeason will develop a next-gen optogenetic tool in Japanese medaka, a seasonally breeding teleost suitable for genetic manipulation and knockout studies. Considering its potential, this tool also has broader applications across various biological research areas. We will also employ advanced techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout/knock-in, receptor assays, laser microdissection, transcriptomics, calcium imaging, and patch clamping to explore the tshbb pathway and its link to reproduction.
Understanding this pathway will help identify markers for out-of-season spawning risks due to ALAN and provide insights into environmental and genetic influences on reproduction. This research will address challenges like early puberty in aquaculture, advance scientific knowledge, and develop tools to tackle key environmental and industrial issues.

OptoSeason: decoding seasonal reproduction in vertebrates using a next-gen optogenetic tool

Kreftvev inneholder ikke bare kreftceller, men også en rekke forskjellige immunceller. Noen av dem er nyttige, andre bytter side og hjelper nå svulsten. Kunnskapen om fordelingen av immuncelletyper til en pasient er svært viktig. Denne informasjonen er med på å definere den beste personlige behandlingen, gi en klarere overlevelsesprognose eller hjelper å definere nye mulige behandlingsalternativer. 
I tillegg gjennomgår immunceller i tumormikromiljøet flere endringer, noen er nyttige i kampen mot kreft, andre hjelper svulsten til å vokse eller spre seg. Kunnskapen om disse endringene i de ulike immuncelletypene hjelper til med å forklare prosessene i svulsten eller til å oppdage mulige nye biomarkører for behandlingsalternativer. 
I dette prosjektet ønsker vi å ta hensyn til både den romlige fordelingen og endringene av de forskjellige immuncelletypene avhengig av deres lokalisering i forhold til kreftvev. Hvilke endringer kan vi finne? Hvordan påvirker de hverandre og hvordan påvirkes de av svulsten? Vi ønsker å bruke denne kunnskapen til å oppdage nye mulige biomarkører for behandlingsalternativer.

Spatial transcriptomics provides unprecedented details about the molecular mechanisms that take place within and between cells. ST assesses the molecular content of well-defined regions in a tissue which potentially cover contributions from multiple cells. In order to draw correct biological conclusions from ST analysis, spatial distributions of individual cell types are a prerequisite. This generates an urgent need for computational methods addressing this question. However, computational estimates of cellular compositions from ST are complicated by several factors. First, the methods require well curated data which is usually not available; every specimen has its own individual characteristics and so, every tissue type or even every patient, might require a own, comprehensively verified model. Second, data is noisy, making estimates prone to errors. Moreover, even if a computational model is designed for a specific tissue or even patient, it might be miss-specified, leading to additional systematic errors. In this project, we will develop a toolbox called Computational Dissection of Cellular Distributions (CDCD), which directly accounts for these issues. CDCD will advance the state of the art by (1) taking into account a priori unknown, hidden cellular background contributions, (2) taking into account environmental factors (i.e., tissue and patient dependence), and by (3) comprehensive errors estimation. Intriguingly, in contrast to available techniques, CDCD will facilitate estimates of cellular regulation in space! Such gene-regulation gradients will allow us to address questions of how immune cells adapt their molecular phenotype with respect to their environment. Additionally we will verify our algorithms on a conjoint norwegian phase II melanoma case study. CDCD will be made freely available via easy-to-use webpage and software solution, enabling both expert bioinformaticians and wet-lab biologists an efficient use of the to-be-developed methodology.

Computational dissection of cellular distributions and cell-type specific regulation patterns from spatial transcriptomics data

WebData vil tilrettelegge for forskning på data fra det norske internett, tilsvarende tjenester som Nettbiblioteket og DH-lab fra Nasjonalbiblioteket for fysisk materiale. WebData vil altså gi forskere adgang til data som ikke er tilgjengelige i en infrastruktur i dag, men som det er et stort behov for.

Nasjonalbiblioteket har hentet og lagret data fra det norske internett siden slutten av 1990-tallet og sitter på enorme mengder med data. Dette materialet har man i liten grad kunnet tilgjengeliggjøre, blant annet fordi lovverket setter strenge krav til håndtering av personopplysninger i slike arkiver. Samtidig har den offentlige samtalen for en stor del flyttet seg til nettet, slik at det er blitt viktigere å kunne forske på data fra denne delen av offentligheten. I tillegg spiller data fra nettet en særlig rolle i arbeidet med kunstig intelligens og store språkmodeller. Skal norsk og samisk overleve i den digitale tidsalderen, trenger vi så mye data som mulig av høy kvalitet for å støtte opp under språkteknologi.

WebData skal derfor bygge en plattform for forskning på materiale fra nettet i tråd med gjeldende lovverk. Det vil gis åpen tilgang til materiale publisert av det offentlige og adgang for forskningsformål til materiale utgitt med og uten ansvarlig redaktør. Vi vil ta i bruk kunnskap om og verktøy for identifisering og vasking av personopplysninger for å klassifisere materiale og bygge et system for sikker tilgang.

Plattformen skal utvikles i tett samarbeid med forskersamfunnet. Vi vil gjennomføre en behovsstudie tidlig i prosjektet for å kartlegge hvilken funksjonalitet forskerne trenger (f.eks. visualisering av ordbruk over tid, uttrekk og analyse av hendelser) som igjen vil legge føringer for tilrettelegging av data. Prosjektet har som mål å styrke samiske språks representasjon. Vi vil gjennomføre en representasjonsstudie for å undersøke hvor godt samisk er dekket i nettarkivet og gjøre tiltak for å forbedre høstingen av samiskspråklig innhold.

The National Library of Norway, a major cultural heritage institution in Norway, joins forces with some of the most prominent research communities for language technology in Norway to create WebData, a national research infrastructure for web data. WebData will offer researchers access to the Norwegian Web Archive, hosted on-premises at the National Library of Norway. The infrastructure will first and foremost consist of a data platform featuring a general purpose search interface for web data from the Norwegian web (the .no top-level domain) from the last 25 years, allowing researchers to search and explore web pages, documents, transcribed audio/video and images.

The platform will implement a model of layered access, using automatic categorization and identification of personal information to open parts of the collection that would otherwise be closed due to regulatory policies, which is a major R&D challenge and one of the main reasons why the material is not available today. The web archive will further be scaled up according to the needs of researchers and underrepresented communities, e.g. allowing for quantitative analysis of web data and by increasing the coverage of Sámi web content. The infrastructure will contribute to research on Norwegian and Sámi language and culture and produce language resources, e.g. corpora for large language models, that help prevent domain-loss of these languages.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and aims primarily at researchers in the social sciences and humanities, but will also be relevant for e.g. computer science, medicine and law.

Norwegian research infrastructure for web data

Dette prosjektet har som mål å undersøke nervedannelse i primær brystkreft og hjernemetastaser fra brystkreft. Vår hypotese er at en undergruppe av aggressive brystkreftsvulster involverer nervestrukturer for å fremme tumorprogresjon, inkludert metastaser til hjernevev, som er den mest nevrogene nisjen i kroppen.

Hos kvinner er brystkreft den hyppigste kreftsykdommen og den ledende årsaken til kreftrelaterte dødsfall verden over. Trippel-negativ eller basaloid brystkreft er de mest utfordrende subgruppene, på grunn av mangel på effektive behandlingsmål. Studier av nervefiber-tetthet i brystkreft har vist at høyt innerverte svulster er mer aggressive, og tilstedeværelse av nerve-elementer er assosiert med økt metastasering og forverret pasientprognose. Våre foreløpige data, fra vevsanalyse av to brystkreftserier, bekrefter disse funnene. Vi anser derfor nerveinvolvering som en ny og lovende biomarkør i vår forståelse av aggressiv brystkreft.

Nerver er små fiber-strukturer i svulster, som nåler i en høystakk, og vanskelig å oppdage ved vanlig mikroskopisk undersøkelse. Derfor eksisterer det ikke automatiserte prosedyrer for deteksjon av slike svulst-nerver, og nervene sin klinisk-patologiske betydning er lite kjent. I dette prosjektet vil vi utvikle mer sensitive metoder for å påvise små nerveelementer i vev fra svulster, ved hjelp av avansert bildeteknologi. Interaksjon mellom kreftceller og nerver vil bli analysert i funksjonelle studier.

Vår hypotese er at aggressive brystkreftceller utrykker hittil ukjente markører som kontrollerer tiltrekning av nerver til primærsvulsten, og at denne tiltrekningen forårsaker endringer i en undergruppe av brystkreftceller som fremmer spredning til hjernen.

Recent data indicate that nerves might play an active role in the initiation and progress of cancer. In the breast, research by us and others has demonstrated that enhanced innervation is associated with more aggressive tumors, such as the triple negative subtype (TNBC) supporting the formation of a neurogenic niche in primary tumors. However, the detailed clinical relevance of this phenomenon, and the mechanisms by which nerves are attracted to breast tumors and how breast cancer-nerve interaction promotes aggressive tumor features, remain unexplored. Moreover, we lack good experimental models for breast cancer innervation in a human setting. 

TNBCs with a basal-like phenotype are also prone to metastasize to the brain, the most neurogenic niche in the body, but the preference for the brain as a metastatic site is not understood, neither are the phenotypic alterations that breast cancer cells undergo in brain tissue. Here, we launch a new concept - epithelial-to-neural transition (ENT) – linking cancer cell plasticity and nerve involvement in primary and brain metastatic breast cancer. We suggest that aggressive breast cancer cells express yet unknown markers that control attraction of nerves at the primary site, and that some breast cancer cells even transform by acquiring neural-like properties and spread to the brain. Epithelial-to-neural transition will be investigated both clinically and experimentally in primary and brain metastatic breast cancer by combining large clinical cohorts, spatial omics technology, and stem cell methods to establish cutting-edge models. 

This project has the potential to change the way we view neural elements in breast cancer and provide the field with new clinical relevance, models and technologies to study them.

When breast cancer hits a nerve
- Neural involvement as a hallmark of tumor progression

Kvantemekanikk ble opprinnelig utviklet for å forstå naturlovene på skalaen til enkeltpartikler. Kvantemekanikk viste seg imidlertid også å gi en svært nøyaktig beskrivelse av oppførselen til materialer: spennende fenomener som superledning og magnetisme har en fullstendig kvantemekanisk opprinnelse.

Vi går nå inn i en æra hvor radikalt nye teknologier basert på kvanteteori er innen rekkevidde. Eksempler er kvanteberegning, hvor informasjon kodes i kvantebiter (qubits), og spinnbasert informasjonsbehandling, hvor man bruker det kvantemekaniske "spinnet" til elektroner for å overføre informasjon. Hybrid-strukturer som består av forskjellige materialer som er vert for forskjellige kvantefenomener tiltrekker seg mye oppmerksomhet i denne sammenhengen ettersom de kan tillate "konstruksjon" av kvanteegenskaper. Dette kan potensielt gi for eksempel svært innstillbare elementer for superledende elektriske kretser og nye enheter som støytolerante qubits.

En kvantemekanisk egenskap som først nylig har begynt å tiltrekke seg oppmerksomhet, er den orbitale dreieimpulsen til elektroner som forplanter seg gjennom faste stoffer. En interessant forskjell mellom spinn og orbital dreieimpuls er at mens størrelsen på spinn er lik for alle elektroner, har orbital dreieimpuls i prinsippet ingen øvre grense. Derfor bør det være mulig å oppnå mer effektiv transport av dreieimpuls ved å bruke orbital frihetsgrad i stedet for spinn.

I dette prosjektet utforsker vi potensialet til hybridsystemer som består av slike orbitalt aktive materialer og superledere. Vi vil først utvikle den grunnleggende teorien for å forstå samspillet mellom dynamikken til orbital dreieimpuls og superledning. Vi vil deretter vurdere potensialet som hybrid superledende orbitronikk har til å gi opphav til nye fenomener og muliggjøre kvanteteknologiske funksjoner, slik som elektrisk styrt ukonvensjonell superledning, store termoelektriske effekter, innstillbare superledende dioder og beskyttede qubit-arkitekturer.

Besides spin, electrons can also carry orbital angular momentum, and the emerging field of orbitronics studies the behavior of this orbital degree of freedom and its interaction with charge and spin in solid-state devices. The interplay between superconductivity and non-trivial orbital physics remains largely unexplored, and in this project we will fill this knowledge gap by developing a theoretical framework to describe orbitally polarized superconducting heterostructures, both in and out of equilibrium.
	We will first develop the understanding of the proximity effects, i.e., the “leakage” of superconducting correlations and orbital polarization across the interfaces in a heterostructure. Then we apply this understanding to proximity-induced superconductivity in the p-type valence band of a semiconductor, where the low-energy carriers (holes) have an effective J=3/2 angular momentum. Semiconductor-based hole gases form an attractive platform for various quantum-technological devices, and we will use our theory to investigate the detailed potential of hole-based superconductor-semiconductor hybrids for applications such as qubit-qubit coupling of spin qubits and the hosting of Andreev spin qubits.
	In the field of spintronics, it is known that spin magnetoresistance and spin Hall effects can be enhanced by adding superconducting elements. Using our non-equilibrium theory, we will investigate the idea that substituting quantum spin by the orbital degree of freedom could lead to even more efficient low-dissipation information transfer using superconductors. We will also apply our theory to describe the potentially large thermoelectric properties of superconducting orbitronic heterostructures, which is highly relevant in the context of cryogenic caloritronics.

The question of how superconductivity adapts to an environment with non-trivial orbital polarization, both in and out of equilibrium, is an interesting and urgent one which this project aims to answer.

Superconducting orbitronics in hybrid systems

Klimaendringer er et presserende problem, og det er avgjørende å redusere CO2-utslipp. En lovende løsning er å lagre CO2 i geologiske reservoarer, som de salte akviferene i Nordsjøen, som kan holde store mengder CO2 og bidra til å dempe klimaendringene. En viktig fysisk prosess ved geologisk CO2-lagring kalles oppløsningsfanging, der CO2 løses opp i vann og synker når det blir tyngre, en prosess som forsterkes av konvektiv blanding. Dette er viktig fordi det akselererer CO2-lagring og forhindrer lekkasje. Å forstå denne prosessen gjør det mulig å planlegge lagringsoperasjoner bedre. Imidlertid er det utfordrende å modellere denne prosessen nøyaktig på grunn av de komplekse geologiske formasjonene.

TIME4CO2-prosjektet kombinerer avanserte laboratorieeksperimenter, høyoppløselig dataanalyse og innovativ matematisk modellering. Gjennom tett integrasjon av disse er målet å forbedre simuleringsteknologi for CO2-lagring, og sikre nøyaktige forutsigelser av hvordan CO2 oppfører seg i undergrunnen under realistiske forhold. Dette vil bidra til å maksimere CO2-lagring og sikre langsiktig stabilitet.

Geological CO2 storage is a key component of any climate change mitigation strategy for reducing CO2 emissions, highlighted in the latest IPCC report. Geological reservoirs, like saline aquifers in the North Sea, offer vast storage capacities. A central beneficial phenomenon in geological carbon storage and primary focus of the TIME4CO2 project is dissolution trapping enabled by buoyancy-driven convective mixing, both accelerating storage and preventing leakage. As identified in two recent benchmark initiatives, effective and efficient numerical modeling of dissolution taking into account anisotropic dispersion remains a key scientific challenge in computational reservoir modeling. Moreover, previous experimental studies of convective mixing in literature have focused on overly idealized conditions. There remains a lack of high-quality laboratory data of convective mixing in active and heterogeneous aquifers for quantitative model validation.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, combining unprecedented laboratory experiments, high-resolution image-based data analysis, and innovative mathematical modeling, the TIME4CO2 project aims to "advance simulation technology for CO2 storage, capturing spatio-temporal evolution of dissolution processes and convective mixing, validated against high-resolution complex meter-scale laboratory experiments". TIME4CO2 will develop novel efficient numerical methods for multi-phase flow in porous media subject to anisotropic dispersion and convective mixing. The methodology will be validated against meter-scale laboratory CO2 storage experiments with emphasis on reservoir heterogeneity, dynamic injection, and background flow. Quantitative model validation will be performed using physics informed optimal transport metrics. This toolset will allow for probing for maximal CO2 storage and scrutinize timescales central for geological carbon storage from onset of dissolution to stable stratification after reinjection.

Unlocking maximal geological CO2 storage through experimentally validated mathematical modeling of dissolution and convective mixing

Gjennom et revolusjonerende felt innen fysikk kalt todimensjonal (2D) kvantespintronikk. Denne banebrytende forskningen kan forandre måten vi lagrer, behandler og kommuniserer data på, og åpne dørene til nye teknologier som ultraraske kvantedatamaskiner.

Kjernen i dette gjennombruddet er 2D-materialer – ultratynne lag av atomer som oppfører seg på ekstraordinære måter. Nylig oppdaget forskere at noen av disse materialene er magnetiske. Enda mer spennende er at de finnes i forskjellige former: noen er metaller, andre halvledere eller til og med isolatorer. Denne unike kombinasjonen av magnetisme, kvantemekanikk og lavdimensjonal struktur er det som gjør disse materialene så spesielle.

Målet med QTransMag-prosjektet er å utforske og forstå disse 2D-magnetiske systemene bedre. Ved hjelp av avanserte datasimuleringer og teoretiske modeller, har forskerne som mål å avdekke de skjulte egenskapene til disse materialene. De vil fokusere på hvordan ytre påvirkninger som vridning eller strekking av materialene kan føre til nye, eksotiske magnetiske tilstander.

En av de mest spennende mulighetene er å skape "designede" magnetiske faser. Tenk deg å kunne kontrollere egenskapene til et materiale like enkelt som å justere volumet på stereoanlegget ditt. A far-reaching recent breakthrough in spintronics is the discovery of 2D ferro- and antiferro-magnetic materials with
metallic, semiconducting and insulating band structures. The unique advantages presented by the coexistence of
low dimensionality, spin interactions, relativistic spin-orbit coupling, and nontrivial topology in the same material
enable a new era in condensed matter physics, and materials science and pave the way for developing novel
quantum devices with exceptional performance. 2D quantum spintronics offers exciting perspectives in future data
processing and information technology. According to the latest decennial report of the Committee on Frontiers of
Materials Research in the USA, 2D quantum magnetic systems and topological phases are the main directions of
condensed matter physics and materials science in the next decade.
QTransMag's goal is to uncover the exotic properties of novel 2D magnetic systems, propose feasible pathways to
fine-tune these exotic phases, and making properties-on-demand approach.
In QTransMag, we integrate advanced theoretical and sophisticated computational techniques to understand,
control, probe, and excite different magnetic exotic phases in two prototypes of 2D magnetic systems. In low
dimensions, quantum fluctuations and correlations are enhanced thus, to investigate 2D magnetic materials it is
needed to go beyond semiclassical treatment used in spintronics. In this project, using nonequilibrium many body
formalism and quantum field theory techniques, we develop a formalism to compute the ground states and different
exotic phases of a magnetic system under strain and twist. Emergent gauges fields and particular topology of
wavefunctions in different exotic magnetic phases may lead to a signature in transport properties of the system. We
propose these features as a guideline for detecting exotic magnetic phases in 2D quantum systems.

Unconventional Thermoelectric Quantum Transport in Novel 2D Magnetic Heterostructures

GDPR har blitt karakterisert som "den strengeste personvern- og sikkerhetsloven i verden". Praksis viser imidlertid at det er utfordrende å håndheve GDPR. Kravet om livslang håndhevelse av personopplysninger er spesielt sterkt: GDPR bør "reise med dataene", og følgelig følge dataene mens de overføres og behandles. En teknologisk løsning som virker essensiell for å tilfredsstille denne etterspørselen er datasporbarhet. Dette prosjektet fokuserer på tre GDPR-krav --- rett til sletting, formålsbegrensning og rettigheter i forhold til automatisert beslutningstaking og profilering --- og spør om datasporbarhet kan muliggjøre livslang håndhevelse av disse kravene (R1-3) innenfor en felles databehandlingspipeline, under hvilke forutsetninger (inkludert trusselmodellkarakterisering) og kostnad (tid, rom, infrastruktur). For å oppnå dette oppretter vi en tverrfaglig gruppe av CS- og juseksperter for å designe og implementere TracE2E, en tilpassbar mellomvare for ende-til-ende-sporing av data innenfor IoT-applikasjoner. De juridiske medlemmene av gruppen vår vil utføre en juridisk vurdering av det resulterende systemet for å juridisk argumentere for at det håndhever R1-3 under spesifikke forutsetninger. For også å vurdere gjennomførbarheten av håndhevelsen i praksis, vil TracE2E bli portert inn i en eksisterende IoT-applikasjon for å bekjempe fiskerikriminalitet, og kostnadene (tid, plass, programvare og maskinvarebehov) vil bli estimert.

GDPR has been characterized as “the toughest privacy and security law in the world”. However, practice shows that enforcing GDPR is challenging. The demand for its lifelong enforcement on personal data is particularly strong: GDPR should “travel with the data”, and thus, follow the data as it is being transferred and processed. A technological solution that seems essential to satisfy this demand is data traceability. This project focuses on three GDPR requirements---right to erasure, purpose limitation, and rights in relation to automated decision making and profiling---and asks whether data traceability can enable the lifelong enforcement of these requirements (R1-3) within a common data-processing pipeline, under what assumptions (including threat model characterization) and cost (time, space, infrastructure). To achieve this, we create an interdisciplinary group of CS and Law experts to design and implement TracE2E, a customizable middleware for end-to-end traceability of data within IoT applications. The legal members of our group will perform a legal assessment of the resulting system to legally argue that it enforces R1-3 under specific assumptions. To also assess the feasibility of the enforcement in practice, TracE2E will be ported into an existing IoT application for combating fishery crimes, and the incurred cost (time, space, software and hardware needs) will be estimated.

On the Technological (Im)Possibility to Enforce Data Protection Laws

Oppladbare Li-ion-batterier blir stadig mer nødvendige i det moderne samfunnet, og finnes i bærbar elektronikk, elektriske kjøretøy, i tillegg til at de baner vei for et fullt fornybart energinett. Et typisk Li-ion-batteri består av positive (katode) og negative (anode) elektroder adskilt av en flytende elektrolytt som tillater Li-ioner (ladede litiumatomer) å bevege seg mellom dem. 
Den flytende elektrolytten er imidlertid svært brannfarlig og begrenser også bruken av en høykapasitetsanode, slik som rent litium-metall. Dette resulterer i redusert batterikapasitet (dvs. at mobilbatteriet ditt ikke varer like lenge). En åpenbar løsning er å bruke en fast elektrolytt som vil løse mange av disse problemene. Likevel er ikke “åpenbar” det samme som lett…det finnes en avveining mellom ionisk mobilitet/ledningsevne og stabiliteten til et slikt materiale. Som man kan forestille seg, er det vanskeligere å skyve en biljardkule gjennom en murvegg enn gjennom vann – det samme gjelder for atomer. Typisk har faste elektrolytter med svært mobile Li-ioner utfordringer med stabilitet, noe som gjør produksjon og langtidsbruk vanskelig, mens stabile materialer ofte har lav ionisk mobilitet.
“Tuneable and Earth-Abundant Solid-State Electrolytes for Li-ion Batteries” (TEASE) har som mål å løse dette ved å forutsi nye materialer som både er stabile, har høy Li-ion-ledningsevne og består av bærekraftige elementer det finnes store forekomster av i jordskorpa. En måte å oppnå dette på er gjennom bruk av justerbare (tuneable) materialer. Det finnes flere måter å lage slike materialer på, for eksempel: ved å endre krystallstrukturen (måten atomene er ordnet i 3D), indusere atomisk uorden (som skaper nye veier for Li-ioner), doping (tilføre små mengder av andre grunnstoffer), faste løsninger (kombinere to lignende materialer med ulike egenskaper). Å utvikle disse strategiene er avgjørende for å overvinne dagens teknologiske begrensninger, og TEASE-prosjektet akselererer realiseringen av dette.

Li-ion batteries are ubiquitous in modern society due to the advent of portable electronic devices, with ever-increasing demand powered by the transition to electric transportation and a renewable energy grid. The current technology is, however, approaching limitations regarding capacity, high voltages, long-term cyclability as well as concerns surrounding safety. Replacing the liquid electrolyte component in a Li-ion battery with a solid-state electrolyte has the potential to solve these issues. Despite this, high-synthesis costs, poor interfacial contacts, as well as trade-offs between stability and ionic conductivity exist in current solid-electrolyte materials. In this proposal we offer a new generation of Earth-abundant solid electrolytes based on silicon oxynitrates to tackle these problems to realise all solid-state batteries. In addition, tuneability strategies based on defect chemistry and dopability, order/disorder, solid solutions as well as crystalline vs amorphous behaviour will be explored from a fundamental level using state-of-the-art materials simulations. In tuning each aspect of the composition and structure of these materials, the trade-offs and limitations we have come to expect will be mitigated. Experimental verification of promising candidates will be performed alongside the computational work by the project partner: Prof. Daniel Rettenwander at NTNU who has over 11 years of experience working with the synthesis and characterization of solid electrolytes for Li-ion batteries.

Plastics are important for many aspects of our everyday lives, such as food packaging, medicine, and electronics. However, plastic products also contain thousands of chemicals that are released during and after use. For instance, chemicals leaching from packaging can contaminate the food we eat. This is a problem because many chemicals used in plastics can have negative impacts on our health and the environment. Another problem is that plastic products are chemically very complicated, so we do not know all the substances in them. Therefore, we need to understand better how they affect us and the environment.
Governments in Europe and across the world have agreed to reduce the negative impacts of plastics on human health and the environment. One way to do so is to create a circular economy in which plastic materials and products are reused instead of thrown away. Removing toxic chemicals from plastics is an important part of this strategy.
The PlastChem project supports these efforts by summarizing the current scientific knowledge on the chemicals in plastics. The project has produced a report that answers the following questions:
Which and how many substances are used in plastic?
The project collected information on more than 16 000 chemicals that are potentially used or present in plastics and created a database with information on these substances. The chemicals fulfill several functions in plastics and most of them are used as processing aids (to help during manufacturing plastics), additives (to create desired properties), and starting substances (raw materials to make plastics). More than 9 billion tons of plastic chemicals are produced each year on a global scale.
Which chemicals are the most problematic for our health and the environment?
The project identified so-called chemicals of concern in plastics. These are chemicals that are harmful to humans or the environment because they are persistent (do not degrade), bioaccumulate (build up in the body), mobile (spread easily) or toxic (cause damage to wildlife or humans). This information is only available for about one third of all plastic chemicals showing that we do not know whether the rest is safe or not.
More than 4200 plastic chemicals have one or more of these problematic properties and can, therefore, be harmful for humans and/or the environment. Very few of these chemicals are regulated internationally and PlastChem has produced a list of the most concerning chemicals in plastics that should be dealt with. This includes 15 groups of plastic chemicals that are particularly concerning, including bisphenols, phthalates, and PFASs (“forever chemicals”).
In which plastics and products are these chemicals used in?
The PlastChem project then collected additional evidence on which of these chemicals are used in which plastics. The project found that over 1300 problematic chemicals are either sold for being used in plastics or have been detected in plastics in scientific studies. Depending on the plastic material, up to two out of three plastic chemicals used can be of concern. Problematic chemicals can be used or present in all major plastic types (e.g., polystyrene, polyethylene) for which there is enough data. This highlights the need to remove these chemicals from plastic products.
What can be done to remove them?
The report suggests that policymakers take four actions to make plastics safer:
1. Remove problematic chemicals from plastics.
2. Create more transparency on which chemicals are used in which plastics.
3. Produce simpler plastic materials and products that contain fewer chemicals.
4. Help countries, authorities, industries, and scientists to make plastics safer and more sustainable.
Politicians and other decision makers can use this scientific report to tackle the problem of problematic chemicals and make plastic products safer. This will not only promote our transition to a circular economy for plastics but also help to improve the health of the public and of nature.

Despite plastics being widely used in and highly relevant for societies, the knowledge base on their chemical composition and the impacts of plastic chemicals on humans and the environment is fragmented. Accordingly, an authoritative resource that enables evidence-based policy development to better protect public health and nature is missing. The PlastChem project will produce such resource in form of a high-quality state-of-the-art review that synthesizes the scientific evidence on hazardous substances in plastics and prioritize these chemicals and the polymers they are contained in.
To achieve this, the project will consolidate information on >15000 plastic chemicals from existing databases, polymer mass flows, scientific and market data to systematically compile hazard and exposure information on chemicals and polymers. The resulting PlastChem database will be used to group plastic chemicals according to structure and to prioritize groups of chemicals using a weight-of-evidence approach, considering hazard, exposure, and market data. The priority chemicals will be linked to the polymers they are contained in based on empirical evidence (i.e., detection in plastics). In addition, we will evaluate the whole-migrate-toxicity of all chemicals leaching from plastic products, thus, including unknown chemicals and mixture effects. Both will be used to prioritize polymers widespread in society and nature, and relevant for a circular economy. To ensure policy relevance, we will assess and prioritize regulatory needs in close collaboration with the advisory board and other experts. This interaction will also guide the project implementation and ensure that the state-of-the-art review is tailored to the pertinent policy needs.
The review and the PlastChem database as main project outputs will be authoritative resources for developing policies that promote a non-toxic environment in line with the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability and the global plastic treaty.

State-of-the-art review on hazardous substances in plastics (PlastChem project)

This project aims at providing a better understanding of the relationship between the concepts of differentiated integration and consensual democracy, by analysing the evolution of relations between the European Union and Nordic States, especially in the  case of Norway. What kind of European integration is sought by Norway and why? Why did relations between Nordic States and the European institutions evolve in different ways? How do concerns about EU democracy shape the politics of differentiation in the  Nordic Member States? Entitled 'Consociational Democracy and Nordic Differentiated Integration in the European Union', this project precisely aims at giving tentative answers to these questions. A comparison between the five Nordic States is provided. The  existing academic literature on differentiated integration ignores the impact of consensual democracy, adopting a state-centric (or government-centric) position in order to explain differentiated integration. Moreover, theories on differentiated integrat ion have often been applied to existing members of a supranational organisation such as the European Union. Hence, this project also aims at contributing to the literature by taking account of the various aspects of consensual democracies, and by applying  the notion of differentiated integration in the case of Norway and Iceland as non-Member States and EEA / Schengen members. 
Overall, the results obtained will not only be beneficiary for IR officials in government and in partner organisations of the con sidered States by analysing the relations between both parties, but it may also have uses for (non-)members of other regional organisations in understanding how consensual democracies shape differentiated integration.

Consociational Democracy and Nordic Differentiated Integration in the European Union

The model of context analysis proposed in this research project offers a systematic analytical framework for approaching and assessing the role of law in Europe. It differs significantly from 'classical' rationalist, actor-centered, or interest-based expl anatory patterns in the way it takes an internal perspective on European law. From this point of view, the question is no longer about which actors prevail in implementing their interests, or which causal mechanisms are at work in lawmaking, but about the  options and limitations of reasoning and action inherent in a particular context. More concretely, a context analysis concerns itself with how a legal framework, especially the European one, functions; how it changes over time, and how it imposes demands  for reasoning and action on actors, judicial as well as political ones. As a contribution to the current discussion about 'integration through law', the project aims to closely examine a number of currently discussed landmark cases. By doing so, it will  be shown that these decisions can be seen as building blocks in the ongoing legal expansion of European law, and should therefore be highly relevant to the further development Europe's legal order after the 'constitutional compromise.' The premise of a co ntextual approach towards these contemporary jurisprudential developments will be to first draw a convincing picture of the ECJ's role in this process, and second, to shed light on the ongoing constitutionalization that will be of great importance to the  progress of integration in the coming years. For this purpose, the above mentioned legal cases will be contextualized and systematically examined in their historical, functional, and local aspects. The project will be also drawing on a number of interview s the applicant conducted with judges and members of the scientific staff of the ECJ in the spring of 2011.
