I Norge har det vært en økende trend til å benytte regnbueørret (Oncorhynchus mykiss) i oppdrett på grunn av dens raske vekst og toleranse for et bredt spekter av miljøforhold. I dag utgjør regnbueørret 5 % av den årlige produksjon av laksefisk i Norge. Produksjonen har økt med 14 % det siste tiåret, dvs. fra 14453 til 85233 tonn, noe som gjør regnbueørret til den nest mest produserte arten etter atlantisk laks. Til tross for den store interessen er oppdrett av regnbueørret begrenset på grunn av ulike produksjonsutfordringer. Næringen er bl.a avhengig av sesongbasert rognproduksjon. En utfordring er redusert tilgang på rogn i perioden fra juni til oktober, hvilket resulterer i en 5-måneders periode uten tilgang på stor settefisk, fra mars til juni året etter. Videre er forståelsen av hvordan ulike miljøfaktorer initierer og påvirker utviklingen av sjøvannstoleranse dårlig dokumentert. Bl.a. er overføring til sjøvann basert på kroppsstørrelse i stedet for osmoregulatorisk kapasitet. Av den grunn kan settefisken møte ulike helse og velferds utfordringer etter overføring til sjøvann, noe som kan forklare økende dødelighet (rundt 10 %) og høy forekomst av taper fisk (rundt 10 %) i sjøanleggene. Denne utfordringen påfører oppdrettere betydelige økonomiske tap og representerer et velferdsproblem.
I Sande-prosjektet har vi som mål å utvikle nye produksjonsprotokoller for regnbueørret, fra rogn til stor settefisk, basert på optimalisert temperatur, lysrytme og vannkvalitet. En kritisk faktor i prosjektet vil være testing og validering av nye oppdrettsprosedyrer for å kontrollere fiskevekst og utviklingshastighet for å forlenge eller forkorte smoltproduksjonsperioden og tidspunkt for utsetting til sjø. I tillegg vil vi utvikle nye verktøy og analyser for å vurdere smoltkvalitet og tidspunkt for smoltvindu. Denne kunnskapen vil utgjøre en ny biologisk protokoll som tar sikte på å forbedre produksjonen av settefisk av regnbueørret, og som kan leveres til sjøanlegg hele året.

Idéen bak dette prosjektet er å utvikle en sesong uavhengig protokoll (Best Management Practice, BMP) for regnbueørret, fra befruktet rogn til leveringsklar smolt (settefisk), basert på optimalisert temperatur, lysrytme kontroll og styrt vannkvalitet (CO2 nivå), herunder kartlegge konsekvenser på fiskens ytelse, fysiologi, helse og produksjonstid. 
Prosjektet vil innbefatte tre feltforsøk som gjennomføres hos Sande Settefisk. I første forsøk vil effekt av temperatur på tilvekst, helse og kvalitetsutvikling hos regnbueørret i RAS bli kartlagt. Ett sentralt spørsmål vil være; Hvor mye kan vi endre produksjonstiden til ørret i settefiskfasen i vekstintervallet 20 til 400 gr gitt at snitt-temperaturen endres fra 12 til 8?C.  Dette spørsmålet er viktig da en forsinkelse kan benyttes til å dekke perioder hvor oppdretter står uten settefisk som følge av underskudd på egg om våren. Videre vil vi kartlegge hva som er optimalt lysregime under styrt smoltutvikling, herunder gir best smoltkvalitet. Avslutningsvis vil vi undersøke sammenheng mellom variasjon i vannkvalitet (CO2 nivå) på velferd, tilvekst, helse og kvalitet hos regnbueørret. En viktig del av utviklingsarbeidet vil være teste og validere en nyutviklet analyse for vurdering av smoltkvalitet hos regnbueørret (1. Innovasjon). Basert på positive funn og en integrert tolkning av samspillet mellom biologi, drift og vannmiljø, vil vi foreslå analysemetoder og strategier som bedrer fiskens kvalitet og tilvekstpotensial. Kunnskapen vil sammenfattes i en ny biologisk protokoll (BMP, 2. Innovasjon) for optimal sesonguavhengig produksjon av høykvalitets regnbueørret.  I sum vil prosjektet bidra til å sikre en jevn tilgang på settefisk som kan overføres til sjø hele året, og derav styrke oppdrett av regnbueørret i ett bærekraftig fremtidsrettet perspektiv.

Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change risks

Adaptation to climate change requires in-depth understanding of climate change driven risks, including their determinants (hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities) and impacts to human, production and natural systems. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks (IRISCC) is a consortium of diverse and complementary leading research infrastructures (RIs) covering disciplines from natural sciences to social sciences, across different domains and sectors. IRISCC provides scientific and knowledge services to foster cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking to improve Europe's resilience to climate change. IRISCC ensures a “one-stop-shop” for various user communities on climate change risk related RI services by setting up a dedicated Catalogue of services and related access management system both for granting transnational (onsite and remote) and offering virtual access. The Catalogue of services will be built through three consecutive releases, each delivering increasingly integrated services to its user communities. The IRISCC service integration will include Service Design Labs employing co-design and transdisciplinary action, and Service Demonstrators benchmarking the integrated cross-RI services. In addition to services aimed towards the scientific community, IRISCC will offer knowledge services aimed towards policymakers and other stakeholders. This is done together with risk management platforms. The research enabled by IRISCC contributes to future reports on climate change effects (IPCC, IPBES) as well as policy- and decision-making to meet the targets of climate adaptation strategies. IRISCC contributes to training a new generation of scientists to efficiently use RI services and for data stewardship. Data from IRISCC will be open and made available in compliance with FAIR principles and linked to European initiatives such as EOSC. Strong links will be created between IRISCC and current and future efforts under Horizon Europe.

Politics and Security in the Arctic (POPSARC) tar utgangspunkt i to overordnede spørsmål. For det første, hva kjennetegner vestlige alliertes tilnærminger til sikkerhet i Arktis de senere årene? For det andre, hva kjennetegner samspillet mellom disse vestlige allierte i Arktis, innenfor nøkkelområder av sikkerhetspolitikken? Mye forskningslitteratur har i de senere årene sett på Russland og Kinas ambisjoner for og tilstedeværelse i Arktis, samt vestlige aktørers reaksjoner og tilsvar på disse to statenes signaler og opptreden. Mindre oppmerksomhet har blitt viet endringer i dynamikken og samspillet mellom allierte på vestlig side. Her vil POPSARC bidra til å skaffe til veie oppdatert kunnskap.

Prosjektet fokuserer på åtte stater: De syv arktiske statene Norge, Danmark, Island, Finland, Sverige, Canada og USA, samt Storbritannia - som definerer seg som Arktis' nærmeste nabo. Forskningsteamet vil undersøke disse statenes tilnærminger til og samspill i arktiske sikkerhetsspørsmål på tre områder i perioden 2014-2026: Diplomati, militært samarbeid og infrastruktur-styring. Prosjektet trekker på et teoretisk rammeverk hvor ideer om utenrikspolitiske handlingsrepertoar, felleskapsbygging og differensiering står sentralt. Dette rammeverket vil bli brukt til å analysere endringer i diskurs og observerbare samhandlingsspraksiser på de tre områdene. På den måten vil prosjektet gi verdifulle innsikter til forskere, men også beslutningstakere og den opplyste allmennheten.

At a time marked by major international turbulence – war in Europe, the breakdown of established diplomatic fora, the entry of new actors and stakeholders – there is an urgent need for also understanding the approaches of and interaction dynamics between Western allies operating in or near the Arctic. Power Politics and Security in the Arctic (POPSARC) addresses this knowledge need. While there is a rapidly growing body of literature tracing and unpacking the ambitions and actions of Russia and China in the Arctic, and Western actors’ responses to their moves, limited scholarly attention has been given to the (changing) fabric of allied interactions in the region. POPSARC will theorise, trace, and unpack allied interaction patterns in and around the Arctic.

Doing so, the project asks two questions. First, what characterises Western allies’ current approaches to security in the Arctic? Second, how are allied interactions in the Arctic sphere materialising – in statements, strategies, and observable material practices – across key security domains? Zooming in on the time period 2014-2026, the POPSARC team will study Western allies’ approaches to and interaction patterns in Arctic security across three domains: Diplomacy, military collaboration, and infrastructure governance. Theoretically, it will employ a theory framework organised around the concepts of foreign policy repertoires, community-building, and differentiation. Empirically, it combines the study of dominant and alternative representations in official and wider political and discourses, with a study of observable interaction practices in the domains of diplomacy, military collaboration, and infrastructure governance. In terms of output, the project will deliver academic articles, events, talks, popular publications, and social media engagement. Project results will add to the knowledge production on Arctic security, help policy makers arrive at better-informed decisions, and educate members of the public.

Power Politics and Security in the Arctic

Hvordan former etterretning russisk innenrikspolitikk og utenriks- og sikkerhetspolitikk? Dagens Russland karakteriseres ofte som en «KGB-stat». Nåværende og tidligere etterretningsoffiserer, inkludert president Putin, dominerer i økende grad politikk og økonomi, og bringer med seg kultur, verdensbilde, nettverk og metoder som er typiske for russisk etterretning. Dette er godt kjent, men det er lite systematisk og teoretisk basert kunnskap om hvordan etterretning faktisk påvirker russisk politikk. For å endre på dette har RUSINTELSTATE samlet et team av håndplukkede, internasjonale Russland-eksperter innen etterretningsstudier, kulturstudier, samtidshistorie og internasjonale relasjoner. Anglo-amerikanske etterretningsstudier (for ikke å snakke om statsvitenskap og internasjonale relasjoner) ser gjerne på politikk og etterretning som atskilt. Etterretning forstås snevert, som en spesifikk form for kunnskap som skal gi politisk nøytral beslutningsstøtte. Denne normative tilnærmingen er imidlertid dårlig tilpasset Russland, en autoritær, personalistisk stat med en distinkt historie. RUSINTELSTATE, derimot, a) analyserer etterretning i videre forstand, som aktører, aktiviteter og kultur; og b) anerkjenner at etterretning og politikk ikke kan forstås atskilt. Etterretningsaktører (organisasjoner/nettverk) kjemper for innflytelse ved å posisjonere seg politisk. Etterretningsaktiviteter (kunnskapsproduksjon) både påvirker og blir påvirket av politiske vurderinger. Etterretningskultur – hele spekteret fra propaganda-narrativer til dyptfølt ideologi – både former og blir formet av oppfatningene til aktørene. Vi framholder at verken den russiske staten eller dens etterretning kan forstås atskilt. Vårt begrep ‘hybrid etterretningsstat’, som understreker den gjensidige innflytelsen mellom russisk politikk og etterretning, er et bedre redskap til å forstå russisk utenriks- og sikkerhetspolitikk, og gjør oss bedre i stand til å håndtere dens utfordringer mot vår sikkerhet.

How does intelligence shape Russian domestic politics and foreign and security policy? Intelligence is ubiquitous in Russia. Current and former intelligence officers, including President Putin, increasingly dominate politics and economy, bringing with them the culture, world-view, networks, and methods of the Russian intelligence community. This is widely acknowledged, yet how it impacts Russia’s foreign and security policy is still poorly understood by academics. Both intelligence as such and its role in IR remain under-theorized, and research on Russian intelligence is highly compartmentalized. To change this, RUSINTELSTATE enlists a team of carefully selected international Russia experts from the complementing fields of intelligence studies, cultural studies, contemporary history, and IR. Moving beyond the models of ‘the KGB state’ on the one hand and ‘intelligence-as-a-tool’ of the state on the other, we advance the novel theoretical perspective of the Russian Hybrid Intelligence State. This allows for a nuanced and culturally and contextually sensitive approach based on the recognition that neither the Russian state nor its intelligence can be understood in isolation from each other. Contrary to the traditional and often normative notion of intelligence as a specific type of knowledge, we employ a wide definition of (state-centered) intelligence as actors, activities, and culture, which allows us to analyze the different ways in which intelligence and politics influence each other: a) actors (services/networks) vying for influence by positioning themselves; b) activities (knowledge production) that may both be heavily influenced by political considerations and influence these considerations; and c) culture, i.e. both narratives created for propaganda and deep-seated beliefs of the intelligence services, as well as everything in between. This makes us better equipped to understand Russian foreign/security policy, and to deal with its challenges to our security.

The Russian Hybrid Intelligence State

Kan saueavl være viktig får å bekjempe klimaendringer? Svaret er faktisk ja! Grunnen er at sauer produserer metan, en drivhusgass som bidrar til global oppvarming. Hva om vi kunne avle sauer som slipper ut mindre metan? Dette er selve essensen i prosjektet "Sustain Sheep."
I dette internasjonale samarbeidsprosjektet involverer forskere fra ulike land (Irland, Storbritannia, New Zealand, Frankrike, Norge og Uruguay) seg i avansert teknologi kalt Portable Accumulation Chambers (PAC) – mobile klimakamre – for å måle metanutslipp fra sauer. Gjennom disse målingene skal man dykke ned i genetikken bak metanutslipp og fôreffektivitet. Resultatet blir anbefalinger for nye avlsmål for sau for å redusere klimafotavtrykket. Potensialet og kostnadene knyttet til implementering av disse avlsmålene vil også bli grundig vurdert.

I Norge vil data fra Sauekontrollen og en genomisk referansepopulasjon bli utnyttet for å analysere genetikken bak metanutslipp hos sauer. I tillegg vil maskinlæring bli anvendt for å avdekke sammenhengen mellom sauens vekt, fôrinntak og metanutslipp. Det vil videre undersøkes hvor effektivt det er å selektere sauer med lavere metanutslipp ved å bruke en simuleringsmodell, en såkalt digital tvilling, av det norske avlsprogrammet for sau. Avslutningsvis vil effekten av å avle for redusert metanutslipp fra sau på klimagassutslippene per kilo slakt produsert bli beregnet ved hjelp av en gårdsmodell. Effekten på de nasjonale klimagassutslippene vil også bli vurdert.

Breeding can be a cost-effective way of reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions from sheep, by direct selection for CH4 emissions or indirectly through improved productivity. Currently there is under-adoption of these measures as benefits are not captured by the market. Sustain Sheep builds on the successful Joint Call ERA-Net project Grass To Gas and will create infrastructure for incorporation of low environmental impact into national breeding schemes that dovetails into the IPCC inventory. Sustain Sheep is unique as all partner countries (Ireland, United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Norway and Uruguay) have invested in the same CH4 measurement technology (Portable Accumulation Chambers). 
Sustain Sheep will 1) review the current scientific status of the potential to breed sheep for reduced CH4 emissions (WP1), 2) investigate genetics of CH4 emission and feed efficiency and model the mitigation potential from breeding and give recommendations for new breeding goals (WP2), 3)  forecast uptake rates, cost and abatement of breeding for reduced CH4 emissions (WP3) and 4) determine the best mechanism for dissemination and implementation of project result to maximize stakeholder involvement (WP4). 
In Norway, genetic and genomic analyses of data from the Norwegian Sheep Recording System and the genomic reference population recorded for CH4 emission will be done by NSG (WP2.1). Machine learning to investigate  relationships between GHG emission, ewe live weight and feed intake will be applied and validated by NMBU (WP2.2). The expected response to selection for breeding goals including enteric CH4 and/or feed efficiency will be predicted by NMBU using a digital twin of the Norwegian sheep breeding scheme and data from WP2.1, and the effect on emission intensities (kg CO2-equivalents per kg product) will be investigated using a whole-farm model. The impact of alternative breeding goals on GHG emissions at national level will be quantified using IPCC methodology (WP2.3).

Reducing sheep methane emissions: sustainability in practice via new breeding goals

Akvakultur står for halvparten av all fisken som konsumeres av mennesker og har derfor en betydelig role i matforsyningssystemet vårt. Dessverre er denne industrien stadig truet av infeksjonssykdommer, noe som truer både bærekraft, dyreveldferd og matsikkerhet. Å finne vaksiner og terapeutiske løsninger på slike infeksjonssykdommer er av høy prioritet, men vår begrensede forståelse av immunforsvaret til fisken har ført til få gjennombrudd i praksis. Vi har nylig oppdaget et mandel-lignende lymfeorgan, kalt “Nemausean Lymfeorgan (NELO) i Sebrafisk og laks, i gjellehulen en struktur som fungerer som hovedinngangen for patogener og er involvert i mange sykdommer som påvirker opprettsfisk. NELO inneholder mange immunforsvarceller og viser involvering i immunrespons. Denne oppdagelsen foreslår at NELO spiller en viktig rolle i fiskens immunforsvar når den nedkjemper infeksjoner. Hovedmålet med dette prosjektet er å undersøke NELOs rolle i fiskens immunforsvar og utforske muligheter for utvikling av vaksiner i akvakultur. For å oppnå vårt mål vil vi først undersøke nøkkeltrekk ved NELO i den mye studerte Sebrafiske. For dette vil vi bruke avanserte bildeteknikker og teknologier som kan markere immunfunksjon på protein- og RNA-nivå. Vi vil deretter undersøke NELO i laks. I tillegg vil vi i samarbeid med internasjonale partnere studere NELOs innflytelse på immunovervåkning under infeksjoner og vaksiner. Resultatene av dette prosjektet vil utvide vår forståelse av fiskeimmunsystemet, bidra til å håndtere utfordringene med infeksjonssykdommer i akvakultur og på lang sikt gi nye innsikter inn i menneskers helse.

Aquaculture faces major challenges posed by infectious diseases. Despite the importance of these issues, our knowledge of fish immunology, which is a crucial defense against infections and the foundation of vaccination strategies, is surprisingly limited. This is especially true concerning the branchial cavity region, even though it represents a major portal of entry for pathogens. We recently used the well-developed zebrafish model to explore the lymphoid organization of the gills and their surrounding tissues. We recently discovered a new mucosal lymphoid organ interconnected with the gill immune network, which we named the Nemausean Lymphoid Organ (NELO). We found that NELO is composed of numerous immune cells (T cells, B cells, and antigen-presenting cells) embedded in a complex network of supporting cells. Whereas it lacks key markers of primary lymphoid organs, it displays several other features of secondary lymphoid organs. Interestingly, the NELO of Salmon shows the same 3D organization, interconnections with gills, and abundance of T cells as the zebrafish NELO. The aim of this project is to determine the function of NELO and its relevance for fish diseases and vaccines. We will use the zebrafish and salmon models in a comparative and cost-effective approach. First, we will precisely define key features such as its entire cell composition, and functions; for this we will combine high-resolution 3D multiplex immuno-histology (immunofluorescence microscopy / in situ hybridization), single-cell RNA sequencing, and functional assays. Major findings in zebrafish will be compared to the investigations in salmon. Then, with collaborators from a European consortium (NucNanoFish), we will inspect antigen-sampling and immune reactions from NELO upon exposure to different diseases and vaccine treatments. Collectively, our data will greatly enhance our understanding of the fish immune system and be important for the aquaculture industry.

New advances in fish immunology: Characterization of a newly discovered lymphoid organ and its involvement in immune responses.

Invasiv bakterieinfeksjon utgjør en betydelig trussel globalt, med de høyeste forekomstene i lavinntektsland. Økningen i infeksjoner forårsaket av antibiotikaresistente bakterier rammer disse landene spesielt hardt, da resistente bakteriestammer ofte har en mer utbredt sirkulasjon her sammenlignet med i mer velstående nasjoner. En utfordring som ofte oppstår i ressursknappe omgivelser er mangelen på kostnadseffektive og pålitelige diagnostiske verktøy, noe som i sin tur begrenser muligheten til å bruke antibiotika riktig.

I forsøket på å adressere denne problematikken, har vårt prosjekt satt seg som mål å utvikle CRISPR-baserte teknologier for rask diagnostisering av de mest fremtredende bakterielle patogener som forårsaker alvorlige infeksjoner i ulike geografiske områder. Vårt internasjonale prosjektteam samler ekspertise fra fire institusjoner: Angkor Hospital for Children (Kambodsja), Mahosot Hospital (Laos), Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (Thailand) og Universitetet i Oslo (Norge).

CRISPR-teknologien gir oss muligheten til å utvikle molekylære tester som oppnår tilsvarende følsomhet og spesifisitet som andre molekylære metoder, som for eksempel PCR. Det unike er at våre tester er raskere og kan utføres i en enkel lateral strømningsdipstikk, noe som eliminerer behovet for kostbart laboratorieutstyr. Dette gjør teknologien svært godt egnet for bruk i klinikker i ressursknappe områder, som ofte mangler sofistikert utstyr.

Vårt mål er å bidra til forbedret folkehelse i lavinntektsland ved å muliggjøre bedre diagnose og behandling av bakterielle infeksjoner, med den langsiktige virkningen av redusert dødelighet som følge.

Invasive bacterial infections are a major cause of mortality and morbidity globally, with the highest disease burden in low-and-middle-income-countries (LMICs). Rise of infections from antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria is disproportionately affecting public health in these countries, given their wider dissemination in the populations of LMICs compared with richer countries. Rapid, accurate and affordable diagnostics are often lacking in the resource-poor settings, which hampers empirical therapy and attempts to improve antibiotic stewardship. To circumvent these obstacles, we will devise rapid clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based assays for identification of pathogen and/or antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for regionally and globally dominant causes of morbidity and mortality by bacterial infections. CRISPR technology enables the development of molecular assays that have performance characteristics similar to other molecular tests (e.g. PCR) in terms of sensitivity and specificity, but which are more rapid to perform and can be in lateral flow dipstick format to remove the need for expensive equipment. This is ideal for use in resource-limited settings typical to many LMIC clinics. We have assembled a multidisciplinary team to maximize our potential by including expertise on all aspects of the problem: 1. clinical practice in LMICs, 2. first-hand experience in CRISPR-based and other molecular methods for test development and evaluation, 3. population genomics and bioinformatics for target selection and optimization. We will focus on multiple major bacterial pathogens: Burkholderia pseudomallei, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The RADICAL project has considerable potential to improve future public health in LMICs by improving therapy choices and reducing the mortality and morbidity from bacterial infections.

Rapid diagnosis of key aetiologies of sepsis and associated infections in LMICs using CRISPR-based assays

REGULAR AND UNPLANNED CARE ADAPTIVE DASHBOARD FOR CROSS–BORDER EMERGENCIES

During cross-border health emergencies, health and care services may be overwhelmed by high numbers of patients requiring unplanned care. Delays and backlogs in regular care, as a result of the stretched health care system, leave millions of patients with regular care needs unattended, resulting in disastrous healthcare outcomes. If poor healthcare outcomes across the population are to be avoided, healthcare systems must become more resilient and flexible and allow for rapid changes in the care delivery services. RAPIDE’s aim is to develop, validate and demonstrate a portfolio of powerful tools that enable healthcare systems to build in robustness of decisions, resilience of the health care professionals and patients and flexibility in the modalities of care delivery, thereby maintaining access to regular care during health emergencies. 

RAPIDE emphasises opportunities for optimising in-hospital care, but also for relocating care from hospitals to community and home environments without loss of care quality. Thus, the project focuses on two closely-linked challenges – 1: Identifying and predicting how much care, and which care, needs to be moved along the care chain; 2: Identifying and verifying effective, feasible and acceptable ways to make this reconfiguration of care a reality. This will be achieved by (a) resource modelling, which builds comprehensive foresight and forecasting solutions and links them to patient flows optimization, along the whole chain of care, (b) selecting and implementing the best available tools to deliver regular care in new ways. To ensure usability, acceptability and equitable real-world value, RAPIDE will be co-designed and co-validated with stakeholders, from patients, GPs, clinicians and hospital managers to health ministries, pandemic-management and public health agencies. A Table Top Exercise and extensive communication and dissemination will raise awareness of the project’s successes.

Transition to safe & sustainable food systems through new & innovative detection methods & digital solutions for plant-based products derived from new genomic techniques, under a co-creation approach

DARWIN aims to contribute to a fair, healthy, safe and environmentally friendly food system by co-developing an innovative detection strategy by integrating targeted analytical PCR-based methods, untargeted sequencing methods, and digital solutions. A new generation of innovative and reliable DNA-based analytical detection methods, ranging from enhanced PCR methods for NGT detection, identification and quantification in single and multi-target systems, to untargeted sequencing methods related to whole-genome sequencing, laser capture microdissection-based sequencing and high throughput metagenomics sequencing for NGT screening and characterization. DARWIN will bring a cutting-edge approach developing genetic fingerprints using artificial intelligence to overcome challenges related to event-specific targeted methods, unambiguously identifying specific NGT lines. DARWIN also brings innovation in the new application of digital solutions such as data spaces and documentation-based screening to increase the data evidence to NGTs; blockchains to enable transparent and traceable detection along the food chain; AI models; and a Decision Support System to improve accuracy and support the selection of the best fit for purpose detection methods. DARWIN will reach TRL4-5 though validation including in-house, transferability and full trials, and presenting 3 cases representative of real situations relevant for NGT products in the EU agri-food market. After methods validation and the definition of a clear oriented detection strategy, DARWIN will theoretically extrapolate its finding to more complex scenarios encountering the diversity of NGT lines and food products that might reach EU markets. All this, under an interdisciplinary co-creation ecosystem based on Responsible Research and innovation (RRI) principals, empowering a wide variety of stakeholders - including consumers - in Europe and internationally; and robustly contributing to the policy making.

Interoperable applications suite to enhance European identity and document Security and fraud detection

Combatting frauds on identity and travel documents is a key mission of law enforcement agencies and border guards. Industries have been working on new means to combat frauds on identity, and public authorities are using numerous technologies to accomplish their mission, but permanent innovation is required to fight highly skilled defrauders. A number of European innovation projects have tested new ways to combat fraud but few of them reached an operational level.
EINSTEIN objectives is to enhance significantly existing public authorities’ means through innovation, building on technologies proven in the labs but not mature for an operational usage yet. EINSTEIN will deliver six applications essential to fight identity frauds: 1) online ID issuance using a secure cloud-based server for real-time biometric quality checks and fraud detection, 2) mobile document and identity checks using commercially available smartphones, 3) document authentication module to detect fraudulent documents, 4) pre-registration for land-border crossings including biometrics and DTC, 5) EES kiosk with advanced fraud detection using video surveillance, 6) fast track for enrolled travelers using on-the-move face and iris. To ensure TRL7 at a minimum, practitioners will run six different pilot use cases in their own environment. A key objective is also to ensure interoperability and flexibility of all the components developed in the project so that they can be reused in different contexts, possibly by different providers. Design of open, well-defined, standardized interfaces will allow achieving this objective.
Privacy being an essential concern of all European citizens and governments, EINSTEIN will take into account privacy-by-design principles, developing flexible components to ease their customization in order to meet not only the European legislation on data protection but also national legislations on this matter, which vary significantly from one country to the other.

NorBOL (Norwegian Barcode of Life) er den nasjonale forskningsinfrastrukturen for DNA-strekkoding i Norge. Infrastrukturen koordineres av NTNU Vitenskapsmuseet i Trondheim og har fire konsortiepartnere i tillegg til NTNU: Universitetsmuseet i Bergen, Naturhistorisk museum i Oslo, Norges arktiske universitetsmuseum i Tromsø og Centre for Biodiversity Genomics ved Universitetet i Guelph, Canada. Samtidig er NorBOL et nettverk av 17 norske forskningsinstitusjoner som jobber sammen mot et mål om å tilby et DNA referansebibliotek for alle norske arter og utvikle verktøy for DNA-basert artsidentifisering. NorBOL er en regional node i International Barcode of Life (iBOL) der koordinatoren representerer Norge i den vitenskapelige styringsgruppen. NorBOL har nådd alle målene som ble satt for etableringsfasen i prosjektet. Ved utgangen av 2021, var rundt 141 000 individer av 26 700 arter tatt prøver av og sendt til DNA analyse. Med en gjennomsnittlig suksessrate på 85% er det nå rundt 22 600 arter fra Norge som har en DNA referansesekvens i Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD). Partnerne i NorBOL har aktivt kommunisert resultater fra brukt av infrastrukturen på konferanser, i vitenskapelige artikler, kronikker, sosiale media og i blogginnlegg. Bidrag fra partnere til undervisning på universitetsnivå og i ulike kurs og workshops er betydelig. I 2019 var NTNU Vitenskapsmuseet sammen med NorBOL og Artsdatabanken vertskap for den åttende internasjonale konferansen om DNA-strekkoding i Trondheim.

Our world is facing a biodiversity crisis. Species are threatened with mass extinction, while probably more than 80% of all species on Earth are unknown to science. Hence, there is an urgent need to find new ways to accelerate the processes of describing,  identifying and protecting species. DNA barcoding is a powerful new tool that promises to speed up the identification of known species and the discovery of new ones. The method is based on a simple premise, that each species can be identified by a short  standardized gene region, a DNA barcode. A DNA barcode library of species will have enormous scientific and practical applications for all human activities that require species identifications (e.g. food safety, pathogens) and be central for sustainable d evelopment in our society. The major challenge at this stage is to build the barcode library. The International Barcode of Life (iBOL) project was launched in September 2010, with the goal of assembling 5 million barcodes representing 500 000 species by t he end of 2015. NTNU University Museum is leading the Norwegian barcoding initiative (NorBOL), a network of 16 biodiversity institutions in Norway aiming to build a distributed national infrastructure for DNA barcoding with the goal to barcode 100 000 spe cimens of 20 000 species from Norway and the Arctic region within five years. All species will be represented by voucher specimens in natural history museum collections and identified by taxonomic experts. Data will be made freely available in the interna tional DNA barcode database (BOLD) and linked to other web-resources for species information (GBIF, Encyclopedia of Life, GenBank, etc). Through the involvement in this large-scale international research enterprise, Norway will contribute significantly to  the global effort of characterizing the world's biodiversity and provide new innovative tools for its discovery, management and conservation.

T-mmune har 'designet', fremstilt og renset rekombinant interferon gamma (IFN) og tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) fra laks i bakterielle ekspresjonssystemer. Dertil har det blitt designet og fremstilt peptider fra TNFa, IFN samt CD3. Disse rekombinante protein-antigener og peptider har sammen med tidligere produsert rekombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2) blitt brukt som immunisat for immunisering av mus og påfølgende fremstilling av monoklonale antistoffer som planlagt. Det har blitt fremstilt polyklonale museanstistoffer mot alle de angitte antigenene. Monoklonale antistoffer har blitt lagd mot TNFa, IFN og IL-2. Så langt har vi ikke lyktes med monoklonalt antistoff mot den ekstracellulære delen av CD3 som ellers var planlagt. Mens monoklonalene mot TNFa og IL-2 er lovende, har de hittill produserte monklonaler mot IFN dessverre vært av immunoglobulin isotypen M (IgM) - noe som gjør dem mindre velegnede i en rekke analysemetoder.
Som planlagt har de ny monoklonale antistoffer blitt testet i diverse immunologiske teknikker slik som ELISA, immunhisto- og cytokjemi, western blot men viktigst i flow cytometriske metoder. To publikasjoner om hhv IL-2 og TNFa antistoffene er under utarbeidelse.
Det pågår arbeid med å isolere og karakterisere T-celler - bla. ved bruk av et CD8 antistoff som brukes i magnet-basert isolering av CD8-positive T-celler. Vi er i en innledende fase mht utvikling av NGS-sekvensering av de isolerte T-cellene, herunder sekvensering av isolerte enkelt-celler.

Efficacious and safe vaccines are the ideal measure of preventive disease control, also in aquaculture. Such vaccines however, are not available for a number of important fish pathogens and prospects of their development are hampered by lack of informatio n about piscine adaptive immunity and T cells in particular. Vaccination by principle is a manipulative approach and firm knowledge about the object of manipulation - the immune system - is thus of fundamental importance.
The present project will characte rise the basic biology of T cells in Atlantic salmon and establish parameters for cellular protection, facilitating rational design of vaccines against important viral pathogens.
To achieve this, a number of essential reagents and experimental systems wil l be developed and evaluated, including recombinant proteins, (monoclonal) antibodies and T cell cultures. T cells will subsequently be characterised in substantial detail by advanced molecular methods such as deep-sequencing, DNA chips and single-cell RT -PCR. It is in particular an aim to develop cellular in vitro assays based on multi-channel flow cytometry that allow a functional evaluation of the quality of T cell based immunity. In small-scale experiments, vaccines and vaccine strategies known to be  (more) efficacious will be evaluated regarding 'T cell quality' and compared with vaccines having low(er) efficacy. By determining what characterises a protective T cell response to a given pathogen, it will be possible to design vaccines that aim at indu cing the same advantageous state.

Protection against intracellular pathogens - T-cell based immunity and vaccines

The aim of the present Project Establishment Support application is to establish collaboration between important research communities in the USA and Norway. The collaboration will initially manifest itself as a joint research project application to the No rwegian Research Council, aiming to address important issues in basic and applied fish immunology and vaccinology.
