The vision of CNC is to understand the neural basis of high-level computation in cortical systems of the brain. For 2021, we wish to emphasize the following discoveries and developments from CNC:

Two advances were made in the Moser group. They participated in developing a new generation of Neuropixels probes and used these probes to record the joint activity of large populations of entorhinal grid cells, finding that the cells? activity resides on a manifold with the shape of a torus. They also developed large-scale recording from portable 2-photon miniscopes, which will revolutionize neural imaging in freely behaving animals. 

The Whitlock lab leverages advanced tracking methodologies to study how sensory and motor cortical systems encode animal behavior in 3D. They began efforts to incorporate tracking of the face, eyes and whiskers, aiming to study how sensory processing guides ongoing behavior. Beyond building the new experimental framework, the group published a novel tool for reconstructing neuroanatomical features and electrode tracks in 3D.

It is often believed that biological neural networks operate sub-optimally and that memory capacity of networks employing biological learning rules are lower than optimal artificial algorithms. The Roudi group showed that this is an artefact of models of biological learning that have unrealistic assumptions. They also showed that space coding is task dependent, and that the level of adaptively changes from area to area.

The Yaksi lab investigates how sensory information is integrated, processed, and modulated in the Zebrafish brain. They showed that experience-dependent plasticity modulates ongoing activity of olfactory circuits and enhances odor representations. They also found that ongoing habenular activity is driven by a forebrain network and that an astroglial glutamate transporter plays a role in regulating excitability associated with seizures.

The Witter group focuses on normal circuitry in rodent entorhinal cortex and circuit changes in early Alzheimer?s disease (AD). They showed that entorhinal subdivisions differ in the intrinsic organization of layer V output routes. AD research indicated a functional interaction between two proteins in layer II neurons, likely relevant for disease initiation.

The Kentros lab generates highly anatomical specific molecular genetic tools. They investigated the roles of distinct entorhinal inputs to the hippocampal cortex circuit via electrophysiology and calcium imaging, uncovering the role played by entorhinal inputs in network oscillations. They also showed that the pathological interactions between Amyloid-beta and Tau in AD are likely to occur in the stellate cells of the entorhinal cortex.

The Doeller group aims to understand mechanisms in the human brain underlying higher-level cognition such as episodic memory or spatial navigation. They proved a link between spatial behavior and context-specific signals in the hippocampus, with evidence of a separation of memory from non-memory factors. This confirms that a critical function of the hippocampus is to represent contextual information that guides behavior. 

Four new research groups were established in 2021:

The Navarro Schröder group integrates functional neuroimaging, eye tracking and virtual reality to answer questions about neural computations that allow us to find our way and remember locations and events. Using diffusion-weighted MRI and structural connectivity analyses, they discovered the likely location of the human homologues of the rodent MEC and LEC regions, important for translational studies on spatial navigation and AD. 

The Ziaei group investigates neural mechanisms underlying emotional processes in aging and explore factors protecting from mood disorders in late adulthood. They showed how aging impacts structural and functional brain circuitries involved in empathy. They also embarked on a clinical trial to investigate whether and how exercised blood may have a rejuvenating impact on cognitive functions and brain networks. 

The Quattrocolo group focuses on how different types of neurons contribute to the maturation of cortical circuits, in particular of the hippocampal region. A major focus is to understand the role of hippocampal Cajal-Retzius cells in postnatal development. They established new lines of research integrating several cutting-edge techniques, such as anatomical tracing with viral vectors, synaptosomes isolation, and transcriptome. 

The Nigro group aims to describe cortical computations underlying object recognition across sensory modalities, using electrophysiological recordings from different brain regions with Neuropixels probes in head-fixed mice. They also aim to unveil the role of different cell types in cortical computations and have discovered a new GABAergic population in the perirhinal cortex, highlighting a novel biogeography of cell types in the mouse cortex.

The most challenging goal of neuroscience is to understand how subjective experience arises out of distributed electrical activity in the brain. Neuroscientists have uncovered striking correlations between behaviour and neural activity but the distributed and interleaved nature of neural representations has prevented insight into the underlying computational operations. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) scheme of the Research Council of Norway (RCN) provides a one-time opportunity to set up a research programme of the magnitude and continuance required to identify these mechanisms. I propose to develop the Centre for Neural Computation (CNC) to pioneer the extraction of computational algorithms from the mammalian cortex. We shall use our recent discovery of grid cells as an access ramp. Because the matrix-like firing of these cells is generated within the brain, independently of specific sensory features, grid cells provide unprecedented access to coding in high-end cortices. I have assembled an expert team that comes together at CNC to decipher the fundamental codes of the space circuit - the mechanisms by which signals from grid cells and other cells are generated, transformed, stored and retrieved by local and global network operations. The timing would be optimal because a wide spectrum of large-scale cell type-specific recording technologies will become available through NORBRAIN, an RCN-funded national infrastructure that less than 6 months after its opening is emerging as one of the world's largest assemblies of equipment for advanced neural circuit analysis. The research plan will be accompanied by the foundation of a national research school and the first PhD programme on neural circuits in Norway. The consequences of understanding the brain at the algorithmic level are diverse and far-reaching, spanning from the diagnosis and prevention of a wide range of neurological and psychiatric diseases to the implementation of brain algorithms in tomorrow's computers.

En av de største utfordringene i moderne nevrovitenskap er å finne ut hvordan subjektiv erfaring oppstår ut fra elektrisk aktivitet i hjernen. Hjerneforskere har oppdaget slående korrelasjoner mellom atferd og nevral aktivitet men fordi nevrale representasjoner er distribuerte, har det vært vanskelig å oppnå innsikt i de underliggende beregningsoperasjonene. Forskningsrådets ordning for Fremragende Forskning representerer en unik anledning til å sette opp et forskningsprogram med den størrelse og varighet som trengs for å idenfisere slike mekanismer. Vi foreslår å opprette Centre for Neural Computation (CNC) for å lede an i avdekkingen av nevrale algoritmer i hjernebarken til pattedyr. Som innfallsport vil vi bruke gittercellene i entorhinal cortex, som vi oppdaget i 2005. Gitterceller er på mange måter målestokken i hjernens kartsystem. Fordi gittercellenes matriselignende aktivitetsmønster genereres inne i hjernen, uavhengig av innkommende sensoriske signaler, gir disse cellene oss en unik anledning til å beskrive prinsipper for nevral koding i høyere-ordens assosiasjons-hjernebark. Vi har samlet en gruppe eksperter for å identifisere de fundamentale kodene i hjernens kartsystem og for å avsløre mekanismene for dannelse og omdannelse av gitterceller og andre celler ved hjelp av lokale og globale nettverksoperasjoner. Tidspunktet for opprettelsen av et slikt senter er optimalt siden et vidt spektrum av storskala celletype-spesifikke registreringsteknologier har blitt tilgjengeliggjort gjennom NORBRAIN, en Forskningsrådsfinansiert nasjonal infrastruktur som 6 måneder etter innvielsen framstår som en av verdens største samlinger av utstyr for avansert nevral nettverksanalyse. Forskningsplanen ledsages av etableringen av en nasjonal forskerskole og det første PhD-programmet for nevrale kretser og nevral nettverksberegning i Norge. Implikasjonene av å forstå hjernen på et algoritmisk nivå er vidtrekkende og spenner fra tidlig diagnose og behandling av en rekke nevrologiske og psykiatriske sykdommer til utvikling av hjerne-computer-grensesnitt og implementering av nevrale algoritmer i fremtidens datamaskiner.
