Mineral content in plants and mineral supply for ruminants in organic agriculture

Tildelt: kr 7,7 mill.

It is essential to have reliable knowledge about the mineral content of fodder from organic agriculture to ensure animal welfare. Today, such knowledge is lacking. The objective of this program is to investigate and evaluate the mineral supply, for rumina nts in organic farming systems with minimum purchase of fodder in various districts, and develop methods to optimise the mineral supply. The program will: - Increase expertise on mineral supply for ruminants in organic farming systems - Identify important causes of possible imbalances in the mineral supply for ruminants on organic farms - Identify important factors that determine the level and variation of mineral content in herbage on organic farms - Obtain an improved basis for recommendations on feedin g and cultivation practises adjusted to local needs for ruminants on organic farms. The investigation will be a combination of a survey of the mineral content in the herbage on approximately 50 organic farms with cows or sheep, and more specific studies on the macrominerals P, S and Mg and the microminerals Se, Co and Cu. Actual mineral levels will be described, and possible improvements in feeding and cultivation related to mineral nutrition will be investigated.
