WIWIC - Radio design principles for low-cost terminals and base stations of wideband wireless communications

Tildelt: kr 7,0 mill.

Broadband full-time access to the backbone communications network will be usual in the near future. Wireless access methods will offer easy installation and will be an important access method for the broadband access network. This project will address th e technology needed by service providers and manufacturers to succeed in the new market with emphasis on radio frequency hardware (antennas, RF electronics). Innovation as well as adaption of existing design methods in the RF part of the equipment are cru cial for the industry to plan the networks and to be able to supply users terminals and other equipments to the future wireless access networks. The possibility for diversity reception at low-cost terminals depends on the RF properties of the antenna(s) and will be investigated based on analysis/simulation of promissing antenna configurations. Microwave electronics will be major cost elements for the terminals and innovative designs will be studied. Linearizers for the output amplifier will be studied. Oscillators are also critical components with respect to cost and power consumption and will be studied to obtain a better understanding of the phase noise generation and methodsto predict and control the noise.
