Virological investigations on emerging disease conditions in domestic animals and fish

The strategic programme on "Virological investigation on emerging disease conditons in domestic animals and fish" aims to co-ordinate research activities in veterinary virology on a broad basis that includes studies on viruses infecting both farmet mammal s and fish. The programme will establish network in fish and animal virology. The scientific competence in veterinary virology will be increased through the recruitment of three doctoral students and two researchers. The research activities will include: i) studies on circovirus in pigs and its role as possible disease agent, ii) studies on lentiviruses of small ruminants with emphasis on caprine arthritis-encephalitits virus (CAEV), iii) studies on infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) in Atlantic salmon with emphasis on the interaction of virus and its target cells, iv) characterization of the im mune mechanisms against virus infection in fish, and v) studies on salmon pancreas disease virus (SPDV) with emphasis on viral characterization and impr oved methods for detection of virus.
