Bacillus cereus, Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus thuringiensis: comparative genomics and functional analysis

Tildelt: kr 9,9 mill.

This project aims at advancing the current state of the art by: 1) Revealing the control mechanisms for expression of PlcR, to clarify whether additional factors are involved in transcriptional control of the PlcR-regulated genes and of plcR itself, to identify additional genes under PlcR regulation and investigate wh ether the B. anthracis plcR mutation offers and explanation for the observed differences in phenotypic properties (non-haemolytic, non-motile). 2) Providing a comprehensive understanding of the genetic basis for the virulence of the B.cereus group of organisms by identifying hitherto unknown virulence genes, and analysing their function and regulation. 3) Performing a comprehensive inestigation on the contribution of plasmid borne elements to virulence or other important phenotypic properties in the B. cereus group, potential for horizontal transfer of genetic material. 4) Providing knowledge about which strains of B. thuringiensis are less closely related to the toxic strains of the B. cereus group members and therefore most appropriate for use as bio pesticides. The very close relationship between B. cereus and B. thu ringiensis makes it essential to be able to distinguish between safe strains and those that produce enterotoxins. This is particularly important since B. thuringiensis is produced and used as a biopesticide in Europe.
