LLNW: Physics/Biology Based Approach to Satellite Monitoring of Primary Production and Algae Blooms, Dr.gr.stip.

Tildelt: kr 3,9 mill.

Project summary: In Norway's vast territorial economic zone, commercial fisheries and aqua-culture industry contribute substantially to the nation's export. But in recent years the aqua-culture industry has suffered major economic losses due to toxic algal blooms. Also in the development of tourism, Norway portrays itself as a country with clean unpolluted water. Thus, the monitoring of coastal water quality is of very high societal relevance to Norway. Monitoring the environmental conditions and resources of Norwegian co astal water in a cost-effective manner requires the use of satellite data in order to get the temporal and spatial coverage that is necessary to follow an algal bloom. Therefore, we propose to continue the development of our novel physics/biology-based ap proach to optical remote sensing of Norwegian coastal waters. This approach is based on a unique forward radiative transfer model for the coupled atmosphere ocean system and global optimisation methods. We propose to: 1) Further develop an existing forward radiative transfer model. 2)Extend and improve an existing inverse-modelling algorithm. 3)Perform a series of research cruises in two selected areas with the dual purpose of generating data necessary for algorithm de velopment, and for validation of retrievals from satellite data.
