As part of the EU-funded project "Catalyst development for catalytic flash pyrolysis producing promising liquid bio-fuels" SINTEF will carry out development (synthesis and characterisation) of modified mesoporous materials as catalysts for the conversion of wooden biomass.
The EU-funded project has seven partners from six countries and will work with catalyst development and testing for production of flash pyrolysis oils with improved qualities like less oxygen and water and increased content of hydroca rbons and valuable chemicals.
SINTEF has a long experience in the preparation of such materials with respect to hydrocarbon conversion, including the synthesis of thermal and hydrothermal stable composite porous materials. The mesoporous materials will b e modified with respect to the oxidative enzymic or other type of degradation of wooden biomass by immobilisation ofan active catalyst component in the pore walls of the catalyst.
The project will be an integrated part of the EU-funded project with the a im of designing a reactor for production of flash pyrolysis oils with improved qualities (stable and with less oxygen and water content), run and optimise the reactor with the catalyst materials included. Measurements of the fuel oil qualities and further test the oils in a standard industry boiler will be performed.
In the boiler combustion tests of the oils will be performed and measurements atomisation characteristics, combustion efficiency and emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and n itrous oxides will be done.
