Prosjektnummer:

Prosjektperiode:

2002 - 2007

Fagområder:

An Applied Bioinformatics Unit (ABU) will be established at the University of Bergen. The aim is to build on and complement existing bioinformatics activities at UoB in order to create a strong environment for research, training and education and to serve as a technology platform for functional genomcis research in the FUGE programme. ABU will provide applied bioinformatics recourses by way of internet-based services as well as by hosting courses and visiting scientists in its facility. ABU will initially have two, preferably three, research groups. The unit will have a core infrastructure of computers and technical staff and it will be physically located near the existing Bioinformatics group and molecular biology environment in the same building. ABU will be affiliated with the Centre for Computational Science in the Bergen University Research Foundation (Unifob), headed by a Director of Research and supported by an international Scientific Advisory Committee. Each research group will train pre- and post-doctoral scientists and conduct independent research devoted to development and implementation of methods and database resources for applied bioinformatics research. It is expected that part of this research will be intimately linked with ongoing research in functional genomics both in Bergen and elsewhere in Norway. A major aim for ABU is to come in position, within four years, to apply for continued funding as a Centre of Excellence.
