Radiolarians: molecular phylogeny and an online information system

Tildelt: kr 1,5 mill.

In all paleoclimatic and stratigraphic studies a firm taxonomy is of great importance. To ensure this we see a need for more efficient ways of storing, accessing and exchanging taxonomic data between researchers. This can be done by using online databases with a web interface. Radiolaria.org, an example of such a web-database, contains taxonomic information about radiolarian species as well as more general information about radiolarians. This prosject aims to build up the database with images, descriptions, synonyms, references of Quarternary to Recent radiolarian species from four important areas in paleoclimatic research: North Atlantic, Nordic Seas, Arctic- and Antarctic Ocean. The second goal for this project is to improve the understanding of the phylogeny of living radiolarians, the natural relation between species and higher radiolarian taxa, based on DNA analysis. We will focus on the family Actinommidae, being present in o ur fjord systems with 5 genera and 12 species. The reconstruction of a phylogenetic tree for the family Actinommidae, based on gene sequencing data, will demonstrate if this tree is branching or grouping the analyzed species similarly or differntly, approving or rejecting the exactness of the presentl y used taxonomy based on morphology.
