Nuclear program in health and disease - transcriptome approach to mechanisms

A central theme in the post-genomic era is to understand the fine-tuned symphony of gene expression. Transcription is the first and critical step of molecular events that turns the genome into a functional genome and weaves together target genes in coreg ulated cellular programs. In fact, many neoplasias and developmental disorders have been linked to aberrant expression of a single transcription factor, which ultimately leads to the deregulation of numerous target genes. We now have the possibility to better understand how nuclear factors and transcription controls genome-wide networks of co-regulated genes. The invention of microarrays for gene expression profiling, combined with access to genome sequence data, has made this leap possible. Decipheri ng programs of gene expression will also have implications for our molecular elucidation of, e.g., cancer, as cell growth is intimately linked to regulation of transcription. The joint establishment of this technology by four groups at University of Oslo sharing interest in nuclear processes, will create a fruitful synergy and allow the research groups to rapidly contribute to this important aspect of functional genomics.
