Cost-effective use of fibre material for wood-containing printing paper

Tildelt: kr 10,8 mill.

The project consists of three sub-projects related to optimization of fibre furnishes. The goal of SP 1 (Refining of pine) is to achieve a combination of fibre quality and specific energy consumption allowing pine to be used as raw material for high quali ty printing paper. Different pine assortments will be used. The techniques for chip pre-treatment and extractive removal by washing will build on the knowledge developed at PFI. The challenge of SP 2 (Co-refining of different wood species) is to find refi ning conditions yielding an optimal balance of strength and optical properties for the co-refined furnish (hardwood and softwood), and provide an overall improvement of crucial pulp properties compared to conventional spruce TMP. Major variables are pre-treatment of chips, process temperature and refining intensity. Blends of pine and spruce chips will also be refined, the former ones have to be pre-treated, based on the results from SP 1. The purpose of SP 3 (Optimization of fibre f urnish blends for improved quality of news, LWC and SC paper) is to achieve synergistic effects of tailormade furnish blends for the quality improvement of wood containing printing paper grades.
