CO2 sequestration in aquifers - Experimental studies on mineral trapping

Tildelt: kr 2,0 mill.

Sequestration of CO2 in subsurface geologic formations involves a large number of processes, and there is a need for multidisciplinary studies to understand and document the interaction of processes. However, mineral trapping will be the final storage of CO2 given sufficient time. Due to the high carbonic acid concentration, the silicate minerals will dissolve incongruently, giving rise to precipitation of secondary minerals: carbonates of Ca, Mg, Fe and clay minerals. There are, how ever, few documentations of mineral trapping due to CO2 injection in aquifers. The project will conduct experimental studies of CO2 mineral trapping, to close present gaps in knowledge and understanding of the CO2 subsurfa ce sequestration process.
