Downhole ultrasonic imaging and measurement for well intervention

Tildelt: kr 3,0 mill.

In all kinds of well operations such as drilling and completion, maintenance and intervention and final abandonment, the nature of the work is such that it must be carried out blind. In many of these situations it would be very helpful to see the objects causing the difficulty. Cameras for downhole inspection has existed for a long time, their weakness being that they need to have optical free and reasonably clear view of the objects. As wells are often filled with non-transparent material and media like mud, oil and sand the limitations of a camera are significant. Thus they have limited application and a low success rate when used. A consequence of not being able to visualise the situation can be the application of wrong equipment and methods which res ults in more costly and time consuming operation in addition to extending non-productive time. This can ultimately result in total loss of well. As an alternative to optical visualisation, this project proposal aims to develop a method of visualisation b ased on ultrasonic imaging. Advantages of the proposed system include a forward looking imaging head, potential for 3D inaging and quantitative measurements.
