During the past twenty years, the field of popular music has seen a remarkable increase in groove oriented music. The interplay of new music technology and African-American musical traditions seem to have been particularly fertile in producing new styles and new sounds. This project is aimed at exploring changes in rhythm and sound in groove oriented music of the 1990s, with a special focus on micro-rhythmic relationships and new technological means. A main question is to what extent and in what ways chan ges in rhythm and sound in computer based, groove oriented music may be related to developments in digital music technology. The planned research activities include analyses and interpretation of music by contemporary artists within this field, among them D'Angelo, Beyonce and Missy Elliot. The use of digital music technology in contemporary groove oriented music is an almost unexplored field of research. Also comprehensive studies on rhythm and groove in popular music are lacking in music research, despi te these musical aspects' constitutive character for the development of popular music after World War two. The present project will meet this need for researching rhythm and sound in contemporary popular music styles, and is especially aimed at providing new insight into the relation between contemporary popular music and new technology. The project will build on the applicant's former work on played groove oriented music, which is soon to be internationally published. Through the present project, one wi shes to contribute to the development of a Norwegian milieu for research on rhythmic characteristics in groove oriented music at a high international level. An important task in this process is to establish an international network for research on rhythm and sound in popular music. This will be a unique opportunity to consolidate the research resources and competence within this field, which are today dispersed across institutions and disciplines.
