Computing the mechanics of the heart

Tildelt: kr 7,0 mill.

The goal for the project is to perform computer simulations of the mechanical behavior of the heart. This goal represents a number of challenges, ranging from matematical modelling of biophysical processes to implementation of complex computer algorithms. The movement of the heart muscle is a result of the active contraction of the muscle cells and the passive elastic properties of the muscle. The active contraction is in turn caused by an electrical activation of the cells. To simulate the complete proce ss we need to couple mathematical models for the electrical activation with models for active and passive mechanical properties of the muscle. For realstic simulations one must also include models for blood flow in the heart cavities. The computer simul ations have a large number of possible applications. Although the physiology of the heart is very well studied, many important mechanisms and processes are not fully understood. Mathematical modeling and computer simulations may improve our understanding of these processes, and provide new knowledge of the function of the heart.
