Virtual Outcrop Geology

Tildelt: kr 6,5 mill.

Data collected from outcrops have long been central to our understanding of the shape and form of both sedimentary and structural reservoir heterogeneites. Recent advances in subsurface reservoir technology has allowed the representation of these entities in 3D within computer systems, which in turn allows their numerical interrogation. The limited data availability for subsurface systems has resulted in significant uncertainty being an integral part of such models. Most recently the direct modeling of ou tcrop data has started to fill the gaps in our understanding. However the collection of sufficient quantities of data, with suitable accuracy to build models routinely remains a major challenge. The aim of this project is to develop and adapt existing met hods for the collection of such data and link this to the modeling of the systems. Once 3D representations of the data are produced, they have utility for both applied studies (subsurface reservoir geometries and architectures) and also have significant i mplications for our understanding of geological processes. The key challenge to the accurate building of such models is the collection of sufficiently accurate data. Recent developments in LIDAR and photogrammetry now provide a methodology for data colle ction that has yet to be applied to computer model building, especially in structural geology studies. Ground Penetrating Radar is a well established technique for imagining the shallow subsurface (typically to c.10m) which has been tentatively applied to model building but has yet to be integrated with other data sources or routinely applied. The techniques will be developed and applied to two case studies, one dealing with sedimentological data and the other with structural geology. Both of these cases studies have been designed to address major scientific issues, the evolution of shoreface systems and fault plane geometry, and also to test the application of the new techniques.
