Storage of CO2 in reservoirs is today one of the most promising approaches for safe long terms storage of CO2 as a means of reducing the emissions to the atmosphere. Relevant storage reservoirs may have regions of conditions where CO2 hydrate is in the st ability region. In this project we propose to model the heterogeneous hydrate formation from free CO2 and aqueous phase, as well as dissociation of hydrate towards a water phase containing little or no CO2. We propose the use of phase field theory to map the kinetics as function of temperature, pressure and compositions. The results will be fitted into simplified mathematical functions that are more feasible for implementation in reservoir simulators. Available experimental data from the open literature w ill be used for verification of the predicted kinetic rates under the controlled conditions of well defined interfaces. The project involves collaboration with two US universities. Professor Michael Celia at Princeton University will be involved in the re servoir modelling part of the project. The group of Professor Stephen Masutani at University of Hawaii will conduct experiments of CO2 injection in porous media at hydrate forming conditions. These experiments will be specially designed and conducted at n o cost for Norway as part of this collaboration project between USA and Norway. Experimental results from this experimental equipment will be used in an iterative process where the kinetic model is adjusted to take into account the special features of hyd rate formation in porous media. An important issue of the project is to establish a scientific platform of collaboration between USA and Norway that can be used to develop new common projects with multinational funding. Fundamental understanding of hydrat e formation kinetics is also of critical importance to the oil and gas industry and the potential of new international research projects based on the collective expertise developed through this project is realistic.
