Continuous updating of reservoir simulation models and improved reservoir management

To fully exploit the increased use of permanent sensors for monitoring pressure, temperature and flow rates it is natural to consider methods for continuous updating of the reservoir simulation models from this information. The main task of this project i s to make the ensemble Kalman filter techniques for continuous updating of reservoir simulation models useable and robust for a broad range of oil and gas fields. In addition the possiblity of using the updated reservoir models to improve the reservoir ma nagement will be addressed. Tasks: - Identifying the impact of the geological structure of the reservoir, and finding the best way of exploiting the geological prior information will be investigated. A challenges that has not been addressed is applying the technique to reservoir models built from facies models. The necessary modifications of the methodology to handle these cases must be developed. - The properties that need to be tuned will depend on the reservoir and the available knowledge about it. To tune several reservoir properties at once will require appropriate regularization, probably by specifying correlations between the parameters. This will be investigated. - The amount of data needed for successful use of the methodology must be identif ied. This applies to the frequency and amount of production data used (pressure and rate measurements). In addition it should be investigated if 4D seismic data can be incorporated in this setting, and the required frequency of the repeated seismic. - Th e continuous updated reservoir simulation models will be particularly suitable for reservoir management based on optimal control theory, but also other techniques for optimizing future production may be considered. The necessary methodology for a closed l oop solution where the reservoir is controlled based on continuously updated reservoir simulation models will be addressed.
