MIOR (microbial improved oil recovery): predictive model of stimulated production and improved reservoir management by microorganisms

Tildelt: kr 6,0 mill.

Microbial oil stimulation processes can be low-cost technologies with great potential for increased oil production if proven to be effective and manageable. There are several reports of MIOR field applications in the literature, and many more undocumented trials, but there is a striking lack of systematic, controlled experimental evidence and structured analysis of mechanisms that might explain incremental recovery by stimulation of microorganisms. Metabolic activity and diversity and phylogenetic diversi ty of representative reservoir samples are examined. Metabolic characteristics will be targeted at termophilic aerobic, fermentative and anaerobic processes, including both sulphate-, sulphur- and iron-reducing microorganisms and methanogens. Microbial pr operties and mechanisms of selected reservoir microorganisms will be examined quantitatively in coreflood and qualitatively in pore micro-model studies. Coreflood and micro-model studies will also be run in combination. Data generated through the microbia l studies will be implemented in a pore-network simulator for MIOR. The simulator will take into account simultaneous transport of the two phases (aqueous, oleic), transport of suspended microorganisms, biofilm formation and interactions of bacteria with oil. The simulator will be used to calculate residual oil saturation as a function of the main system parameters. The data will further be used to develop and validate a microbial reservoir simulator. Successful completion of the project will result in im proved description of populations of target petroleum reservoirs, understanding of and relationships between microbial mechanisms, understanding of microbial reservoir processes under specific conditions, and development of strategies and external control for managing the growth processes to stimulate oil production. In addition novel biologically and physically well-funded modeling and simulation tools for microbial processes in the reservoir will be presented.
