Design and Development of Robust Nanostructured Polymer and Nanocomposite Membranes for Selective Acid-Gas Separation

Tildelt: kr 4,5 mill.

This endeavor is an extensive collaboration between SINTEF, NTNU, North Carolina State University to develop novel membranes to separate CO2 gas from gas mixture. The membranes are synthesized from so-called block copolymers, which are advanced plastic ma terials where at least two types of monomers are incorporated into the same molecule. In the membrane identical monomers of adjacent molecules may form domains. If chosen properly, the domains may have an affinity towards acid-gases like CO2. In order to further enhance the acid-gas selectivity, functionalized endgroups are bounded to both block copolymer molecules and to nanoparticle surfaces. One will further try to create membranes with different shape that can be used in gas separation devices (i.e. hollow fibers, envelopes). Mathematical modeling of the molecular diffusion through the membranes will be used in order to understand the transport mechanism for gas molecules better and to develop a better understanding of what parameters are important in order to design and const ruct new acid-gas membranes. Important applications of such membranes include separation of CO2 from hydrogen-rich gas streams in connections with fuel cells. Another application is to remove CO2 from respiratory air in closed environment like in space and in fighter cockpits.
