ZeroGen - Technologies for Zero Emission Power Plants

Hydrogen production and advanced hybrid systems integrating fuel cells with other systems are among the internationally prioritized R&D areas. The present ZeroGen program deals with new technologies for hydrogen production from natural gas with integrat ed CO2-capture. The process is based on sorption enhanced reactions where reaction of methane with steam is carried out in the presence of a mixture of a reforming catalyst and a selective absorbent for CO2. New cost effective absorbents as well as reacto r technology for sorption enhanced hydrogen production will be addressed. In addition the present ZeroGen program includes system design and modelling, fuel cell technology and high temperature heat exchange for novel hybrid systems. One of the main chal lenges is to establish system models, which can be used for scaling up processes from small scale to industrial scale without introducing too high uncertainties in the performance estimates. In order to develop such hybrid systems the ZeroGen program also includes important issues of sensor technology and monitoring of integrated systems for optimization. Possible application of obtained results is suggestion of novel hybrid processes for simultaneous production of electricity and hydrogen from natural gas with integrated CO2-capture. Total efficiencies in the range of 80-90% are possible. In addition information on possible hybrid processes combining biomass or coal gasification reactors and solid oxide fuel cells with high electrical efficiencies (50 – 60%) will be obtained. Hydrogen production from natural gas by sorption enhanced reactions are applicable for distributed and/or large scale productions of hydrogen for industrial use, for use in the transport market, electricity or heat production. In addition valuable information about possible hydrogen production from biomass or coal gasification will be obtained.
