CLEAN ENERGY BY USING HIGH PERFORMANCE MEMBRANES

A FSC-membrane for selective CO2 removal is currently under development in the research group of the applicant; very promising results have been documented. Selectivities for CO2/CH4 > 1000 have been achieved, while the CO2-flux is currently measured at a pp. 0.014 m3(STP)/m2.bar.h. By succesful reduction of the selective layer down to 2 micrometers (from today's 20 micrometer), the goal for the flux will be achieved. So far only the gas mixture CO2-CH4-H2O has been measured. Gas mixtures from which CO2 ca n be removed are: flue gas, natural gas, syngas or H2 mixtures. This means that CO2 gas mixtures containing components like N2, O2, H2 in addition to CH4 also will be adressed in the project. Development of the current FSC-membrane has been ongoing for a lmost 3 years, but progress has been slow due to financial reasons. The results obtained have however attracted international interest, and a patent is being filed for while waiting funding. In order to speed up the development and reach the defined goals , the current application is documenting need for one PhD-student (3 years), one post doc (2 years), one senior researcher (2 1/2 years) in addition to the academic personell and international partners who are already in place. Focus for the research will be: -to optimise flux and selectivity by controlling identified parameters in membrane synthesising (molecular weight of the polymeric carrier (PVAm), crosslinking mechanisms, as well as to keep the membrane swollen) -to characterise material properties by FT_IR, SEM, DSC and other techniques -to develop a stable commercial membrane for use as hollow fibres or flat-sheet module -to document the membrane separation process by using in-house programs -towards the end of the project an integrated membrane s eparation process will be designe
