Scenario-based Approach to Risk Analysis of Ship Collision and Grounding

Tildelt: kr 11,3 mill.

The following specific Project Tasks are performed: • Probability of incident: For given characteristics (e.g. ship type, route, and cargo) the following is addressed: (i) Description of critical initiating events (ii) Probability of resulting ship path (iii)Resulting accidental events. • Structural damage: The following analyses are performed: (i)Resulting structural damage is analysed (ii)Extrapolation/interpolation of damage characteristics by simpler structural models. • Initial cargo loss: For g iven damage conditions, consequences in terms of release to the environment or sinking of the ship is analysed. Cargo loss and spreading to the environment is assessed. Extrapolation and interpolation to other damage conditions is made. • Reserve strengt h and further cargo loss : For given damage conditions, further deterioration is evaluated as a function of environmental condition (current, wave, wind) and grounding/collision characteristics. Resulting probability distribution of final structural damag e and cargo loss is identified. • Case studies: A number of scenarios are analysed. These cover a certain range of e.g. the following characteristics: Sailing route (open sea, channel, coastal region), ship category, cargo type and environmental conditio ns. • Each of the Dr.Ing. students in the project will address specific research topics in this list. Further details are found in the ANNEX The project will be fully coordinated and provide very important information to the international project finance d under EC Framework Programme 6 (Sustainable Surface Transport)): Decision Support System for Ships in Degraded Condition..
