Electronic Processes for breakdown and ageing in high voltage electric insulating liquids above and below freezing point

New materials and improvement of old materials for high voltage insulation are requested to increase operational stresses, improve compatibility and cope with demands due to environmental aspects (e.g. removing polyaromates, biodegradability), high tempe rature applications and resistance to fire. Molecular and electronic processes taking place under high electric field stress are important both for ageing and breakdown of dielectric materials. Knowledge and understanding of these processes will help impr oving materials and designs of high voltage equipment. Qualitatively it is well known that e.g. additives with a low ionization coefficient will result in an increased speed of breakdown channels in liquids. Likewise a high electron affinity will speed up pre-breakdown channels for negative polarity. Combinations of optical (light emission, spectroscopy and imaging) and electrical (charge and current measurement) techniques offer possibilities for characterization of processes resulting from e.g. impulse stresses.The idea is to bring in modeling experience from the physical chemistry on quantum chemistry and chemometrics along with the experiments: both for experimental design and analysis of results. In this way a deeper insight is gained.One interesting application is also methods for testing solid insulating materials and the impact additives have on them.
