VANN: Genetic engineering in aquaculture: Sustainability from an ethical, ecological and economic perspective

The most prominent challenge to GE in a sustainable context is how to ensure environmental protection and at the same time achieve economic benefits. Only through integration of different scientific disciplines can this challenge be adequately understood and managed. We intend to combine experimental approaches with knowledge derived from theoretical and applied studies as well as ethical examinations brought forward by the approach taken in this study. The biological and ecological results gained from th e experimental studies would be of importance also for regulatory risk assessment. The replacement of traditional fish feed with GE feed and the development of new generation DNA vaccines may fundamentally alter the present production systems of fish feed (especially relevant for feed production in the third world), wild fisheries and finally the market. The biological analysis will be accompanied with examination of the role of science to improve the present framework for governance of risk of GE in aqua culture. This project extends and broadens the scope and content of the recently granted FUGE project 157157/150.
