Our knowledge about Norwegian commercial interests in colonial Africa and Oceania in the period ca. 1880-1950, has many lacunas. Very little is known about the extent of Norwegian trade, investments and activities in these regions, and the result has been a distorted perception of the Norwegian contribution to the building of colonial empires. This is true both in terms of academic knowledge and in terms of public awareness. "In the wake of Colonialism" will bring about new knowledge and provide a new bas is for comparative studies of longer-term economic development. This knowledge will question the accepted dictum whereby the Norwegian development era has been perceived as distinctly different from the colonial period, and furthermore challenge the view that Norway had few or no colonial links. In order to provide the widest possible range of Norwegian entrepeneurship in the period, a number of different enterprises dealing in different goods and investing in different businesses have been selected as s ubjects for detailed analysis. The project is scheduled to run over 3 years. Fifteen scholars will be active at various stages; historians, anthropologists and economists: Ten Norwegians, three Danes, one Fin and one South African. Some of the partners ha ve backgrounds from non-European studies, others from economic history. The initial result will be a series of research monographs. Due to the lack of knowledge about the topic, and its potential for public interest, the project will also emphasize gener al educational efforts. Thus, the project will draw on the institutional background of its participants (3 partners based in museums) to create 3 exhibitions presenting the material objects deriving from overseas cultural and commercial contact. One film is also scheduled, with one further to be planned. Finally, the books resulting from the project are planned as basis for new masters programs at Høyskolen i Agder and the University of Oslo.
