The project investigates the legal implications of biometric identification/authentication schemes in terms of the effect of such schemes (and attendant regulation) on personal identity, autonomy, privacy and integrity. It investigates these issues by exa mining regulatory instruments, both at national and international levels, particularly those dealing specifically with biometrics, data privacy, biotechnology, biobanks and criminal procedure. The investigation is cross-jurisdictional, with particular foc us on relevant initiatives in Norway, United Kingdom, Australia and USA. The principal objective of the project is to lay a solid platform for resolving the issue of how biometric identification and authentication schemes -- including the information gene rated by them -- ought to be legally regulated.
