Welfare States and Social Inequality

Tildelt: kr 0,14 mill.

As a member of the board of RC28, and together with Department of Sociology and Human Geography, UiO, Birkelund is responsible for organising the Spring Meeting of the RC28 next May. RC28 comprises some of the world's most distinguised sociologists, such as professor John H. Goldthorpe, Nuffield College, Oxford; professor Donald Treiman, University of California at Los Angeles; professor Haya Stier, Tel Aviv University; professor Hiroshi Ishida, Tokyo University, to mention a few. RC28 was founded about 50 years ago. The success of RC28 is related to its ability to incorporate new approaches to the study of social inequality, related to not only social class, but also gender, ethnicity, as well as other economic, political and cultural differences. Thus, RC28 covers a wide range of social science research, with an emphasis on quantitative empirical analyses, and sophisticated methodology. Scandinavia has hosted RC28 meetings before; in 1993 there was a RC28 meeting in Trondheim, organised by Kristen Ring dal and Tore Lindbekk. In 1996 the Spring meeting was in Stockholm. Due to our geo-political location, we have decided to title our meeting Welfare States and Social Inequality. This topic will be addressed in the plenary session on the first day of the m eeting, featuring AnneMette Sørensen, Harvard and Wout Ultee, Nijmegen. The rest of the 3 day meeting consists of parallell paper-sessions. Each paper is given a discussent in addition to being presented by it's author(s). We expect 80-100 paper presentat ions. We will also organise a poster-session for the best of those papers that, due to limitations, are not accepted for presentation. Topics for the paper sessions include: Educational and labour market inequalities, related to gender, social class and ethnicity. Family formation. Income studies. Culture. Comparative studies. The homepage of RC28 will give information: http://www.soc.duke.edu/~rc28/
