The main goal for this projects is to analyze the assumed peace tradition, whether such a tradition actually exists in any meaningful way, and if so how far back in time it extends. The goal will be pursued by means of eleven separate sub projects. Nine o f them are basically historical in their approach, two are in the tradition of normative political theory. We believe that an interdisciplinary approach is vital both for a theoretical and historical understanding of the issues involved. We wish better to understand the ideas that the assumed tradition consists of, especially with respect to Norwegian concepts of causes of war and conditions for peace. We also want to invetstigate Norwegian perceptions of the role of small states in the international syst em and how these ideas have been influenced by major events in world politics. But we are not only interested in ideas. It is equally important to get a clearer sense of what Norwegians have actually done to make the world more peaceful. Thus we will stud y how Norwegians, that is, statesmen, politicians, elites, opinion makers, and grass root organizations, have tried to promote change in the international system, to ameliorate the consequences of international and civil conflict, and to engage in peace k eeping and peace building. By making both ideas and actions, and how they mutually impact each other, the focus of this study, we can achieve a more nuanced and well-informed picture of the Norwegian peace tradition. This research proposal takes as its po int of departure not just the importance and topicality of the subject, but also seeks to broaden the scope of research within the historiography of Norwegian foreign relations.
