Improved macroscopic sweep efficiency in CO2-flooding of North Sea reservoirs

Tildelt: kr 8,4 mill.

The present research project is divided into four main activities: •Qualification of chemicals systems (foam or polymer) for sweep improving methods, including determination of system properties, interaction between chemical system and reservoir fluids, injectivity, retention of chemicals and chemical stability. •The potential for improving sweep efficiency in fractured carbonate reservoirs by using foam, polymers and WAG (reference) technology is determined. The PhD-student will work in this area. •The potential for improving sweep efficiency in heterogeneous sandstone reservoirs by using foam, polymers and WAG (reference) technology is determined. •Simulations of sweep improving methods in fractured carbonate reservoirs and heterogeneous sandstone re servoirs will be carried out. This includes work on design of fluid systems and experimental set-up, necessary improvement of computer models, and determination of potentials in field scale. New competence will be gained on use of sweep improving methods in fractured carbonate reservoirs and heterogeneous sandstone reservoirs. Better description of sweep improving methods in computer models will give an improved tool for estimation of the potentials for these methods. The project will also establish knowl edge on how to improve the CO2 storage potential for oil reservoirs and thereby decrease the CO2 emission to air. The type of rock material, oil, experimental conditions and reservoir modelling tool to be used will be determined in co-operation with the i ndustrial sponsors.
