Canada - Investigating long-range transport of contaminants to the Arctic using snow and ice

Tildelt: kr 0,10 mill.

The plan for this proposal can be divided up into two parts (1) analyze some recent snow samples already on hand or to be collected in the spring of 2005 from Arctic Canada and Svalbard in order to get a better sense of the present baseline concentrations for a variety of contaminants of interest, and (2) gather a workshop to bring together potential participants for the future IPY project. The samples to be analyzed for temporal variability will come from already existing ice cores from Lomonosovfonna, Austfonna and Holtedahlfonna on Svalbard. There are also existing snow samples and shallow firn cores from both Svalbard and Canadian Arctic that will be used in addition to some new samples that will be collected in connection with already planned field working during the spring of 2005. Thus, the field collection of the samples will entail no major logistical expenditures because it will take place as part of already-planned and funded field activities. We will identify the historic input trends of OC c ompounds listed by the Stockholm Convention in the existing ice cores from Svalbard. These results will show how well bans and restrictions on uses of these compounds in many parts of the world have affected their distributions to the north polar region. We propose to analyze snow samples from the Canadian Arctic and Svalbard for the same suite of OC contaminants PCBs, DDT group, hexachlorocyclohexanes, endosulfans, dieldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endrin-aldehyde and trace metals Pb, Cd, Sb and Hg. In order to plan and coordinate the proposed activities we propose to organize a workshop in Tromsø during the winter of 2005/06 with the aim to develop the plan in the IPY pre-proposal. Much of the proposed activities involve field work to remote pl aces which would benefit from being coordinated well ahead of time. In addition a list of prioritized contaminants to sample and both sampling and analytical techniques have to be determined.
