New Subsea and Downhole Instrumentation. Novel measurement methods for real-time reservoir control, e-field operation and subsea processing.

Tildelt: kr 17,6 mill.

Recent advances in measurement science are attributed to aspects such as novel sensor technology, signal processing methods and finally multiple modality systems. The focus in this project will be to extract more information firstly from each measurement, and secondly from the combination of several independent measurement principles. The main sensing principles applied under this project (all tasks) are: ultrasonic, dual modality (DMD) gamma-ray and electromagnetic. The proposed research has a two-fold approach: firstly, in-depth physics research on the sensor technologies outlined below, and secondly the application of each of these technologies to several subsea and downhole applications. The research tasks address the applications, but are strongly i nterconnected regarding measurement technologies. The focal points of the four research tasks cover applications ranging from: - downhole multiphase measurements (task 1). - multiphase fluid sampling, fluid characterisation and flow measurement on the multiphase flow upstream of the subsea separator (task 2), and - monitoring of levels and sand build-up in subsea separators and measurement of water phase quality at the water outlet (task 3), and - allocation and fiscal metering downstream the subsea se parator (task 4). Each of the research tasks will focus different aspects and parts of the sensor technologies and measurement principles, and together this will build a strong and generic competence and technology platform at CMR and UoB. This generic c ompetence and technology platform will be strongly linked to the applications defined under the research tasks, and the second part of the strategy is to adopt and apply these results to develop new prototype technologies, solutions and concepts for the v arious applications defined under the four research tasks.
