NANOMAT-Nanoteknologi og nye materialer

Development of customized barrier packaging by novel nanoparticle technology

Tildelt: kr 1,6 mill.

By using novel nanoparticle technology one aim in this project to develop nanoparticle-based packaging materials with customized barrier incoporated at nanolevel in a sustainable way. Major actors in the Norwegian Institute sector, SINTEF, PFI and Matfo rsk are joining forces in order to achieve the ambitious goal in this project and will also collaborate with NTNU and UIO. The project is organized in two phases; In phase I of the project, defined as a KMB project, four different advanced functionalise d nanoparticle consepts will be developed and investigated together with several industrial partners; Iorganic/organic hybrid polymers, cellulose nanoparticles, synthetic- and natural clay particles and hydrophobic iron compounds. Polyolefings will be use d as the matrix material. The feasability of these concepts will be establieshed through pilot application runs. Phase II of the project will, in addition to the industrial partners in Phase I), also involve end users, so at this stage, the hole value chain is represented. The generic competence built in Phase I will therefore be beneficial for the whole Norwegian packaging industry and contribute to the transition of this industry as a whole towards a knowledge-based value added oriented business. The content of this phase will be dependent of the findings in phase I, and will be oriented towards targeting and development of industrial packaging manufacturing processes for customized barrier packaging prototypes suitable for foods.
