ROMFORSK-Program for romforskning

Norwegian Participation in the Solar B satellilte

Tildelt: kr 2,6 mill.

The Japanese Solar-B mission is the next major space research project in solar physics. Its purpose is to study the coupling between the fine magnetic structure in the photosphere and the dynamic processes occurring in the corona. During the last years No rway, via the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, has participated in this project through funding supplied by the Norwegian research council. The Norwegian role in the project is to write the ?Quick Look? and other software designed for instrument test ing and calibration, for scientific analysis and for data archiving for the EIS instrument aboard Solar-B. This in collaboration with Mullard Space Science Laboratory (UK) that is the principal investigatior for the EIS instrument. The project applied fo r here represents a continuation of the ongoing research council project. Participation of ITA in Solar-B will contribute to maintain and further develop its skills as one of the leading institutions within international solar physics, with the beneficial effects this implies for Norwegian science education and research in general.
