Conversion of natural gas to hydrocarbons over acidic zeolite type catalysts.

Tildelt: kr 2,6 mill.

The high oil price and concern for CO2 emission make processes for conversion of natural gas to fuel and chemicals highly desirable. First generation catalysts and processes exists, UOP/Hydros MTO, Exxon/Mobile?s MTG, Haldor Topsøes TIGAS. All processes h ave a large potential for improvement, particularly regarding selectivity and deactivation. The Catalysis groups at the University of Oslo and SINTEF in Oslo have 15 years of experience and leading knowledge in the MTO - process, including synthesis and characterisation of the related catalytic materials. A recent major breakthrough in the fundamental understanding of acid catalysed reactions in zeolites has been achieved particularly as a result of the combination of computational and experimental studies. We therefore now understand the mechanism of MTH reactions in zeotype materials to such a detail that we can modify, and hence improve, the materials in a planned, systematic way. This application is for founding one PhD student, and expenses for the support from the SINTEF group. Main activities will include: * Synthesis of modified CHA-type materials. * Synthesis of new zeotype materials. * Catalytic studies of methanol and methyl halide conversion over CHA- type materials. * Investigations of deactivation processes. * Advanced characterization of acidity, (Turin, Italy) *
